This is not new information, I’m well aware of that. Please just allow me to vent because I am so deflated at the way this game dictates what I need to do in order to get anything for my Spartan.
I have the BP’s and said I would try to max out as many of the limited timed events as I could because they’re good incentive to keep returning to the game when a weekly grind might be too much. This was a mistake, as the way 343 has designed events is probably the worst system I’ve ever witnessed in a live service game.
Tying an event to one game mode isn’t wise because if people like myself don’t enjoy the game mode, they’re made to be miserable. You could argue “just ignore it then” but they insist on putting the challenges for the event in the same list of challenges as the battle pass/weekly rewards so you either need to play the event or be hindered by its existence.
Unfortunately for me, Fiesta, SWAT and Last Spartan Standing are all modes I have had no enjoyment in. I could maybe accept something along the lines of “play 3 matches” so people can try the mode out. Being asked for 50 kills, 10 back smacks, 3000 points or whatever makes it laborious. That is a running theme with the challenge system overall.
343 has said that “Spartan career progression will take time because we want to do it right”. Okay, fine, the challenge system needs to stay - I can live with that for now. Could you at least make the challenges simple and natural so general play will slowly drip them out? Being forced into specific game modes is a nightmare, especially when its ones you have no control over (Strongholds/CTF). Why can’t it just be along the lines of:
- Get X kills
- Get X assists
- Get X kills with auto weapons
- Get X kills with semi auto weapons
- Get X headshots
- Get X grenade kills
- Play X games
- Win X games
- Score X points
- Play X time
At a stretch, something like: Get X kills with BR/AR/Pistol/Melee would be acceptable because they’re always readily available but still asks for a more specialised playstyle. Anything further than this: Back smacks, vehicle kills, play X game mode/playlist becomes a much more stressful experience where you can make zero progress unless you fixate on it. Doing that distracts from the core fun of the Halo sandbox.
Whoever thought that Challenge based progression was a smart play, I cannot imagine what went through your head when you pitched this. Tying RNG to it makes it even worse. Holding people hostage and forcing them to play certain modes they don’t want to play is actually insufferable. I’m actively choosing to make myself miserable because of these stupid events and it’s making question why I’m even logging in. Which has never happened in my entire Halo career up to this point. (Been here since Halo CE)
Removing stuff like Killjoy challenges is not fixing it, it’s the bare minimum. This is not “fixed” or “better”, it’s still as insufferable and game ruining as it has always been. There is nothing natural or organic about this system and it’s only a matter of time until everybody gives up on it. I just want to play 4v4 or BTB…I’m so tired.
