When people get angry at 343 for sprint, most people say “blame bungie/Reach”. Remember though, Reach only had limited sprint. It was 343 that made it unlimited. And as much as i would like to see sprint gone from halo for gd, i think we all know that it’s here to stay. 343 will never remove it.
So…
Here is my idea, that i think will really help balance it. Also hopefully make both sides happy(ish)
Why not add in an energy bar? It would recharge just like the shields do. Sprinting, dashing, sliding, hovering, tackling and ground pounds would all use energy. The amount of how much energy is consumed by each ability can be balanced out with playtests.
I think adding an energy bar like this, would not only limit the use of each ability, but also add in another element of strategy. Players would need to be aware of how much energy the are using, so that they don’t run out of it when they really need it.
For example, a player sprinting would not be able to sprint across the map and then get into a fight and just dash away into cover.
What do you guys think? No more sprinting/dashing about in and out of cover risk free. I for one, love this idea
Energy bar in the manner described above wouldn’t stop people running away, as no energy would be used prior to the decision to run away.
I would simply prefer desprint if shot by anything while running on the ground ( speed reduced to walking not completely stopped) and no reduction in speed if you are in the air ( to allow the map jumps and ground pound to continue), in addition to a 2 second delay before sprint can be started again.

It would still cut the amount down by quite abit. People sprint into fights, they can’t sprint away. Same with people dashing into cover, they can’t dash into cover then sprint far away.
IMO your idea is much worse. That would mean that someone could just dash into cover and sprint away and it would only take 1 of his team-mates to shoot you once to cancel your sprint, meaning he will outrun you and get away to safety.

I would argue that with desprint and 2 second delay, that if they try to sprint into cover blindly they will be stopped and be forced to either fight back or use the thruster (i would assume this to encourage better awareness of the enemy positions). If they fight back and still outgun me then fair enough, i was a bad shot. If they thrust into the cover, they won’t be able to run for 2 seconds, and will likely be naded resetting the time again, in which time you or a teammate can sprint toward them and finish the kill (which would seem fair enough to me). If they wait the full 2 seconds and then manage to sprint away because you couldn’t land your shots, then fair enough they probably deserve to get away.

This would be true, but wouldn’t that only be fair (good team positional awareness). Again, I would argue that if you see the sprinter and start landing shots you will likely get the kill before their team can intervene (as their sprint is constantly interrupted). Also the question would be why are you sprinting after him in the first place if you know your shot will get him out of the sprint (removing the need in the first place).
I admit this is all theoretical, I don’t make games and have no way to TRULY test the implications of any changes in all situations, dunno…

Most of the time when people dash to cover then sprint away, you don’t actually get to shoot them in the back, they’re usually out of sight. There are some situations where sprint doesn’t ruin gunfights or the pace of the game, but there are alot of situations where it does. Removing sprint would mean there are NO situations that could be ruined by sprint. There are more con’s than pro’s with sprint.
Personally sprint has grown on me. Its not perfect but hey, its a beta and hopefully they’ll make some worthwhile tweaks.

I dont think an energy bar would be the best idea IMO, with the pace of the game and how much is already going on in the game it could be a lot to try and keep track of. Causing people to attempt to sprint or dash, only to look down and see they have no bar and watch themselves die.
it could be said that it makes the game more tactical, paying for your mistakes etc which is definitely true, bit I feel that the bar could be over punishing. You may THINK there’s enough on your bar to ground pound or dash, then realise you’re 1MM away.
There is no way to truly balance sprint without making the kill times similar to CoD, or to go back to a class style of gameplay like Reach and 4 where there are abilities that can be used to counter sprint.
To balance sprint and recharge of your shield, maybe it is possible when you initiate sprint, the little bar will stop instead of reset? Because when you’re timing isn’t right. Your will remain no shield which can be annoying.

So let me get this straight, You want to limit something even more then it already is? you already can’t recover shield(which is a big penlty to it) Every time you chose to sprint it resets said timer. and you have the weapon raising time that all together can lead to a swift death.
