I personally hope Infinite ditches the Banshee shield, an addition to the vehicle introduced in Halo 5. I don’t see anything wrong with the way Banshees have worked in previous games, and think that buffing them is unneeded. What do y’all think?
I didn’t mind the shielding for the banshees…it makes sense (at least to me) that it existed on them.

Do you mean from a story perspective? I personally don’t care about vehicles being accurate to the lore… but if the Banshee gets a shield, doesn’t that mean that Ghosts and Wraiths should have one as well?

i think they visibly do?..i guess i never really paid much attention to it. now i want to jump on H5 and take a look at the shield/health for each lol

Huh, the more you know. It’s been forever since I’ve touched Halo 5, so my memory of the vehicles isn’t the best, haha!
Agree 100%. It was super annoying in H5 when you would break a banshee shield and they’d just fly away and hide until their shield recharges then they’d come back and you’d have to break them again. Felt like you weren’t doing anything. For whatever reason no one focus fire’s either so you could go full games with one person raking in kills with a single banshee.
The Banshee’s wouldn’t need shields if vehicles just worked like they did in Halo 3. Giving straight up shields to Banshees is the inevitable result of keeping the trash chip damage system from Reach.
Without the shields or the ridiculous flipping potential of a Reach Banshee, a Banshee would get torn to shreds by small arms fire in very short order. Bring back the Halo 3 vehicle system and Banshee’s won’t need shields, plus we get the added benefit of once again rewarding driver/pilot skill with survivability.
Shielding on the vehicles at least for me depends on a lot of different factors.

It also depends on if the weapons are projectile or hitscan as well. One huge problem I had with Halo 5 was that almost every weapon was hitscan, so the chip damage system was even worse. I think in that scenario, banshee shields aren’t that egregious. I agree with you, the Halo 3 system was great and not only promoted good vehicle play, but also to incentivize power weapons that kill the driver immediately. Small Arms melting any vehicle isn’t fun and doesn’t promote going for power weapons. The hitscan weapons on H5 just exacerbated the problems with the new health system.
I do like the idea of shielded vehicles, but having both the banshee and wasp present in the game, I’d rather see the wasp retain the shields as it fits well with the bobbing and weaving, dodging in and out playstyle of the wasp.
Vehicle Health as a whole seems to be entirely different in HI. In an ask343, they mentioned that shooting particular parts of a vehicle will change the way it handles. I think this is an interesting and exciting change provided it is done well. I’m not sure I want a BR blowing off my warthog tires in a burst, but if a sniper did it in one or two shots, well that’s probably pretty acceptable. The priority should always be shooting the driver out, so I hope it isn’t more effective to actually just shoot out the wheels or shoot off the wings to outright destroy the vehicle, but rather to make it an easier target.
All in all, there are so, so many factors that play into these systems. I hope 343 goes with a good system that promotes vehicle play and countering those vehicles with power weapons.
So long as banshees can no longer spam evasion to become indefinitely untouchable like they can in Reach I don’t really care. If they receive a shield in exchange for losing the ability to spam evasion that’s a fair enough trade in my eyes. It also give competent pilots a little bit of breathing room to strafe without getting torn to ribbons too quickly.
I don’t think the shield is the only way it could have been reworked but I’m certainly not against it either.
Idk, the shipeds should be only on an upgraded variant. The base model should be unshielded.
