Better Space Battles

In Reach and Halo 4, Bungie and 343 each experimented with the idea of space battles, with each one taking place in a single level. While both were interesting and enjoyable to some extent, they each felt lacking in many ways.

The Long Night of Solace space sequence played, for the most part, like Firefight. It was simply a matter of dealing with enemy waves. The Midnight space sequence was more like a level from StarFox, albeit, fairly devoid of enemies. Both of these have aspects that I feel could be used to create something better.

What I hope is that 343 brings the space levels back, but does more with them. Treat them as you would any other level. Through in obstacles, enemies and more than one way to achieve your goals. Perhaps give use vehicle options, the UNSC and Covenant have both shown multiple types of space fighters, let us use them and their different abilities. Flesh things out, make them meaningful and make them fun. Hell, some extra vehicular stuff in space could be fun, and hey, if you can make it work, why not put some of it in multiplayer or (if it returns) firefight?

I feel the greatest weakness the two previous attempts shared is that they were so isolated and didn’t give either developer a chance to play around and flesh things out.

Exactly, if you took the enemies from the Reach mission and mixed it with the design of the Halo 4 mission it would be perfect. 343i just needs to add more missions and flesh it out more, maybe some space stations or boarding?

It’d be really cool if you could eject from a doomed Broadsword, navigate through zero-g using the MJOLNIR’s thrusters, and board a Seraph/Space Banshee.

They should let us fly a Longsword this time.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason the longsword wasn’t used in h4 is because of how wide it is. Everything would have to be rather wide or you’d need some “go verticle” button.

If they can stretch every MM map for sprint, they can most certainly expand one level to give us room to fly the Longsword. Maybe we could use it to attack larger capital ships instead of one small corvette like in Reach. They could also shrink the Longsword down and say its a new/different variant.

Or make a new vehicle that would fit single pilot use better.
I just can’t think of one…
So hard…

But hey your idea could work too, would be funny if they already did it…

Agreed, the space mission in Halo 4 was really one of the strengths in Halo 4’s campaign. I liked how it had multiple paths to the final objective and awesome obstacles. Halo Reach on the other hand excelled on the combat portion of space missions. It’s something they should explore more in Halo.

the halo 4 space mission was just trash imo, im not a fan of trench runs and with everything gray it was difficult to navigate and see, esp on split screen. it felt extraordinarily cheep and boring without at least enemy craft to fight. the reach one was great, exactly what it should have been. the sabre was way cooler then the broadsword and defending a station and then hitting an enemy capital ship was interesting and varied experience especially with different types of enemy craft and situations requiring different tactics to overcome. not to mention you actually had space to fly around in. the controls/implementation were for the most part well done in reach, and the level was actually very pretty.

tldr reach space mission=fleshed out and well implemented
h4 space mission=terribad

I’d have to disagree with you there. It was a starting point, but there was very little variety in what you were doing. It was like a mini-firefight in space. It was all the same one vehicle, with the same two weapons, fighting the same couple of enemies in the same place.

Reach’s Long Night of Solace was a great new direction for Halo. It was a 3-d space we were free to navigate and it had some truly epic visuals. I was thrilled to Halo going in this direction and enjoyed the mission immensely.

4’s Midnight was another great step in the right direction. It was a forward-scrolling bit without much room to maneuver, which was a cool change of pace from LNoS’s wide open canvas. I thought it was also a nice tribute to the final “race” missions in Halo 1 and 3. This was easily one of my most favorite levels in Halo 4.

All in all, I prefer Reach’s “open world” model to 4’s linear version. I think it offers more in terms of exploration, combat, and getting that “big space battle” vibe. But as long as they keep giving us space combat, I’ll be a happy Spartan.

And a non-sequitur while I’m at it… a word of advice to 343 concerning their scripts and writing: A title like “Long Night of Solace” wins out over “Midnight.” Every time. Just like “Pillar of Autumn” beats “Infinity.” Every time. Please bring back the poetry…

100% for another Space level.

I would love to have space battles for multiplayer. Like have Slayer and CTF game while your on maps like the last part of the space mission in Halo 4. I think that would be fun to play over and over again. Like having teams 4v4 or more will have this awesome feel to it. Were we are playing Halo but I’m in Star War Battle. Which is awesome!

"everything grey"

"trash, terribad?"

The Halo 4 space mission was epic, fun, challenging, and the soundtrack during it was moving!
Not to mention the “everything grey” comment is a bit silly, the art style in that level is easily the most beautiful looking area in any Halo game to date! Earth in the distance was so beautiful, and the art style was… words just can’t describe it.****Just look at these graphics! And the way the music picks up and becomes more intesnse! This is art at it’s finest!**

If 343i makes another space level, I don’t know how they are going to top the Halo 4 one, it was perfect!

I have to agree… the last mission in halo 4 well…most less last, was terrible! half the time I couldn’t tell " can I go here? is that a wall? so brutal… yes I think the music was good there, but challenging? no… frustrating yes! but that’s it. I think the reach one was better too.

I want a last level or close to a last level where I’m fighting my way threw hundreds of guys to escape or to get to someone important (don’t tell me halo 4 did this, because they so didn’t!!! that final boss battle was SO BAD!! press this button…press this… brutal!!!)

I just wanna have space battles in multiplayer. For example;

8 vs 8 players. One team in Broadswords and the other team in seraphs. All battling in space.

343i could have special game modes where one team has to destroy another team’s flagship, like the seraph team has to blow up the other team’s frigate and vice versa. Kind of like star wars battlefront 2 space battles
