Balances/Bugs/Review From a Top RTS Player Part 1

Hello everyone! I am here today to give some feedback on halo wars 2 that I feel is much needed not just from a halo wars standpoint nor from a RTS on pc enthusiastic. The feedback I’m giving is from years and over 130,000 Hours played of Console RTS games Some back round on myself is I am Currently the best player on Command and Conquer Knes Wrath on Xbox. Ive won $3500 total on this game I was Number 1 On Tiberium Wars until I quit and for the first 6 months Of Halo Wars 1 Before I quit I won Just shy of $3000 in private events.Also a top player on Red Alert 3 (all of these are the console version) I only say this because obviously saying that Im the best at Halo wars 2 In the beta Stage after such a short time is kind of arrogant so I thought I would just post my past experience and see if its valuable to you all. I have gone very far with this beta and I have to say I really enjoyed my time streaming the game. For the most part the community that plays this game is great and I feel like this game will have a very successful future. Unfortunately unlike some others who were lucky enough to play this game every day from the time they woke up until the time they went to sleep I was only fortunate enough to play the Deathmatch part of this game from Monday night through yesterday so the beta extension was really awesome for me because it allowed me to reach onyx even with my time restrictions due to work .
First lets go over the General Game itself not specific to any faction or unit. The mechanics are better from the first in my opinion but there are a lot of tweaks that I would love to see in terms of commands.
New commands NEEDED for this game to draw in and keep higher level RTS players. (this will not affect newer players or make the game harder, It will simply make the game at a higher level of play better)
A split command for your army: (Spread) This is a must have command for any real true RTS game and could easily be implemented into the game. :imagine a player using a mac blast on you and because you are fast enough you are able to split your army and look like a pro completely dodging their ability with your skill J
Being able to select individual units within the same unit type. So this might be a bit harder to explain. But imagine a chopper battle where the ram is very important or any other kind of battle where unit abilities are very important. I would like to (click over with the right trigger since that’s the way its currently set up) to highlight to choppers. Then I would further like the ability to have it open a vertical bar of choppers possibly with numbers next to each one where if highlighted it will just select that one chopper and leave the rest out… With this ability you could select individual choppers and ram every single one of your opponents vehicles with utter ease and do it almost 300% faster than if done manually.
The quick scroll command with the bumper needs an overhaul. A much better way of quick scrolling for console RTS games is when the quick scroll button is held down. It should pull up the minimap and let you zoom around the map that way. This is faster and gives you more control over the battlefield at an accelerated pace.
The Faction based powers needs to be accelerated to the losing player. An example would be for their to be an XP bar on the screen somewhere where the player can see how close they are to the next commander point. Triumphs would gain u X amount of XP while faults would grant you a higher amount of Xp. (this helps keep the game in check so that the player who is losing can make a comeback even if its slight)
When hitting down on the Dpad it should not select the units you are jumping to. Instead just simply jump to that spot on the map. The big reason for this is so that if you have units selected and you want to quickly bring them to a specific spot on the map as backup you can select the units that you have just created. Jump to the army with down on the dpad and because you still have the previous units selected it would allow you to click the floor next to those units and continue to micro the current battle. This is a must have change for the game to advance.
There are a few ways to implement control groups but because of the current way the controller is set up for the game it might be difficult but I defiantly have some ideas for how this could be done… Especially if you give us the ability to customize our controls.
Also It just occurred to me that you could simply (when selecting all units) once you have scrolled over to that one type of unit. The other types of units disappear and instead across the bottom of your screen in the same spot it opens up all of those units of the same type separately so that you can select one of those units 1 at a time for the awesome effect of being able to use their abilities one at a time quickly J (obviously it would only show 6-10 across if they have more than 10 of that unit and if you scroll all the way over to the 10th then it simply slides over like a scroll. Being able to put your units in a formation would be splendid as well.
REVERSE MOVE. This is defiantly needed and side amour and reverse amour needs to be more of a thing for this game.
The (right on the Dpad) needs a LOT of fixing. And I think it should be swapped with the select button on the controller but that’s my opinion. It needs to actually coordinate with that voice on screen more fluidly. Any time myself or a teammate is under attack or a new unit is spotted or anything of the sort. Hitting that action button should immediately jump you to the source without any bugs or complications.
When making a waypoint by holding x there needs to be a much clearer incantation that there was actually a waypoint placed there and even a ping on the minimap would be nice.
Now onto ingame bugs (will not be talking about loading screens and crashes and any of that. The devs will surely fix that on their own before the game is released but if not I know of many just ask)
Units Falling under the map
Units not using their ability when told without spamming y or holding y
Some units not using their abilities at all and yet showing the recharge like it was used.
Scrolling outside of the map due to a units ability was kind of funny but needs fixed.
Some air drops need fixed because they just sit their sometimes and shoot infinitely… Obviously that’s a big problem.
