Big Team Battle Maps

I know you’re busy and all 343, but there is one issue that I think needs to be brought up again that a lot of people seem to be ignoring. That issue is the complete and utter lack of any actual BTB maps in Reach.

Right now, if you don’t have the DLC for Reach, there are basically no BTB maps on Reach. You have the Forge variations by the community, Paradiso and Hemorrhage, but no actual, developer-built BTB maps. The three DLC maps that BTB does have, Breakpoint, Tempest and Highlands (with Highlands actually being quite good, though for the life of me I can’t figure out why the SPARTAN Laser and Grenade Launcher haven’t had their places swapped yet) are rarely ever avaliable, since most people don’t have the DLC (or at least, one person every game doesn’t). This is a problem. Seriously, lets take a look:

BTB Maps At Launch/Through DLC

Halo: CE
Blood Gulch
Sidewinder
Boarding Action

Halo 2
Coagulation
Burial Mounds
Colossus
Headlong
Waterworks
Containment - DLC
Zanzibar
Relic - DLC
Terminal

Halo 3
Valhalla
Last Resort
Sandtrap
Avalanche - DLC
Rat’s Nest - DLC
Sandbox - DLC
Longshore - DLC

Halo Reach
Hemorrhage - Forge World
Paradiso - Forge World
Breakpoint - DLC
Highlands - DLC
Tempest - DLC

I mean, good lord, Halo CE, which didn’t even have online launched with more BTB maps than the biggest game in the series yet! Halo 2 launched with more BTB maps than Reach has BTB maps COMBINED.

“But wait, what about Boneyard and Spire? They’re in BTB too!”

Except that Boneyard and Spire don’t count because they’re garbage BTB maps that aren’t even BTB maps to start with. You don’t even need to play on them to see that both of them are clearly Invasion maps that got re-purposed for BTB when Bungie realized that they needed to bump up the total number of BTB maps. Because of this, we have to rely on Forge World community variants, with mixed results (some are fairly good…others not so much).

But with Halo: CEA coming out, we’re getting 7 more maps. Now, 5 of which we already know - Damnation, Hang’em High, Beaver Creek, 4th Map with Warthog, Firefight Map. That leaves two maps unknown; would it really hurt anyone if these were both BTB maps? Sidewinder and Boarding Action? Timberlands? Something?

At the very least, if there could be another map pack could several BTB maps please? Having to pick from “Re-purposed Invasion Map” “Hemorrhage” and “Community Map” over and over and over gets old real fast.

agreed.

i don’t understand why they don’t make the center of spire ( the phase 2 in invasion part) as a big team map.

and same with the other invasion map.

Right here is where I remember last talking about this. Maybe not this exact topic maybe, but hey, you feel something’s missing
PS: I think we’re getting Timberland at least.

It’s fitting that the maps are bad enough to go with the core gameplay in Reach. The game is just an all-around disaster.

I like the how the OP is a layout of the maps so that one can compare Reach to Halo 2.

You forgot to add

Abridged
Trident
Mt Lam Lam
Renegade
Wayont

to the list of BTB maps.

I like Abridged to be honest, and flag on Wayont, but other than that we need more, or rather better quality BTB maps

Halo 2 was the best

I still play Halo 3 BTB and it’s just so satisfying. When I try BTB in Reach it feels watered down for some reason.

I think it’s just the maps reach offers or maybe because there isn’t as many weapons placed on the maps. I know in Halo 3 BTB I don’t have to go looking for a BR like I do in Reach looking for a DMR. Hemorrhage is the best example of this. 2 DMR’s on the map? REALLY?

At 1:16- 1:19 in the debut trailer with the warthog driving around looks to me looks like timberland which would be great for BTB. It has also been rumored that death island will be one of the maps but i dont really know if thats true or not.

> Halo 2 was the best

Now that you mention it, Halo 2 had loads of awesome BTB maps right from the launch. Today in Reach it’s like meh, hence why I never play BTB.

What! Mt. Lam Lam is the best map on that list! Plus the name of it is awesome.

The only thing I would bring up is not all of the maps you brought up for any other Halo’s were ONLY for Big Team Battle… many of them are multi-purpose maps (Like Team Slayer, Big Team Battle, Team Objective, etc.)

Halo 3 only had 2 maps (Last Resort or Valhalla was repurposed I believe), Halo 2 only had… It was so long ago, but I want to say 2 as well that were only Big Team Battle maps (Headlong and… I don’t want to cheat for this, but I believe Waterworks or something? Ah screw it I can’t remember). Halo 1 was all about Blood Gulch and Sidewinder, but that didn’t have online so.

Halo: Reach shipped with 6 maps available for Big Team Battle, while Halo 3 shipped with only 3 in the entire playlist. I can’t even freaking count the hundreds upon hundreds of games I played on Sandtrap and Valhalla. Let’s just say too many.

You can’t fault Halo: Reach for not having that many ONLY Big Team Battle maps when none of the other games did that as well.

Being a solo player of Big Team Battle and Invasion (My two highest played playlists BY FAR), I loved the variety that Halo: Reach brought. Sometimes I wish Invasion was included inside the Big Team Battle playlist at 8v8, but whatever!

None of the past Halo games really hit the nail on the head with Big Team Battle. It’s not the most important or populated playlist for Halo games, that title belongs to Team Slayer gametypes.

What I can say, however, is that Halo: Reach started off better than Halo 3, and I believe wholeheartedly that the Forged maps are great. Abridged is one of my favorites, behind Utopie, Mt. Lam Lam and Renegade. Added tons of replayability to the once boring and unvaried Big Team of past games.

I understand the point you’re making, that more original and Big Team Battle based maps need made (Trust me, I’m the exact same way), but sometimes you just have to accept that what YOU want isn’t what the majority of the community wants. Would I love a brand new Halo: Reach Big Team map that was just as popular as Hemorrhage but not a remake? Damn straight. But people love the Blood Gulch/Coagulation/Hemorrhage map too much to just let it die so.

Just have to roll with what the majority wants and hope for more Big Team Battle variants. Well that or a Community Invasion playlist. I have been wanting that since the very beginning… for now though, I believe that the Forge World maps are injecting at least SOME more replayability and variation for gamers to play around with. That and it’s completely free, not to mention you don’t need a DLC playlist to play any of them!

If I get Valhalla, Sandtrap or Sidewinder/Avalanche as 2 of the remaining maps for the CE map pack I’ll be ecstatic (I say 2 cause its most likely Timberlands from the pc is already in there)

I hated it at first, getting used to it a bit more.

Community maps don’t count.

The Halo CEA map pack better have some good BTB maps from the PC version of Combat Evolved.

From the looks we may at least get Timberland, but here hoping to some more larger maps.

what’s all this buzz around timberland about? i never played the pc version version but it must have been one helluva map

Timberland

Even some of the new community maps are garbage. Damn you Mt Lam Lam! Bring back Paradiso, Utopie is terrible.

> Even some of the new community maps are garbage. Damn you Mt Lam Lam! Bring back Paradiso, Utopie is terrible.

Most of the community maps are…not good. And some have pretty dumb oversights; like how in Rebirth if you’re an Elite you can only get through the center tunnel by crouch-walking.
