Base Color Coatings

I was a little skeptical at first when I heard about Halo infinite getting rid of the traditional color customization. But seeing photos of what some of hopefully hundreds of coatings we get to use in-game I’m also hoping they’re base colors like red, blue, yellow, etc. There are some pictures of the spartan customization we got to see and one of them they had a pretty much full orange coating called coral orange. hopefully, we get that for all the colors. What do you guys think?

343 mentioned months ago that they were looking into increase the starting/default coatings for players. I fully expect to have several basic color coatings from the start (i.e. matte red/blue/green/yellow/etc).

A friend of mine mentioned the idea of material selection for your coatings like matte, metallic, and so forth. I don’t think that will happen considering that we haven’t gotten any news about it as far as I’m aware. then again, we do have camouflage coatings. If material selection for coatings was coming I would want to be able to battle damage your armor or whether it in some capacity.

Materials will be one of the seven baked-in aspects of coatings. So there will be some more metallic coatings and some more matte coatings, and potentially other types of materials. But nothing shown thus far suggests any aspect of the coatings will be customizable on the player’s part; just the opposite, in fact, as when coatings were first detailed, they said “artist-approved”. So I think the most likely scenario for things like battle damage is that some coatings will look more fresh and others will look more damaged/dirty/battle-worn, but you won’t have the option to change those aspects of the coatings.

As long as they don’t go down the “Shaders” route like Destiny did, I’ll be fine. I like what they’ve shown so far.

I think it was cadet orange, not coral orange, which leads me to believe basic, solid colors will be available to us at launch.

I’m hoping for variety of solid colors as well - the orange one looks great. My favorites so far might be “noble defender” or “scorpion punch”

That’s literally what coatings are though, just without the ability to shade each armor piece individually. Unless you mean how Activision made them consumables, which I’m pretty sure they aren’t since they’re unlocked through the battle pass.

If we can equip different coatings to different parts of the armour then I won’t be so annoyed. I really just want to have the Primary/Secondary layouts of 2 and 3 with whatever colours I want.

Sadly, we know we can’t apply it per-armor piece already.
based off this.Pay close attention to how the armor colors are arranged into segments. You have core, helmet, right upper, right lower, left upper, left lower and lower body.

This is as customizable as it gets. Why do this?

Take advantage of FOMO / urgency. Keep people on the grind.

The system is anti-user.

To echo you, I agree that based on the ‘cadet’ coating we will get a bunch of base cadet coatings. I hope.

Except there is no FOMO in Infinite. Battlepasses never expire and can be purchased even after previous seasons end.

FOMO in game design works based on more than just time. Item rarity plays a major part in making players feel like they’re missing something and encouraging them to spend money to get it. That’s still FOMO and what they’re clearly targeting here.

One person’s FOMO slash grind is another person’s satisfying sense of achievement.

And keep in mind we’re talking coatings here. A combination of colours and textures. Something purely cosmetic.

How the Hell do people get FOMO with this?

If you like that particular coating more than the one you currently have - then get it. You decide if it’s worth the grind and/or $$$. Only you.

If you don’t like it - or don’t plan to wear it - where is the FOMO?

Just how many coatings are people planning to wear?

On one hand we have people getting angry that they don’t have the freedom to choose that particular combo of base colours they have been rocking for a decade… but now are angry that they won’t have enough space in their wardrobe for all the coatings they just have to own.

I can completely get where you’re coming from. I’m a completionist when it comes to whatever it is I want to complete and when I heard about Coatings and new ways to customize your spartan and millions of combinations to choose from I got excited because the only game we got to really do that on was Halo Reach and I thoroughly enjoyed grinding to get all the gear and everything else that came with it. even if I didn’t get to use it or didn’t really like it there was a sense of accomplishment that if I wanted to wear something in the future I wouldn’t have to worry about it cause I got everything. If that makes sense? 343 said that you wouldn’t be missing out on anything in the multiplayer. they stated that once you buy a battle pass you have it forever and it never goes away but I’m more concerned about whether we have to buy one battle pass each couple of months before it goes away. or would it stay forever? and you can pick and choose what battle pass you wanted to buy out of a couple you could’ve missed by not playing. I just hope that anything they add you can get and it’s not locked by time and FOMO sorta stuff. If I see something cool I wanna get it even if I have to spend money, that’s a lot better then not being able to get it at all.

We don’t have ALL the information and some of the concerns can be cast out when we will get our hands on the Beta this summer (and maybe other problems will apear). We just need a date, I want more informations and not speculations.

Battlepasses are indeed forever. They will stay in the store for purchase. You can swap back and forth between passes you own. They talked about it in the MP overview.

But overall it’s probably a mind-set you need to break. Over a 10 year period the grind would be relentless. And there will undoubtedly be sponsorship deals that are tied specifically to countries / regions (licensing issues).

And then there will be things like the Halo 5 reward for SR152. This will be (nigh on) impossible to do post Infinite’s release. There just wont be the population to get enough games. And I’m sure (and hope) it stays exclusive for those silly fools who did it. Respect.

Ya I’ve made my peace with coatings and in the end it allows for more player expression while playing and outlines are probably more accessible than the prior set up.
I think cadet coatings will give use a good amount t of default colour choices.

BTW, this thread is so civil, it exemplifies the community at its finest kudos to you guys, look forward to seeing you all in war games Spartans.

It is genuinely surprising that people are buying the concept that pre-baked color sets will somehow make us more expressive.

I guess it comes down to the number of pre-bakes they make available.

The current set up allows a thousand or so combos… from which pretty much everyone used the same hundred or so.

So, really… the potential to be more expressive is there.
