“Hijacked a Banshee during the Reach Campaign.”
So I just got the Banshees, Fast and Low achievement in Halo: Reach after at least ten minutes of fighting with the Banshees. I was trying to use a Plasma Pistol to EMP the two Banshees and the end of the mission Tip of the Spear, but no matter what I did I’d either miss my shots due to being unable to get them close enough to lock on to or they’d fly away before I could get to them. It took a Banshee getting stuck on a rock for me to hijack it.
Is it possible to get this achievement through skill? Or is it strictly based on how the A.I. behaves (I.E. random chance?)

As I recall it was easy, I got it on my first playthrough(I think…this is going back almost 8 years lol) by going up to the crane? thing to the right as you’re approaching the spire. Banshee flew right to me and I just hijacked it. I don’t even think I knew it was an achievement at the time it just kinda happened.
It’s kinda random in a sense because sometimes the AI will dodge your locked on shots on them. Though I have seen a video where a player went AFK for a moment and when he had returned, a banshee was sorta stuck under a ledge in front of him and he was able to hijack it and get the achievement that way. It all comes down to timing and patients to be honest.
I wouldn’t say “random chance” the A.I. is mapped so it attacks you in a sweep, firing a few times then pulling up. A plasma shot will always cause them to boost after shaking off the stun but you can easily bait them under the half broken bridge off the right side.
