Seriously? This has been a bone of contention with me in the past, but it’s gotten so bad it’s rendered the game virtually unplayable when a match decends into the constant black screen. Especcially when I sit in black screen and hear my teammates comme over the mic with game relevant information, indicating that they are in fact, PLAYING THE -Yoinking!- GAME, while I sit helplessly in the roster void. And then to top it off, ore often than not I get kicked out of the game because of it.
Y’all need to un -Yoink- your servers or some -Yoink-, or find a better way to host change, cause this -Yoink- is just getting ridiculous.
Whoah, hey buddy. First of all, welcome to Waypoint. I can tell you’re new here and probably Halo in general. Why’s that, you ask? Halo has always been Peer 2 Peer connection. Their servers only take care of stat tracking, player information such as armor configuration, and playlist data. Not the host in game.
That said, the problem is other players in game, and you. If you get disconnected a lot MOST of the time it’s your Internet. Occasionally you may be thrown back into lobby when you’re pre match, that may not be your fault.
It’s mostly caused be connection inconsistencies in the host, making the game want to switch the host. Halo 3 was more lenient to inconsistencies than Reach, so yes Reach does have more black screen. Be glad the game thinks you deserve such a good connection.
At least when the black screens stop, you’ll have a good connection.
The biggest problem for me is how black screen resets killing sprees or how sometimes you lose recently acquired medals. For example, I got an overkill extermination which directly resulted in someone rage quitting. Because the game went to black screen, I lost all those medals! I guess he got the last laugh which is stupid.
I’ve also lost countless unfrigginbelievables to black screens.

New to halo? You must be joking…You are joking, right? I’ve been playing halo for a long while. Seasoned veteran
(new to wayoint forums yes. I’ve never bothered posting in here. Forums crawl with trolls)
I’m not overly concerned with it being a P2P connection other than the black screen -Yoink-. It’s -Yoink!- annoying, and completely inefficient in my opinion, because it keeps me from playing with some of my friends back home most of the time, and it slows matchmaking down quite a bit. I don’t get disconnected often, unless the game is continuing while I’m still stuck looking at the roster, but it’s still a bit frustrating when it does occur. Most of the time black screening doesn’t help the lag at all, or occasionally makes it worse
Don’t get me wrong, I love Halo, and I love 343. I just wish they’d address this in some way to reduce it or be rid of it completely.
Perhaps I need to be less enthusiastic in the future. I apollogize for my less than veteran actions, but sometimes I lose the battle with that little horned fellow on my shoulder. Seeking to rectify.
If you are sitting in black screen while others are playing, its your connection being bad.

This isn’t necessarily true.
The hosts service provider could be experiencing upstream issues to certain locations.
For example when a Japanese person gets host it lags badly for me because Japan’s peering links to Australia are congested and as most Japanese traffic is domestic Japanese peering providers are only slowly provisioning more bandwidth.
If you had an impossible 0ms, zero packet loss connection you would still experience lag in internationally hosted games and when playing on bad domestic hosts.
Hitscan and client authoritive solve nothing, they just make the game more random and inconsistent for everyone. They also enable cheating which is harder to detect than in a client and dedicated server system.
