In regards to Master Chief, I am a firm believer that Steve Downes knocked his role out of the park in this installment of the trilogy as the main character. He breathed more into John-117 than ever before. The total amount of lines and emotion probably toppled the first three Halo games of the original trilogy.
I for one believed that it was time for Master Chief, not only to talk more in general but to flesh out his personality outwards rather than keeping everything as the silent protagonist as we were used to over the years. He certainly retained Spartan Soldier-ness when interacting mostly with others such as Captain Del Rio and Lasky. When it came to Cortana, when it came to their relationship on a personal level, it certainly felt he got to say a lot more than what he wanted. On top of that, the inherent personal danger in this game for John was far greater than ever before.
When the story delved more into who our beloved Master Chief is as a person and not a machine, we start to realize- even he can shed some tears (let’s just pretend he did lol). Steve Downes manage to exact the emotional high of Master Chief at these cornerstone moment. I’m sure we’ll be looking at him a lot differently now that the story requires his voice to come through a lot more.
I made this thread specifically about Master Chief and what transpired with him throughout Halo 4 and not anything else. With all this being said: Do you believe Steve Downes did a good job of picking up the mantle once again and taking on the role?
I think he nailed it. With so much more of the focus on just him and Cortana, you really saw what their bond was like and how far he was willing to go for her and to stop the DIdact. This was also the fist time where he felt he failed. He did what he had to do like allways but it almost seemed like the cost was alot for him to take. Im hopping that we get to see him and Halsey together and see what their relationship is like.

I think that would be the next direction 343i would take is to actually give Dr. Halsey a bigger role in the games, discounting Halo: Breach of Canon of course.
Absolutely. Steve downes delivered and made the chief more than a machine. When he is fighting, he is pretty much the strong suit of armor we all know, but when talking to his dying companion, you can sense that compassion and sadness in his voice even under is stoic personality.
(Spoiler) At the end of the game, when he looks up towards earth and yells before he slams that nuke, I actually felt his pain and anguish. He felt that he had failed severely for the first time. The loss of Cortana also brought a side of chief that we have never seen before. A companion that had been with him throughout the first trilogy, one of the few intelligent beings that he can truly trust and rely on. He goes all out to try to save her yet failing to do so. This definitely killed a part of chief that he himself never knew existed.

Well that’s the sacrifice some of us makes that ultimately defines hero’s.
Definitely his best performance yet. This is the game were the Chief became his own character, rather than continuing to be an avatar.
