I’m not here to complain that progression is too slow, rather that progression as a whole needs to be revamped, as do the challenges (or if not the challenges, then the playlists)
Progression:
As it currently is, if you play 6 games, you earn the equivalent of a full BP level. If you have double XP active during those 6 games, then it’s 2 BP levels. I don’t think this does anything to help the health of the game. For starters, it’s all too easy to churn these games out in matches against bots. It also does nothing to encourage playing the game properly, as you get the XP whether you win or lose the match, whether you did well or poorly, or whether you even played the objective.
I’m fine with awarding a small amount of XP per match. I don’t think it’s necessary, and I think it would be better to award XP for matches won and for win streaks.
What would be better would be awarding BP XP based on how well you perform in games, with certain actions being weighted heavier than others based on the type of game you are playing. Playing slayer? Then award points per kill, and more points for multi-kills and sprees. Award a small number of points for other miscellaneous medals and assists.
Playing objective games? Award a small number of points for kills and miscellaneous medals, and more points for playing the objective, assisting with the objective, and objective-based medals.
This of course would mean there are a lot more points required per level, but that’s fine! Progression should be steady based on how well you do, with challenges being supplementary boosts. This would also encourage more frequent use of double XP boosts, as people won’t be as inclined to save them when they have a few easy challenges lined up. If you’re having a hot streak, you’re going to pop double XP until you’re done.
Challenges:
As it is right now, challenges are frustratingly specific. They require playing specific game modes, or using specific weapons. Even worse, some require specific circumstances IN specific modes.
Last week, I was trying to do all the weekly challenges. There was two challenges I had that were tough to get. Not because they are hard challenges, but because of how hard it was to get the right circumstances.
First challenge was to get 3 kills against players holding the Oddball. There isn’t an oddball playlist, so I have to cycle through other games to GET to Oddball. Then I have to let the enemy get the ball, and I have to land a kill on the carrier, fighting my team to do so, and this is assuming the enemy carrier doesn’t drop the ball the second they see us coming.
The second challenge was even worse. 25 kills in PvP Slayer. There’s no Slayer playlist. I got two matches of Slayer relatively quickly and got to 24 out of 25 kills. It took 12 matches of Oddball and one random match of 1-Flag CTF before FINALLY getting Slayer for the third time and finally getting that last kill.
Either introduce matchmaking filters/playlists or make the challenges more generic.
i.e.
- Kill X amount of players in PvP matches
- Win X amount of objective matches
- Get X amount of kills with precision weapons
- Earn X amount of multikills
etc.
Also, there should be more dailies. I mean, what’s the point of having 1 daily challenge that is just “play a game”? It’s just…weird. Add some simple challenges. (play 3 games, get 10 kills, win 1 game, etc)
Lastly, bring back the monthly/seasonal challenges from MCC. Make them a decent grind with exclusive loot/rewards that allow you to show off to others and say “hey, I EARNED this.” An easy one that pops to mind would be something like…“complete 10 weekly capstone challenges” or something like that. If multiple monthlies/seasonals are added, maybe have an ultimate monthly/seasonal capstone with an absolutely EPIC reward.
I want to work towards stuff. I don’t want things handed to me, I don’t care for “speeding up” progression.
I want to feel that I earned everything by playing well and by playing the objective.
