After attempting halo five on heroic to challenge myself I found that most of the time my deaths occurred due to blue team or Osiris just standing around, not shooting, not taking cover just dying and not reviving me. I know I can do it because I have played all of the other Halos on heroic to some extent but have only completed one halo five level on legendary and not anything else higher than heroic.
Because of the issue, I decided to return to some of my FPS roots: Star wars Republic Commando! I went in with the intention of playing on hard, then realised I hadn’t played the game for a year and played on medium. (I am going to replay it on hard after). During the assault ship (acclamator) level I realized how appalling blue team and Osiris’ AI actually are. To think a 2005 video game has better AI, a better story and better armour customisation than a 2015 game which has had four years of updates is horrifying. In H5 I cannot rely on BT or I at all but in RC I have grow so comfortable with the squad in a matter of days that I find myself letting them cover me because I can trust them to be equall to me in skill in boots on the ground combat. In H5 I was so frustrated at vale that I killed her and wasted my ammo killing the other two (they butchered buck, one of my favourite characters from ODST) then left to play RC.
343i have redeemed themselves from this by MCC on pc and reach on MCC halo five needs an AI update or I’m just gonna play MCC and RC for the rest of my life. Is anyone else encountering the issue or am I worse than I think, let me know.
P.s : I don’t mean to be harsh and rude but I am just deppresed that a dead 2005 game that had even worse development than halo 2 is winning my attention from a “live service” 2015 game.
I was able to beat it on legendary with the AI to get the lone wolf achievement. If you play more like the original Halos before you had AI backup then you will be fine. If they pick you consider it a get out of jail free card and don’t get used to relying on it. By the end I was more familiar with what the AI was capable of. I noticed when I put my self in harder to reach places they struggled to get to me for the revive. Honestly though I feel like the AI is there as a backup to playing 4 player coop campaign which is awesome.

“This is humanity’s best?” -Promethean Soldier, upon witnessing Locke murder Vale because he got mad that she couldn’t figure out how to charge her plasma pistol
CE’s allies have better AI than H5’s haha. They’re truly awful in H5. But, as has been said above, play the campaign like they’re not there and it should help for both offensive and defensive strategies.
Halo’s ally AI has always been so dumb it makes bricks look like Harvard alumni. At the very least in my case Blue Team/Fireteam Osiris were actually pretty consistent in reviving me. Just give them some spare power weapons and be thankful they at least soak up some damage for you (here’s looking at you Resistance 2 shudders).

Having just started playing the game on Normal, this is… unfortunately true. The red-shirt Marines in CE were better at taking down enemies than most of Halo 5’s squad AI. In fact, I got so frustrated with Fireteam Osiris on Unconfirmed that I just grabbed a rocket launcher and blasted them when they were bunched together, and when other friendly AI saw this, they just made comments and did nothing about it. At least in CE, if you deliberately killed a couple of Marines in front of several others, they would turn on you for your treachery. If there is one thing that Fire Team Osiris and Blue Team are good for, however, it’s drawing enemy fire away from the player temporarily.

Hold on… you can swap weapons with the fire teams? Every time I try, I can never get the “Swap for ally’s [insert weapon here]” message.
As much as the AI can be annoying to deal with, I don’t think 343 will update the AI. I find Halo 5’s campaign on Legendary to be just as difficult, if not more difficult than Halo 2 on Legendary difficulty. A lot of practice is needed to complete the harder difficulty. Side note: If I remember correctly, the person who programed the spartan AI in Halo 5, programed the clone AI in Republic Commando.

For me Halo 5 was the first campaign I did and found it much easier than Halo 2 on legendary. I was able to get the lone wolf achievement without looking for guides. If it was not for Halo Completionist guides on YouTube, I am not sure I would have been able to beat Halo 2 on legendary. Even with the guides I had a buddy help with beating the prophet on the regret mission.

Well that’s good. Great job for you man. I mean, I didn’t say this and I probably should have in the post I made, but I haven’t completed Halo 5 on Legendary yet, and I do solo. I know I completed the first couple missions, but so far I have not done the whole thing. I’m going to need to complete the campaign on legendary in order to know for sure if it is more difficult than Halo 2. After all, I can’t forget about those darn sniper jackals.

Good luck man. I will say there is a jump you can do to skip the part where you have to fight 3 wardens at the same time. If you have not gotten there yet you will know when you do. Its an insane level and I def skipped that fight.

Oh I have completed that part, as I have completed the campaign on Normal difficulty. I can’t imagine how difficult that’s gonna be, but now that you mention a skip, I will try to find it when I play it. Thanks.

If my memory serves me correctly (haven’t played H5’s campaign since 2017), you can swap weapons if they are their regular guns, but can’t get your squad mates’ signature weapon. So if Linda was holding on to that sweet Nornfang you can’t just swap it for your dinky magnum start blowing alien heads clean off. But I do distinctly remember giving Fred, Linda, and Kelly each a Incineration Cannon before the final fight with the Warden on Legendary. Made things way easier that way.

I do not remember switching weapons with your AI teammates but you can def point to/highlight a weapon and they will go get it.

The A.I. are completely useless. Beating Legendary was a challenge in its own way from the frustrations. There is no need for characters to follow, if they are useless. I hope they are removed in Halo Infinite.

Basically this ^.
Just play it slowly and strategize like you would in all the other Halo games on Legendary. If the AI-Squad actually helps you, that’s nice, but don’t count on it.
P.S. Am I the only one who would have liked the option to just turn off their “help”? Dying on legendary is anoying enough without having to wait the extra time for the AI-Squad to -Yoink- up and die already so I can restart…
Now that I think about it… having the ability to use this squad mechanic would have been nice in Halo 2. Just imagine sending Fire Team Osiris into an open space ahead of you so that you can see if there are Jackal Snipers and where they’re shooting from. That would have been nice. Would have saved me from a LOT of headaches when playing on Legendary.

You press up on the d pad
I gave all of them fuel rod cannons once, they only used their loadout weapons.
If you give your squad a lot of commands (keep telling them exactly who to attack or where to be) and give them weapons they can actually be useful. Found that out trying to beat the Breaking on Legendary without dying.

Wait, I thought pressing up on the D-Pad did that weird pinging noise thing for finding hidden items and stuff. It can swap weapons too?
