After well over a year of playing Halo 5, I can confidently say that this game’s iteration of Big Team CTF is probably the worst in the series. Matches are consistently a struggle for both teams to get anywhere, which also leads to a lot of games dragging out until the timer expires. This makes for a pretty bad experience, in my opinion.
I believe that these problems are caused by the fact that Big Team uses some of the same gametype settings as 4v4 CTF, such as; requiring your flag to be at home to score and a very short return time. Games on a map like Viking, for example, are some of the worst you can get, as the map is fairly large and requires you to push through an open field, and if your team drops the enemy flag, you’re almost guaranteed to have to go back to the enemy base to pull the flag again, which as I said above, leads to dragged out games that feel like a struggle to get anywhere.
I think that matches would be much more pleasant if flag at home scoring were disabled and the flag return time increased to 15-20 seconds. As it stands now, having flag at home enabled and the flag return time on such a short timer requires teams to be aggressive and very well coordinated, which is very rare for players in solo queue. I feel that if at least the return timer were to be changed to my proposed time of 15-20 seconds, the requirements for a team to be successful wouldn’t be as steep, especially for teams with solo queue players.
Does anybody else agree? Feel free to post your opinions too.
I think the flag return time in BTB is actually longer than 15-20 seconds already. It might be 30 seconds or longer if no one is returning it. The only thing that speeds up the timer is how many people are on the flag returning it back to their base. In any case, the flag should always be at home to score. Changing that wouldn’t make gameplay better, it’d just make it easier since it’d just become a race of who could get the flag back to the base fastest.

The return time is around 5 seconds in BTB. You’re thinking of the reset time, which is how long the flag takes to return itself when no one on its respective team goes to return it.
Oh. So you want the flag to take 15-20 seconds to be returned even with people standing on it? They’d have to increase player respawn time for that because that’s something that definitely favors the team pushing the flag.

I don’t think the respawn time would have to be altered. I think the current 8 seconds is plenty for my proposed settings, given the fact that most BTB maps are fairly big. If an increase were necessary, I’d say 10 seconds is where it should top out.

Negative, Ghost Rider. Reset time is 30 seconds. Return time is around 8-10 seconds with 1 person standing on it from the moment the flag is dropped. Return time and Reset time are stacked on the same value. This means as time passes for a reset of say 15 seconds, the waypoint icon’s circular indicator would be halfway. If 1 player would stand on the flag for 5 seconds then it would return/reset.
I definitely agree that BTB CTF could use some revisions. Almost all of the matches go into overtime at this point. 15-20 second return times seem reasonable. I’d wouldn’t mind seeing maps with more cover aswell.
