I cant count the number of times ive been killed because i picked up a weapon someone wanted or hopped in a vehicle to drive only to get grenaded by a clearly disgruntled teammate. I know everybody has their strengths and favorite weapons but is it that important ? More to the point i want to know more about how the betrayal booting mechanic handles this kind of thing i never get the option to boot a player when they do this however getting revenge will assuredly give the instigator the chance to boot me. I was hoping someone would know more on how this works exactly and i am looking for any players who are team oriented i want to be able to play online without everybody going lone wolf.
The struggle. Friendly fire makes the team more careful but at the same time people can betray for vehicles and weapons and the one who was killed never seems to get kick option. I never get it until the same person kills half of the team.
Betrayals work on a “points” system. Doing ANY amount of damage to teammates accumulates “points” under your account. For instance (as an example):
Draining a full-shield teammate to no shields = 70 Points
Killing a no-shield teammate with no shields = 30 Points
1 BR burst = ~30% shields = ~20 points
Points are broken down into literally every single amount of damage from ANY weapon you can do to a teammate.
So, killing a full-shield teammate will net you about 100 points.
Now, to get booted, you have to be over a threshold value (points) when the betrayal occurs. I’ve noticed you can sometimes get 3 instant betrayals (any OHK weapon) and not get booted. That’s about 300 points.
Because of this, I assume the threshold is 305 points, for this discussion. As you deal damage to teammates, your points increase and increase. Over time, the number gradually, but slowly, goes down until it hits 0 again. When you get a betrayal, as long as this value stay under 305, you wont get booted. If you betray a teammate and the value is at 305 or higher, the teammate will get the option to boot you.
This is also why a team of 4 or 5 people can seamlessly get “tons” of betrayals on an individual without the individual getting the option to boot. It’s because betrayals are tied to individual people and NOT how many times you got betrayed.
That’s about as simple as I can explain it.
Friendly fire is really annoying and the thing I hate most is being shot in the back of the head by teammates during a firefight.
killing for weapons doesn’t happen to me often though.
however I still feel friendly fire is a necessary game mechanic.
lore wise, this is how Spartans trained. They’d form teams and would have to take each other out and you wouldn’t want to do something to hinder your teams chances of winning. This is why you shouldn’t be allowed to shoot a teammate and have no consequences. In most situations lore shouldn’t have an impact on multiplayer but I feel that friendly fire adds to the immersive effect.
Another point I have in favor of friendly fire is responsibility. I have to be aware of where my teammates are and act appropriately. I can’t rocket my opponent if my teammate is engaged in CQC with them.
So back to the question. Should my teammate be allowed to kill me for my weapon? No but the game shouldn’t restrict him from doing it either. Hopefully future halo titles will have a more sophisticated booting system where the computer/AI will be able to tell whether or not the betrayal was accidental or deliberate. Accidental would be I throw a grenade at my opponent and my teammate runs in to pummel him and gets killed by my grenade.
Also something I would like to see changed if it hasn’t happened already is how if someone kills me for my weapon and I kill him for it back he gets the boot option.
this is the system that uses how many times you’ve been involved in a betrayal whether or not you committed it.
Sometimes I think Lone Wolves should be added back into Halo for certain players that do this. Friendly betrayal shouldn’t be an option for this reason, especially when your teammates throw in grenades and end up killing you while you’re on a spree. I just don’t believe friendly fire is necessary.
It has it’s goods and bads.
If it could be modified somehow? Like if there is no enemy in the radar wide area you could not be killed by friendly fire, or something. Maybe that would at least decrease the amount of weapon/vehicle envy betraying. When in fight with the enemy or if there is an enemy in the radius of the radar, it would be on.
That’s my idea. Not sure how it would work.
I think that when the reticle is over a friendly player, instead of it simply turning green, it should become an X and the player’s ability to fire should be disabled.
Players will still be able to kill teammates with slow-moving projectiles like grenades, needles, or rockets, but at least they won’t be able to shoot you with BRs or etc.

True but this would invent a whole new way for people to mess with others.
Honestly if I notice someone repeatedly wasting power weapons and abilities found on the map, I’ll betray’em if I see them pick it up again. Out of courtesy I always check to see if they are competent enough, but I’m not one who likes to lose…
I find betraying happens to me quite a bit on both Reach and 4, I think that the system should take age and and reasons for betrayal into account and match those kind of players with each other to teach them what the rest of us have to deal with, because you have no idea how many times i have been matched with teams of 7,8 and 9 year olds that constantly get killed and kill me because im about to get a railgun, shotgun, or they just team kill the whole match in grifball. I even had a match in reach where the only thing the guy did most of the match was destroy our tank while we were being massacred by a falcon. So all in all the system needs to match maturity.
Honestly, for me it depends on the situation. If they’re abusing and just wasting the weapon then I wouldn’t mind if someone betrayed them. I try not to betray people, but Halo 4 wouldn’t be the same without friendly fire ;-;. If it was disabled/gotten rid of then who could I be passive/aggressive with.
It can be a good or bad thing.
When somebody sucks with a gun, but they keep picking it up, they probably deserve a good betrayal one for -Yoink!- the weapon and two for not using it to the best of its ability.
I will admit though that I’ve been betrayed by people who wanted a vehicle or thought they were better than me with a gun and then proceed to screw the team over because they destroy the power vehicle or they lose the power weapon after betraying me or just suck with it and don’t do the team any good.
The booting system has always been shoddy at best because someone will be able to betray half the team without penalty, but they boot the first person to betray them.
Its people like that who lose matches for the team, similar to the people who would just shoot rpgs at the floor in CoD search. Nobody likes them, yet they seem to avoid the very system set to get rid of them.
It really is situational. Some players really do get tremendous amounts of butthurt over it, but other people are so bad something just needs to be done.
I actually like friendly fire on. If someone intentionally betrays me for a weapon I will be that person they didn’t want to betray and unfortunately I will seek revenge by harassing them as much as I can.
The accidental betrayal I will always forgive even if the boot option does appear because there is no malicious intent.
Maybe most of you might think reading this that I’m not any better than they are but at least I have respect for all my fellow players and will NEVER intentionally betray.
