Hi all!
My 13 yr old daughter is getting an Xbox One X for Christmas, and she has specifically requested a Halo game, but not a specific Halo game. She’s new to XBox and the Halo universe. I need advice on which game to get her so she can be challenged, it won’t be so complicated or difficult that she just gives up. I’ve read through some of the forums and some games definately seem harder than the others. Help??
Thanks in advance!!
(…and can someone tell me how to change my username??? I have no idea how I got “WornMarigold783” …I certainly didn’t pick it…)
Hmmmm…
Well, I know that the Master Chief collection has a lot of issues when it comes to playing multiplayer online. But since she’s only 13 I’m sure you probably want to limit how much time she spends on Xbox Live anyways.
The reason why I would still recommend the Master Chief Collection is that it has the first 4 core Halo games, and John and Cortana’s entire story through the Covenant War, as well as a sad but very good and satisfying ending with Halo 4.
Also, even though online mutliplayer is broken, local play works just fine (although the menus are pretty complicated) and the game has offline local co-op. So if you get a few more controllers she and her friends can have a lot of fun playing together, or both of you can play through the campaign.
Aside from that, I can’t really think of very many other Halo games that work as a good starting point. Maybe Halo Reach because it’s a stand-alone story with a clear beginning and end. What Reach really has going for it is she can customize her Spartan’s appearance and choose if she wants to play as a girl or a boy (that probably doesn’t sound very important, and quite a few people have told me it doesn’t matter, but I’ve been playing video games since I was about her age, and I’m telling you that yes, this matters very much).
Also Halo Reach has the multiplayer Firefight. Which is pretty fun. It also has an incredibly emotional story about duty and sacrifice (as far as video games go).
So my recommendation is Master Chief Collection first, and if she likes them, then go with Reach.

That would be your “gamertag”. You were provided a randomly generated one, but you can change it once for free. But I don’t think you can do that from the Halo website. You’ll probably have to log into Xbox.com or something.

All good advice. I second this. And there are various reasons why I would advise against starting on the latest main Halo game, Halo 5, including the lack of split-screen and a somewhat confusing storyline.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, all of the Halo games have difficulty settings. If one is too hard for her, she can always go to a lower difficulty. And the nice thing about the Master Chief Collection is that it adds all of the Legendary endings without forcing you to have to beat the games on Legendary difficulty.
The episodes Spartan Ops are also included and they’re a fun diversion from the main game. Mostly just fighting tons of Covenant, but she can create her own Spartan for that mode.

The MCC is the way to go! It has 5 games and she’ll be playing some of the best.
I think it’s cool someone that young is interested in Halo. I wonder where she found out about it…
MCC since it has the majority of the Halo games on it so she’ll be able to pick which one she likes. MCC still has a lot of bugs in it, but it should be playable for the most part. It’s getting an update this spring so that should help.

Personally I’d recommend picking up MCC, the ODST add-on for it, and H5. You can get the lot for about 60-65 dollars and it’ll give your daughter the majority of the Halo FPS campaigns to play through and have her spoiled for choice for multiplayer.
Master Chief collection. It has like 4 and a half games worth. Plus they’ll be exposed to classic Halo and a slightly newer one being Halo 4. Also the mcc games are easier to pick up.
Despite some bad glitches and problems, Master Chief Collection is the way to go. Especially on the One X since it will be getting a 4K update early next year.
Most people won’t agree with me so I’ll put it in a spoiler (no actual ingame spoilers):
I suggest HW2 Complete Edition. It is a RTS, keep that in mind. You get a great story with beautiful cutscenes, then guess what? You can play another two story mission, then what? Another campaign where you unleash the Flood.
Afterwards you can play as 16 different leaders, that’s a lot of variety. You can play classic multiplayer, eliminate the enemy to when. Blitz, stay on the zones the longest to win. Blitz Firefight, where you battle AI’s until you inevitably lose. Also, Terminus Firefight, where you defend a certain area (the Terminus) from waves of enemies.
The MCC is combination of four different Halo games, five if you pay for a $5 addon, which I recommend. It’s loads of fun and you can spend countless hours playing the campaigns, multiplayer, and custom games with friends!
I had looked at the MCC but wasn’t sure if that was the best route - I’ll let her start there!! And I’m glad to know there’s different levels of play, so she can start easy (she’s got pretty good hand/eye, so it won’t be long before her Dad I can’t keep up with her…she might be nice & let us play anyway )
To answer Hashtag John 117’s question: …I think the 1st time Halo entered her consciousness was in 2013 - with the Kia Soul commercial where the hampsters drive the Soul blasting “Party Rock Anthem” into what looks like a Halo type video game?? Yeah, she liked the song, but she thought the video game part looked really cool. She heard her Dad & I say that would be a hilarious Halo easter egg- where a Soul just speeds through in the background - she asked what Halo was so we told her. Then she found the “movies” in Netflix…I think she’s watched at least one.
