Beta testing an already-released game?

No words… though this is so backwards at this point I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when I read the new blog. Really a cherry on top to my night of waiting in menus and getting kicked out of map load screens. And nearly 200k people have PRE-ORDERED 343’s next title!!!

Steam does this constantly with their content updates. TF2 even has one. Why should this be any different?

they are doing this because the other updates have broken things so they are testing it in a bigger group to see if it works, with the pre-orders there is nothing you can do about that people will always pre-order games. This also isn’t entirely 343i fault this game was outsourced to other teams and microsoft probably pushed to release this knowing it wasn’t ready.

If 343 can’t be held responsible, because they didn’t make the game or any decisions, then what the hell is even the point of 343?

This seems extremely similar to what Dice did with Battlefield 4. They have their own CTE (Community Test Environment) where select players get previews to upcoming updates, and as bad as BF4 was at launch, since then the CTE has really helped it along to where it is now.

they can be held responsible, they just aren’t the only ones to blame. 343i still helped make this game just other people helped also.

“The collection was developed by 343 Industries in conjunction with Certain Affinity, Ruffian Games, Saber Interactive and Blur Studio. While 343 Industries designed the interfaces and online networking, Certain Affinity developed the multiplayer and Saber Interactive developed the updated Halo 2 campaign. The refined Halo 2 cutscenes were produced by Blur Studio. The original Halo 2 multiplayer designer, Max Hoberman, returned to work on the game’s remastered multiplayer levels. The Halo 2 remake coincides with the tenth anniversary of the original game’s release. Ruffian Games was responsible for developing the Halo 3 and Halo 4 ports. United Front Games worked on the unified interface that works across all games.”

Except I still can’t keep my campaign data and they have ignored me, but I digress. What were we talking about? Oh yeah griping about everything.

This is an absolute embarrassment. This game is a disaster of unparalleled proportions. It will never be fixed.

Well hope they get it sorted cause not buying halo 5 if they don’t

i like it . I just hope it works ! Fingers crossed I hope they continue to do similar type updates .yy

Not really, your an embarrassment for being such a pessimist. Instead of taking strides to help fix problems. Lazy @$$

So… What are you saying? That they shouldnt beta test the huge mm update? You want them to just release the update without proper testing and just hope all goes well? Sorry, but no thanks. We’ve already had that methodology with the game itself. More testing please!

I really don’t get the point of this post.

The point is that games should be released as finished products (as was always the case for a number of decades). And if that requires beta testing (to compensate for the fact that games are far more complex products than ever before), so be it; great idea. It’s a sad state of affairs where many gigabytes worht of updates over a period of 3 months still lands us at a point where we need to test further patches before releasing them.

Clearly there is no way the dev team though MP would work just fine out of the box - to at least some degree, they knew it was coming. This lack of respect from them (and/or their publisher, who of course has a huge hand in this) is quite shameful in my opinion.

It’s a beta within a beta. Inchieftion

Perfect example of why this should have had a beta before launch. We have been beta testing it since launch so I guess finally admitting this is a beta is better than nothing.

This is also clearly an indication that the people they are using at Microsoft to test this game should be fired!! Clearly not doing their jobs!

So lets hope the new group pre-beta testing before us, will do a much better job than Microsoft.

We’ve been playing the pre-alpha, and now we have a beta. Maybe this game will be working by the time h5 comes out.

This is actually a very good idea believe it or not. This patch must change the experience so much that they feel they should have a beta. They haven’t done this with their older patches yet. I am very hopeful for this one.

Dont they do this for battlefield aswell ? Can only make updates better tbh

People will complain about everything! The game is released broken, and people (rightfully) about that. They release weekly patches that are smaller to try and fix some issues on the fly, and people complain that it doesn’t fix everything. They complain that 343 should just release a big patch that fixes most things at once. 343 announces that they are releasing a substantial patch that they would like to Beta test first and people complain that it’s ridiculous to beta test a patch. Which leads us back full circle to complaints that this should have been done in the first place.

It does suck that the game was released broken, but effort has been made to fix it. The game has come a long way towards playability, and if beta testing a substantial patch gets us a smoother experience then I’m all for it. At least wait for this new patch to release before complaining about it.
