Banning Conditions

I haven’t been banned, so this isn’t a thinly-veiled complaint. I am genuinely wondering if there’s a place that lists and describes all the restricted actions/behaviors that will get a player banned (cR, console, etc.).

Also, I’d like some clarification about “credit boosting”. I know about challenge resetting, but can a player get banned for regularly playing a non-matchmaking mode and thereby earning lot of “completion” credits?

I don’t know, but I know a few less-well-known offenses off-hand. For example, getting 0 kills in multiple recent Firefight or Multiplayer Slayer games – that’s how they guess that you’re AFKing, since there’s no facility to detect the act itself.

If you’re actually playing (and killing) and not AFKing? Nope. Perfectly fine.

It’s just that I go through the “Why I get Banned” thread occasionally, and some of the complaints seem legit. But that makes me think there’s either some information the complainer left out, or the Banhammer is much more strict than I’m aware of. Basically, I want to be informed so I can avoid incurring 343’s wrath.

The banhammer does seem notably less effective and less accurate in Reach than it was in Halo 3, so I can understand your concern. I don’t believe that there is a specific list of offenses, but you could always ask about a specific behavior if you fear it may lead to unexpected punishment. :\

Generally, you don’t have to worry. Most of the behaviors that result in banhammer false-positives, result in false-positives for minor offenses and hence incur minor punishments. You (probably) won’t get permanently banned from Xbox LIVE or anything for accidental offenses.
