For everyone: the fans and the mods and the curators:

Its been some time since I’ve paraded these forums. I think it was bungie.net when I was last on a halo board. 343 has done admirably with the IP and I’m sure its been rough but it’ll be fine if not more than fine. You’ve lost story guys and multiplayer guys and now have one of the most enduring g halo titles under your belt- halo 5. Bravo.

But I’m a fan of the series. And I want the IP to continue to do well. The biblical symbolism and space opera stuff is great. And I’ve always been the man behind the visor. A lot of the ideas that were discussed on halo boards ended up in reach and were received well enough. I guess armor abilities were somewhat sour in reach and 4, but quite amazing g in 5. Truly, 343 handles the gameplay revolution within a revolutionary shooter as no company could. Look how bad Disney is killing the star wars saga, and you’ll be amiss as to how quickly a valiant ship can sink.

The pro pipe in reach was my baby. It was essentially taken from oni. But via a backdoor route of smashing ideas. Its still a fabled weapon unto the halo community. So, I will be outlining weapons. I’ll also be addressing plot after the reclaimer saga. Since its conclusion seems somewhat obvious.

The plasma wrench TM

What it is: This is my newbaby. It only got a name a week ago. But its been a working concept for a few months and is a sort of evolution of a generic plasma gun idea. Basically, its the offspring of the plasma pistol and a shotgun. The name wrench is a throwback to the gravity wrench from alpha halo. So the name has a certain visual connotation, a heavy two-pronged gun that delivers massive plasma output.

How it works: You charge it like a plasma pistol, and it glows blue/purple (ideally not the same color as the plasma pistol) and when you release the trigger a large cloud of plasma flies forward before dissipating after 10-15 feet. So, yes, its a blue flamethrower. A single shot flamethrower. And all it does is kill shields. Its the quintessential protoss weapon, emphasizing the short range combat and shield destroying abilities. Its likely great fun against warthogs but is probably rather ineffective because of the relatively short range. Oh, the projectile is piercing. Meaning, if 3 guys are lines up, the plasma wrench projectile will hit the first and continue to pass through to the second and third enemies.

Why it matters: I like breakout. Its a strange thing, though. Passed from 343 to the community and filing a niche role. But breakout is pretty much all snipers and shotguns. Its super tactical and doesn’t make room for swords and plasma rifles. I think back to halo2 and on a map like collossss, plasma pistols and rifles were used to push with guerilla tactics. And so, the plasma wrench is that role but to 11. On a game type like breakout, a super plasma flamethrower thing is ably suited for tight corners and narrow halls. Whether 3 shots will kill someone like the haloCE plasma pistol is somewhat irrelevant. Whether a temporary blind mechanic can be added to shield zaps is also irrelevant.

The shock grenade

What it is: emp, chaff, shock, whatever. Its a human grenade that can’t kill a person but has a similar damage output and puts vehicles on ice. I’m sure the symbol of a lightning bolt seems evocative of a shock grenade, but I’m of the opinion that a magnet might be cooler. It does stick to surfaces.

How it works: take a frag grenade. Remove its ability to deal damage. Add the ability to zap shields and stall vehicles. Now make it stick to players and vehicles, but remain as bouncy as a frag grenade.

Why it matters: because breakout, of course. The thing is that breakout fundamentally changes the gameplay, yet weapons and stuff were not introduced with the gametype. If you look at gears of war, a very successful round based team shooter, you’ll notice that you begin the match with a grenade that cannot kill- the smoke grenade. It sucks to die to a grenade when you have one life. But if I am the last one from my team and hold up in a small room, the enemies won’t be able to spam grenades to finish me off- we have to fight. And that’s what makes halo compelling- the gunplay.

The blue screen of death

This is yet another idea to further breakout’s success. The blind mechanic. This could just be an option for multiplayer. Blinding players for 1-2 seconds with an overcharged plasma shot / emp type effect really deepens the sandbox for breakout and swat. I wouldn’t see casuals loving the idea too much but maybe MLG will make use of it.

The power up weapons

The sword should make you invisible and the hammer should give you overshields. Power up + melee weapon. Such a system would have no room for an invisible sniper hiding on a perch. The sword basically is the ninjanaught powerful. Its not a complicated idea, but paves the way for more fun.

Let’s talk plot.

Its called the reclaimer trilogy. I’m guessing by the end, cortana and cheif will be back together again. I don’t know what the state of the flood will be, but my guess is that halo wars content will not spill over into halo # games, even if the stories are concurrent. That’s a bingo!

So, then, halo 7? Of course I’m going to offer story for the seventh game. I’ve read the books and played them all and been with bungie since marathon 2. And I never had thoughts on halos story. Until now. Until game 7. Its so perfect, isn’t it?

First, let’s make it all consistent. The thing about video games is they do story visually. If you do 4 player coop, then make chief part of a team of 4 Spartans. But only have them controlled by players. Its an insult to have AI controlling a spartan. AI are not super soldiers. So if you are doing 2 player, player 1 is chief and player 2 is fred- or something like that. The other 2 Spartans are on the ship or at the base.

