Beta Audio Critique

I first want to say all the video footage that’s made its way out onto the internet has really been amazing (just search Youtube for “MLG Halo 4”). 343i has done some amazing things with Halo 4.

One thing I’d like to address are the new sounds in Halo 4’s version of multiplayer; War Games.

Pros:
-The game sounded crisp
-I liked the new subtle music aspect
-I liked the final minute music

Cons:
-The new announcer is off-putting and sounds overly-excited.
-Muted spartans. In Halo 3 and even more so in Reach, your spartan would make verbal cues when killed or being hit. Halo 4 sounds empty in comparison.
-The weapons sound underwhelming.
-The overall feel and texture of the sound is really “tinny.” A lot of treble. The armor clanking, the guns, the grenades all seem to be void of the lower-end making the game sound hollow and really clanky…

Those are my initial reactions to the sound. There was a clear difference after watching the video and going to play Reach. Huge difference and I gotta say, Reach sounded more full.

I know this is just a beta, so I hope this is not how the final game sounds.

Thanks

I think they have been doing a great job so far, i disagree with a lot of your cons but I will say that the multiplayer announcer (I love Jeff steitzer don’t get me wrong) does sound a little too goofy. Also im not a fan of the new medals. Overall, I think the weapons sound great.

As you said, this is the beta and 343 has a lot of tweaking to do.

The muted spartans is the most glaring con in my book. That really added a visceral aspect to the game that is obviously lacking in Halo 4

I love the audio, of course, it is not final :P. I expect we’ll see some amazing sounds in the final game.

I heard a theory that it just wasn’t put into the game yet or it was muted for the E3 games. Im pretty sure it will be in though. I have no link for confirmation, I just feel like it will be.

a lot of the weapons sounded weak

I hope you’re correct

Why did you have to post something I actually cared about? I really wanted to vote for “What’s Halo 4?” but I think the sound is great. The only problem I have is with how the announcer says things like First Strike and Double Kill. (Assassination sounds cool, though.)

I find that there’s too much background noise which is rather distracting, makes it harder to hear players walking.

I like a lot of the new audio, such as when your Spartan lands after a jump it actually sounds like metal hitting something. I do agree that there isn’t much base, but did you consider that you’re probably watching on a computer with stereo sound at best, while the game will be played on a TV, hopefully with a subwoofer (however you spell it lol).

The AR is odd. It’s not that I don’t like it; it sounds great. It just doesn’t sound like the AR. Same with the DMR, which I thought sounded fantastic and realistic in Reach (but I would be the last one to know for sure lol).

I must complain about the Warthog though, the engine doesn’t sound like a Warthog engine and the turret sounds like my little brother hitting a tin can.
