Battle Pass Challenge XP & Avoiding “RNG” XP Gain?

And a sub-title: “Non Battle Pass XP Levels Are Still Needed, Though.”

Ok, so, as we all know by now 343i has said that Battle Pass XP is tied solely to challenges, and not any sort of XP given for each and every match you play. I was on the fence about this at first , but the more I think about it, the more I feel kinda ok with it.

Hear me out: A lot of games with Battle Passes that dole out XP at the end of a match, the number is barely ever an even thing ending in a 0. I’m curious if Infinite having people progress the Battle Pass through challenges only is a way of ensuring some measure of uniform progression. Someone plays 5 matches, gets the challenge completed, and they earn the same amount as the other player who played 5 matches.

Example: In other games, one player gets like, 567 XP at the end of their 5th match which puts them 33 points away from an increase in their BP level, while another player got 602 XP and has increased their BP level by one. The first player has to play another match to get that level up, while the other player might be done for the day. Or, if someone joins a Social game mid-match because another player left, and they earn less XP for their Battle Pass because they were in the game for a smaller amount of time, that’s doesn’t feel great.

343i’s decision to tie Battle Pass XP to challenges only could be part of how they want to make playing Halo Multiplayer feel less like a job, like they said they wanted it to be. I think that it’s a good idea.

However, this needs to be combined with XP levels outside of the Battle Passes. Levels that you gain XP for per-match, rather than with each challenge you complete. Other games have Battle Pass progression and XP Level progression, and that’s a part of how live service games keep people coming back and retain players, especially after players finish the Pass for the season.

So yeah, I’ve come around to the idea of players progressing on a Battle Pass in a more uniform way, through challenges only, so that they know what to expect with regards to their time investment. But it has to be coupled with an overall XP leveling system outside of the BP Seasons for it to work, and for player retention and engagement.

I’m pretty sure most of us who are griping about challenges are also against the battlepass model but nothing we can do about that. Casual gamers like myself can’t keep up with all the different battlepasses in each game and we pretty much get shafted for playing multiple different games in a season. Naturally we just deal with it and the battlepasses serve to reward more dedicated players. However, I would love a more classic approach to unlocks like skull collecting and achievements while also throwing in seasonal unlocks through the challenge system.

i totaly agree that there needs to be a way to earn exp outisde of the battle pass but i do agree that it isn’t a bad system however

I also agree that we need a system that reguires less dedication for people who play mutliple games

I think that the way that Battle Passes never expire is their plan for people who play multiple games. There’s also the content they say you’ll be able to unlock by playing the single-player campaign.

As more campaigns get added to Infinite, since it’s supposed to be the main platform for Halo going forward for the next 10 years in an MCC-like way, I could see them adding campaign challenges that never expire. Challenges that reward you for completing achievements, tackling certain objectives in certain ways, and so on, and I hope that’s something that they plan on doing. Such a model would reward people for playing (and re-playing) the campaigns, and incentivize the people who are just playing the F2P multiplayer to buy the campaigns and play them.

You have really great ideas, but I think that no matter how progress through a game goes 343i will not be able to satisfy everyone when it comes to long haul. This is why through each game there is a change in Ranked systems. I just hope that it improves and continues to give us balanced competitive matches.

I prefer it, just had a baby and my play time is now zero hours. I’m planning on playing 1 hour of Infinite a night with my “me time” so will be great if they are quick challenges I can bash out by focusing on and not end up getting completely left behind.

I used to take my Switch to my girlfriend’s house so I could play Fortnite for an hour and do the daily challenges. As they were usually like get X amount of pistol kills, play this game mode, finish top 10 etc etc I could play in a way I could achieve them quickest.

It’s the first time that I saw that, even if don’t like the BP and challenge system, there’s something positive about it.
