Best Use of the Magnum

Here’s a question for those who use this awesome weapon.

When used properly, do you find it an effective countermeasure against those who are proficient in using the autos in semi-mid-range, and even the notorious Boltshot?

On many occasions, I find myself torn between rolling with the auto weapons like the AR, and choosing the magnum instead.

More often than not, I go with the Storm Rifle as my secondary instead of the AR, due to the fact that it requires more skill, has less range, and is not hit-scan.

Burst-firing that weapon feels the most rewarding, as I have to lead shots, and successive, rapid pulses of 5 shots apiece brings most enemies down quickly. Doing this, I almost never have to worry about the overheat, and even DMR users are not immune.

I occasionally use the Suppressor, but that weapon is often too short ranged for my tastes, though it definitely comes in handy at times. I can’t count the number of times I’ve dropped even DMR users with that weapon, even when people use it smartly at close range.

Still, despite my general inexperience, I find myself preferring finesse over such bluntness, and have resumed using the magnum more.

I know I need more practice, but I have already found that using it in conjunction with the BR and other utilities, grenades, etc. is definitely effective when used properly.

Am I on the right track, and are there other things I can do to make this venue of attack a force to be reckoned with?

Magnum?

Picked it up, never put it down.

Precise, fast, a powerful secondary.

1v1.

Both out of ammo.

Hows reloading going mate?

One Magnum does the trick.

Awwwww yeeeeaaaahhhh.

I love using the magnum for this one very reason: its rate of fire is faster than any of the precision weapons (7/8 bullets including headshot)

The Magnum is best if used while strafing and firing rapidly towards the victims head. Don’t forget to jump as well, also crouch while jumping. Make yourself a hard target.

At close range, it works well if you spam away at the player’s head. Keep in mind, though, it has bloom comparable to pre-TU Reach, so pacing at mid-range will lead to more shots landing. Even so, it still kills rapidly in a skilled player’s hands!

I would like to thank all of you for your advice.

I have regained my preference for the magnum, since I find it very well-balanced, and I love using the 3-shot melee technique; when I use it properly, people fall like stones.

With the advice about spamming the weapon, I have also found that works, and I always pace my shots accordingly.

At semi-mid range, I find that firing about 3-shot bursts in succession from the magnum work pretty well, and combined with alternating input from my primary, has definitely stood the test of time.

In the spectrum of close range combat, I have also found using it alongside my strafing techniques definitely makes a difference.

Gandhi Hopping, jumping over my opponent, circling around, and gaining height definitely allow me to compete against a wide range of adversaries, though I still have trouble with AR spammers and chargers from time to time.

That weapon update can’t come soon enough! Even when I strafe properly, the ridiculous auto-aim and magnetism make avoiding the AR and SAWs’ full-auto fusillades nearly impossible to avoid, especially when people charge.

It’s better than ever!
Damn, I like it more than the CE’s incarnation.
This weapon is a beast, it’s the most reliable weapon in the game in my option. It’s fast, precise and powerful. It’s only weakness is the user. You need to be familiar with it’s bloom. Once you mastered it, you can blow precision weapons out of the water.

You need to be smart with it. Just like most of the starting weapons, it’s cannot compete with multiple enemies perfectly (team shot), but in FFA, you can take out multiple foes in one big encounter if you used it correctly. Jumping-crouching-running expands it’s usefulness. Also you always can use your fists or the magnum itself to deal serious damage up-close.

I won dozens of Regicides only using that nickel plated shiny beast.
“I see, your favor is a 45.”

100% agreed. Except that it is a .50.

Very effective in CQC in gametypes like Rumble Pit and Regicide. I ran it exclusively once on Simplex for Regicide and it worked a treat.

Cleaning up 1-shots when the your automatic fails to yield the kill.

It’s frequently been my ToD in FFA gametypes. It’s like a pocket carbine when you need it!

It was just a quote from “Halo Combat Evolved” and “Halo: Reach”.

I see the magnum as a magazine extension of my BR/DMR. Often if I see an AR on the ground or another precision weapon I switch it out.

I use it the most often since I don’t really like the Boltshot, but I do have a plasma pistol class if I’m on a vehicle heavy map.

The magnum is nothing special but it gets the job done.
