Big Team Battle 2.0

Why is it that Halo Infinite only managed to get a maximum player count of 24 players in its big multiplayer mode while battlefield 2042 can get up to 128?

Because they’re two different games and two different developers? Lol.

But I’ve seen this around numerous times. It is hard to be critical of player count without knowing the map sizes. If the maps are specifically designed for a certain player count, 24 players can feel just as “big” or chaotic as 128.

I think 12 v 12 will be amazing. I’m excited that it will be dev made maps, and not just a throw in like it was in H5. I liked Halo 4 BTB way better than H5, because it wasn’t an after the fact throw in. Arena was way better in H5 of course.

To me, it sounds like HI is on the right path for both modes! Curious if we’ll hear about FF or WZ in the coming weeks / months.

Having more people wouldn’t necessarily make it better IMO. Maintaining performance across different platforms might of been a factor too?

I’m still psyched it was upped to 12v12 but I do wish we had gotten a bit more. But who knows, there could be gameplay elements they’re introducing that would make it just too chaotic with anymore players. Something like being able to call in AI units for support, like ODSTs dropping in to help out your team or something.

I feel like 100 player games of Halo have absolutely been tested behind the scenes since everyone is so keen on it. The tech clearly exists, every game possible has managed to fit 100 players into their own respective Battle Royale modes, without much issue.

I have to assume that it’s simply not fun, or well balanced. I’m not a game developer so frankly I don’t know crap, but here’s some thoughts:

  • Large maps with 100s of players generally require massive open spaces, if you’re repeating the smaller ‘medium-sized’ conflicts Halo usually has over and over again, then you aren’t really benefiting from that larger size. So you have to build the large open spaces: - Suddenly it becomes incredibly difficult to use a gravity hammer or sword. - Anyone inside a Warthog that isn’t a gauss hog is going to struggle to catch players hundreds of meters away, don’t even bother with a ghost. - Snipers and Splasers are going to have absolute domination. - Radar range is going to have to expand, or be removed entirely. - The already controversial sprint feature is going to become even more significant. - How the hell will recharging shields work in an environment where it is easy to hide?Balancing all that is absolutely possible, but sounds like a right mess, especially if you want to make a service game that sticks to the Halo formula. As cool as it would be (and I would 100% be on board if they did do it), I don’t think its going to happen.

Watch as I get proven wrong in like 12 hours

I love BF, and I’m pumped for 2042.

But I honestly don’t think Halo would play very well with 100 players. Who knows though, maybe I’m crazy.
