A large number of players from the Halo community believe that Halo 3: 0DST had the best campaign in the entire video game franchise. I believe this as well, but I have no idea why lol. Someone mind explaining to me what makes ODST’s campaign the best?
I personally don’t consider ODST’s Campaign the best. Mombasa Streets was tedious, and while the other levels were excellent, they didn’t make up for it. ODST was still really good though, a lot better than Reach, CE/Anniversary, and Wars.
Halo 2 is my favorite, followed by Halo 3, followed by ODST.
i think ODST and halo 1 were well done… The other halo’s exspecialy 3 felt a little two closed in…Halo wars i can see how it is period but halo 2 felt small! They are all great games never less…
The atmosphere, the music, the characters, the environments, the overall story…It was all great and very well done.
> The atmosphere, the music, the characters, the environments, the overall story…It was all great and very well done.
All this and the feel of being alone at night with no idiot to boss you around. Being actually like a normal human instead of some super soilder. The music was also wel done.
I thought ODST was better than both Halo 3 and Reach. But it just doesn’t compare to CE, or especially 2. Halo 2’s Campaign was beastly good.
Anyway, right now it’s looking like Mass Effect 3’s campaign is gonna blow all contenders for best campaign ever out of the water.
Well I don’t find ODST to be the best campaign. I think the Halo 3 campaign had the potential to be the best but then there were the Cortana moments (which I died during one) that I did not enjoy. I would have enjoyed them if I could still move normally during them.
Wait, wait, wait, you’re invincible in Cortana moments!
(ODST Campaign stole my heart away and never gave it back, but Halo 3 has to be my favorite because its the first one I played! Besides a short burst of Halo 2’s Campaign which I sucked at :P)
their were problems with all the halos, but ODST and CE were best campaign wise. CE for innovation and scale for its time, and ODST for the emotion and atmosphere. if halo 4 replicates both of these aspects it will definitely reboot halo.
wars, I like. I think its because I enjoy RTS games while others don’t. that’s why people are divided on their opinion of it. story wise, meh. it wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either.
I agree completely. ODST is my favorite.
The people that didn’t enjoy ODSTs campaign, especially Mombosa Streets, must just not be happy unless there’s stuff blowing up 2 feet in front of their face every 10 seconds. It did what it set out to do perfectly…create a lonely mysterious atmosphere in a dark deserted city while you look for your squad at night. The eerie parts walking thru the city running into drop teams of covenant spliced with 30-45 minute action sequences was a great blend and the music worked so good with every part of the game. I really think they did an amazing job with this game, especially with the small team they had working on it. ODST firefight was also great even though it was dumbed down horribly with Reach:( This is definitely on par with the rest of the series…way better than Reach.
The music and emotional atmosphere is what made it. Take those items out and the game wouldn’t be so great. It’s not my personal favorite (mine is Reach), but no Halo game is bad either.

I think agree with you on that one.

Agreed, the music and the atmosphere blended seamlessly, it was like an interactive Movie. sometimes I’ll go back and wander the streets of New Mombasa, without VISR, because the scenery is epic, so real yet unreal, and the music makes me want to cry at times, it’s perfect.
Bungies swansong indeed.
I don’t think it was the best. That honor goes to Halo 2 which beats every other Halo in every campaign area, except for it being a bit too linear.
That being said: there is the main downside to ODST as well: it’s too linear at times. Some levels were really great. The New Mombasa hub world for instance, or Uplift Resort and Coastal Highway. But then you also have shooting galleries like NMPD HQ and Kizingo Boulevard which weren’t that much fun.
However, each map had it’s great moments. The shaking of the “bridge” in NMPD HQ. The dark, mysterious vibe of Data Hive. The full blown invasion knocking at New Mombasa’s door in Coastal Highway (still the only time we actually saw a true invasion in Halo!). The space elevator crashing down in Uplift Resort. The drop with the droppod. And the list goes on.
But apart from having tons of memorable moments, I think there are a few other elements that made ODST so great.
Firstly, it came at a time when a lot of fans were wanting something new to be done with Halo. H3 received a lot of criticism, like Reach gets now. And lets face it: H3 was a bit lackluster. And then came ODST, with more focus on story than H3 had (with that moving more into H2’s territory). Which was smaller scaled and therefore easier to follow for a lot of people (taking cues from CE). And did something new, made Halo feel fresh again.
Not only that, but it also felt a bit like a throwback to classic Halo at times. No dual wielding. No epic, intergalactic space opera (which I do like, honestly), no uber jumps or feeling unstoppable.
Simply put: ODST has a lot of memorable moments, and came at the right time in the series. It’s not the best (to me), but it’s definately a great, great game.
Just too bad some people judge a game mainly on it’s pricetag (which was just 40 euros/pounds in Europe…20 below full prized retail games)
Such a tough call. Depends on the day of the week.
Especially since Halo CE got a facelift. Terminals and graphics really upped the ante. I played Halo CE when it first came out tons, but never loved every level until Halo CEA. It feels more fleshed out now. I finally see what people were always saying.
On the other hand, after Halo 2 (the highs were so high but the lows…), I got out of Halo and it was finally Odst that brought me back (September 2011).
None of the missions drag, or are too long. The music is awesome. Searching around the streets at night was really cool. VISR was amazing. I nearly lost my -Yoink- the first time a brute chieftain chased after me with a Grav Hammer(keep in mind I had never played 3)or hunters chased me through a building on Tayari Plaza. You think you safe in the building the you turn around and scream like a girl.
If it is not the best It is up there for sure.
yah, its awesome because it only plays for two and a half hours, then the credits roll(sarcasm). That is watching all of the cutscenes and playing all of the levels. Also, loved the plot, but it was no halo 2. Legendary on there was fun. I would probably play my PS3 before playing it again.
All the characters in the game are well developed, the story is well done, so is the music. I love Martin O’Donnell’s “Rain.” The Rookie ODST was also a very nice character, although I don’t remember him saying one word in the game. He’s a silent character, who’s part lone-wolf in the game. I think he matches a bit of my personality, maybe that’s why I loved him and the game so much (it also came out 1 day after/on my birthday but I didn’t have an xbox at that time
) The voice acting is awesome, the cutscenes, everything. Except they could’ve taken it much, much further. I hope they make a sequel to ODST.
ODST is too short. If it was twice as long as it is, I would say it’s better than Halo 3. But it isn’t. All hype before releasing was about making Halo game less epic and more manlike by making main characters “normal” human soldiers. In this way, it failed. Halo Reach felt more manlike, even through most of human characters in the game are bloody Spartans. However I like idea of aliens attacking large city. Mombasa levels where best in Halo 2 campaign, and in ODST they are even better. Also art direction made game looking better than Halo 3.
For me Reach > Halo 3 > ODST > Halo 2 = Halo 1
I’m sad to say it but Halo 3 ODST is my least favorite.
I just didn’t get as gripped by the storyline.
