Battle Pass Alternatives

I’m noticing that some people don’t like the Battle Pass and want to have it removed completely. Since this is a live-service game, money to fund and give players new content has to come from somewhere. The alternatives to cosmetics are selling power or splitting the playerbase via map packs or selling game modes. Selling multiplayer as a standalone game at a reasonable price only recouperates costs, and does not usually generate enough money to fund new content. What other alternatives are there? I’d rather take this than splitting the playerbase or selling power.

People wouldn’t have this opinion if the Battle Pass was just a better value for both premium and free players. The fact that free players get mostly filler and empty levels without any cosmetics is actually dumb.

Edit: My free friends don’t even get excited about ranking up the battle pass. “Okay last level I got nothing… and up ahead I get a challenge swap so that I can level up faster… to get literally nothing on the next level.” This is the biggest pile of hot garbage I’ve ever seen.

People tend to forget that back in the day, games purchased at full price with no monetization, after launch you only got 6-8 maps and a few game modes.

Monetization means free maps, modes, new armors, weapons, balancing updates, etc. Yes the monetization is a bit extreme and an easy fix would be to allow us to earn credits in game.

Yeah, I agree that the free Battle Pass is trash, but this honestly is the least damaging thing 343 could have done to Halo. What other alternatives are there for funding actual new content apart from luring in materialistic whales?

I have yet to see game that is live service provide more content than any game from the past that has use the paid DLC model.

…So there are these things called MMORPGs…

Fortnite has provided more content than any paid DLC game in player equipment, maps (although they are not permanent), and level-creation alone. If you’re willing to stretch things a tiny bit, Call of Duty Warzone has funded both Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, two full games, so far. Then there are F2P MMOs, which almost always sell power, and subscription-based and buy-to-play MMOs, which split playerbases through expansion packs.

LMFAO okay. Just look at Halo 5. Received more free content than all the Halo games put together. And that was because they monetized the req system

that have paid expansions. its literally the DLC model.

its literally the DLC model.

I’m gonna need you to google “games as a service” wikipedia and look at what the first example is.

Edit: I did the legwork for you - “The idea of games as a service began with the introduction of multiplayer online games (MMOs) like World of Warcraft”
