With the forums closing down in the next couple weeks, I wanted to put out 1 last poll, which game do you think has the best story? Have at it, and it’s been real everyone!
CE started it all and was very basic but we liked it enough to want a second.
2 expanded on everything, Gave the humans and covenant a more solid story.
3 is where it was all suppose to end. It ended on a good note. Cortana was saved, humanity was saved, the flood mostly gone. Arby was now a friend and a cliffhanger for a “what if”. What more could we want?
ODST was a nice add on but at the time didn’t seem any importance for the overall story. Just introduced characters.
This is where it gets bumpy
Halo Wars was solid, I enjoyed it. pretty straight forward. Stop the covenant, A Hero made a sacrifice and saved the day. Halo Wars mentioned Harvest but no one knows what harvest was unless they read some books
4 gave chief a ton of personality. And again, unless people read some books the story felt vague in some areas. Didact was a cool enemy and I didn’t mind the overall story.
5, I actually enjoyed the overall story. But as everyone else. Hated that I played as chef for one fifth of the game. We finally got blue team on screen and they ruined that opportunity. But back to ODST, we go Buck again and thats awesome. and again, without reading books theres tons of “Um how did this happen or how did we get to this point”.
Halo Wars 2 was great to see everyone again. Introduced a enemy that was strong and fearless and left us with” We want more Atriox and red team meeting with chief”
and infinite is well star wars 7, soft reboot living in the shadow of the first entry
My order is Halo 2, Halo 4, Halo Wars 2, Halo Reach
My infuated order (if things when how my brain wished it would) would be Halo 5, Halo Reach, Halo Wars 2, Halo Infinite
If Halo 5 was as it was marked, Chief being rogue and following his dreams, and being a good story, it would definitely been number 1 for everyone easy money. Halo Reach had about 3 missions of “the war” and everything after that was them having a setback. It skipped so many major things that made Reach fall. Halo wars 2 is my favorite story idea, I just wish it played a bigger role in Infinite, and wished Atriox didn’t just have an opportunity to just up and leave-- cause it was a stalemate between him and the SoF. Halo Infinite just didn’t end completely and nor will we see it anytime soon.
CE is always my fav. The universe felt so big despite a single location because you DIDN"T fight named leaders of the enemy faction. You felt like a super soldier, the covenant was the enemy.
2 always felt like it was trying a bit too hard in a number of ways. Honestly the covenant always felt kind of dumb for me after h2, only getting their threat back in Reach.
I liked Chief and Cortana in 4, but spartan ops, the didact, and the UNSC’s portrayal was a mess.
Well I mean CE just the nostalgia. There was no feeling that could match booting up the CE campaign for the first time with a friend and experiencing the flood, the covenant, and the ring for the first time. The game was so full of surprises fun missions. You just can’t beat the nostalgia.
Halo 2 for me. CE was critical to setting the stage for all games that came after, but Halo 2 was lightning in a bottle in terms of story. The machinations of the Covenant being exposed, the setup of the Great Schism, introduction of the Brutes and the Drones. Halo 3’s story was pretty ham-fisted at some points (despite being my favorite of the original trilogy to play)l and Reach’s deviation from the story Nylund put out years before was really off putting to me. My personal tier list is:
CE has the air of mystery to it no other Halo has. I would say CE has my favorite story due to the atmosphere of the game. (This is due to the nature of it being the original and having to set up the world and the sequels having the job of explaining more.)
I don’t think you can argue that H2 doesn’t have the best story. The intriguingness of the Arbiter’s storyline combined with the continuation of Chief’s is awesome.
Then H3 has the perfect ending to the best trilogy in all of gaming.
I will accept anyone’s answer as long as it is one of these 3 above.
Halo 4 definitely has the worst story for a myriad of reasons too long to list here. But the main one is that Chief and Cortana are completely different people from their original trilogy counterparts. I have heard this is because they wanted more “emotion” and to make them more like the books (this is the main reason any series should never span multiple genre unless it is insanely strict with its characters and lore to make each medium cohesive with the rest). The Didact/promethean and Librarian plot threads are just bad (and prometheans are not in the least bit fun to fight) and people like Del Rio make decisions no person would actually make just to add tension. There is more but ill stop there. Halo 4 really felt like 343 liked the idea of Halo more than what Halo already was.
Halo 5 is bad too but at least the prometheans were a bit more fun to fight here. Halo 5 really just suffers from the same things Halo 4 does but to a lesser extent.
Infinite is by far 343’s best game (gameplay and story wise). While its their best game they still force a little bit of that Halo 4 Chief in here and it feels terrible when that happens. It may be 343’s best but its still not up there with CE-3.
Then any non mainline game like ODST, Reach, Wars, etc i don’t think anyone can argue has a better story than the original 3 games. Some are decent and some better than others here but CE-3 are masterpieces in a class of their own.
Halo 4 is being let down by its campaign gameplay but the question is Story, not campaign. The story of H4 is a whole other level, the voice acting is just tremendous.
I think this is the kind of ad nuasem rhetoric that may have added weight to the decision to close the forums, but as a last hoo-rah Halo Infinite is the breadwinner for me with Halo 3 being a second and Halo: Reach and Halo 5: Guardians a tied 3rd.
For me Halo 5: Guardians was one of the best gameplay wise because of the Republic Commandos Squad based command system and just “Blue Team” really. The games marketing should have also been more aligned to where hunt the truth was going and well hunting the Chief.
Thus far your only rationale for Halo 5 having the best story is that it was a ‘clean arena shooter’ nothing about that statement is a reason supporting why Halo 5 had a good story…
I’m fine with the idea someone might like it… I’d just like to hear valid reasoning