You still don’t get the picture, though, because now you think, well, why not have 8 or 12 Spartans to choose from? The issue is framing, and the issue is storytelling. Characters are not interchangable- lest they cease being characters. I hope the appeal of john 117 being the faceless voiceless protagonist has shown everyone that Spartans are not interchangeable. Clearly arbiter and Locke earned some backlash.

So you are the MC117 and you come over a hill and find a few temple or Promethean boss or whatever. One spartan, maybe chief, asks “what is that?” And cortana gives a precise answer. “It’s called the estuary of the skies”. Then Fred or Kelly mentions that it reminds them of something on Onyx. Lastly Linda will say with snark, " didn’t we blow that up?"

Basically, more dialogue than ever before. And this can be done with coop or not. Linda’s snark of “didn’t we blow that up?” Doesnt require her to be present with john117. This can be radio chatter. Or not. Either way it builds the archetypes. And the many voices besides cortana give a richer story.

Also, it is meaningful should a character die. Fred sacrificing himself at the end of the game would reiterate reach and fallofreach plot devices. And then Locke can be in halo 8 or maybe buck. Yeah, buck for comic relief- now that sarge is gone. Tragedy and comedy.

The next step is to make the universe mysterious again. The way to do that is cut all ties with the past. For whatever reason, cortana and blue team won’t be officially supported by the uesc or whatever. There won’t he backup. There won’t be treaties. Etc. There was a neat moment in halo5 that could have gone on forever- and that was blue team having a prototype secret starship with no commanding officer. It seemed so very metroid-esque.

And so that’s where we need to find our team- in command of 1 big ship with a skeleton crew. No pillar of autumn, no infinity starship. Just, like, a clone of inamberclad. 2 drop ships. A couple seargents. 20 grunts, a captain and some support staff.

Its not the immensity that is significant. Because putting a microscope on the small things makes them gigantic. Its not that there are hundreds of Spartans and teams of soldiers. Its the mortality of these invincible soldiers that don’t die.

This is all still about framing. Its about the devices of storytelling.

As per the story itself, I have a decent idea. If halo was starwars, I believe halo should become Indiana Jones.

Let’s see… So blue team goes to a shield world or whatever to recover some artifact or whatever. This enrages some elites who act as if you were about to open Pandoras box (hint: they don’t lie), and so elites board your ship and force it to crash. Now you are marooned, fighting covies and promethians. You go up a gravity lift to blow up a cruiser like CE. Irregular current 787 or whatever new forerunner AI shows up with a plan to ‘activate’ whatever forerunner technology- to escape or meet the forerunners or whatever. This is Pandoras box, though. If gravemind was grendel, and grendel had a mother, then master chief is about to meet the mother of grave mind.

Gravemother well call her. Anyhow, she comes through giant portal or teleportation thing. Her, and the flood of a thousand millennia. And not just at this shield world- at all the shield worlds. And herein lies the means to Fred’s sacrifice. That he bides the time of the flood as the others escape on a Promethean starship, and race to humanity to warn them of the hell unleashed.

777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777

One thing this does is allow a new archetype of flood to occur. Gravemother herself can be this giant space whale looking thing, something the size of a starship. The floods ability to use technology has been seriously underplayed and they have taken the form of mindless zombie. But this flood from ancient times, evolving with Promethean technology in some unknown fold of space, trapped for thousands of millennia, has crafted a techno-flood-heirarchy. What I mean is, this species would be the new alien slavers.

Before, flood infected humans and elites and grunts. But this flood from another dimension are infected forms of aliens unbeknownst to humanity. Bearing unknown technology. Just as the covenant were a mix of species, so can this new flood army be a mix of alien species. A human-esqu soldier, a dog-esque serpent, a four-armed proto-elite with 3 eyes, … You get the idea. Have an army of infected species all quite new to halo lore. You can have surprise bosses and introduce new kinds in latter sequels. Let them have speeders and mini-mechs. Let them be inspired by the brutes- with bladed weapons, spike projectiles, and a rugged and ferocious banal animality. A brutes ability to berserk should he extended to many of the new flood forms.

In halo CE, we got the flood halfway through the game. In halo 4, we get the promethians in the second level. In halo 7, the hyper-flood should be introduced in the second to last stage. Nothing like 12 surprises in a games finale.

Thanks for your time and god speed,

John 117

Where does this put halo 8?

In a great spot. Cortana is piloting a Promethean starship with 3/4 of blue team. Halo 8 would have a perfect precipice for horror with the return of Infamous Buck. Fred can return as a ghost or infected doppelganger- some marionette of gravemother. Irregular current 787 can be her personal claptrap. Telling her that 117 was personally responsible for firing the rings twice and killing gravemind. Hell hath no fury…

Maybe I’m not being clear enough- but horror and comedy go together so well. Claptrap explaining your exploits to grave mind before being smashed to bits would be dark and humorous. Visions of Fred in mourning followed by Buck giving a 1 liner about whatever can really breakj the tension. Again, dark and funny.

And if you don’t have 4 different races to accommodate in halo 8, you can just focus on bosses. Lots and lots of hyper-flood bosses. Mini bosses. Sub bosses. Final bosses.