Commands feel really slow and sluggish. Sometimes if I click a button to quickly after a previous command it gets ignored and this is not ok for players like myself who are trying to do as many things as possible in a short amount of time. Control is key in an RTS.
When a grunt is down to 2 it will moonwalk away from its command if told to capture anything or shoot anything. It looks funny… Until you realize its useless.
What needs implemented for this game to prosper.

Please make unit stances. I cannot describe to you all how important this is to an RTS. Being able to select aggressive or hold ground or unaggressive would be game changing. You were all their this weekend… Grabbing a reactor and at the last second your squad gets shot and runs away to chase a unit even though you never told it to. Being able to put snipers on hold fire so they don’t uncloak themselves would be FANTASTIC. The perfect scout for artillery and just in general.
One thing I noticed that I dont think anybody mentioned is that when told to attack an opponents unit. If that unit goes into the shroud your unit doesn’t pursue. This needs changed.
Automatic monthly leaderboard resets. (boosters and glitches would be minimized to just that month)
Replays. PLEASE give us the option to archive up to a certain amount of our games to be looked at by ourselves and friends with the ability to upload to a community site to be doanloaded or possibly uploaded to youtube. (make sure when rewatching the game its from a movable moderator standpoint and not through the eyes of just the uploader) but through the yes is welcome if added second.
A moderator option with up to a few slots. I see this game being a big Esport game if successful and if changes are made. This is not an option but a necessity for this game. Please make it happen.
And moving onto the teams and units themselves.
Powers can all stay the same. I think they do what they are meant to do perfectly. (except for some buggy ones but when they don’t bug they are fine)
Don’t complain about the late game powers 1 shotting your base. Its what they are meant to do. Save yourself or possibly end a game.
Increase current population. The xbox one can handle it. Lets go.
USMC-Balances
Infantry
Marines rockets need nerfed that’s it.
Flame squads don’t need nerfed do to popular belief. Simply make them a tiny bit more expensive. If im building these and you LET me get to your base unharmed and untouched then you best believe I want to be able to do the damage they do. (possibly 10-15%) less to Cov bases but that’s all ied do if that.)
Snipers. Decrease range 20%. But keep the range they currently have if in a garrison
Cyclops. Don’t change a thing.
Commando… make him better… just all around better. Start from scratch and remake him…
Vehicles
Rabbit (this depends on what you do with the chopper) if the chopper keeps its gun out the gate then this needs a minigun on it as well. If you take away the choppers gun then keep it the way it is upgrade wise. Ied say 15-20% health decrease 10% speed increase and 10% damage with grenade increase. And take away the silly drone for its last upgrade. People aren’t going to be spamming these in that tier for that to make any sense. I have some ideas to change that upgrade to just ask.
Warthog. Decrease gaus range. Make it one less population.
Wolverine- Needs damage increase of 20%
Kodiak – My favorite unit great job Devs I love it. Increase damage 10% towards structures and 15% towards larger vehicles. Give it a secondary attack when in siege mode of hacing a single large shell with no spread damage and a second attack with a weaker spread shot for taking out large grouped up units (this is NOT a must by any means just an opinion of mine for this unit because I love it J )
Scorpian- Needs major overhaul. Felt very underwhelming across the board.
Air
Hornets are great
Nightingales do NOT need nerfed they add much need micro into halo wars maybe start out with half current heal rate with upgrades boosting it to the current heal rate. That’s all Ied change.
Vulture. (fix their nuke bug please) make them less affective vs the opposing anti air vehicles and then these are just fine for what they are. No overhaul needed.
Cov
Infantry
Grunts are just fine. Just fix their bagginess
Jackal counterpart. These just suck. Complete overhaul needed. Obviously don’t make them as good as snipers but at least make them useful
Hunters. These seem to be perfectly balanced for what they are meant to do. Maybe 15-@0% decrease vs structures but that’s it even if that.
Jumppack Brutes…… Debatable. My opinion on these would not be to nerf them as many would have you believe. A simple population increase to these to 3 or even 4 and making the initial squad 1 less would fix these. I found that my issue with these wasn’t the damage or Health. But simply the sheer volume of them. Even with 6 or 7 snipers killing these as fast as they do. These brutes can wipe ur base and move on while still getting shot at because they simply have so many of them. This is my opinion on these. (also stop letting them jump into the structures) and for those who were wondering about the mystery of how to get into structures with these its simple. Have the ability to have them drop mines when they jump. The ability is what allows them to jump inside structures. A simple coding bug.
Leader. Major overhaul just like the USMC commando. VERY underwhelming compared to Halo Wars 1 and very disappointing.
Vehicles
The Choppa… Oh the choppa. The current player with the most wins has the most wins not because he is the best but because he got his hands on this unit before everyone else and exploited it to the max. This single unit alone broke the betas meta dominating the early game with no immediate way to stop it from taking map control. A certain player used the chopper and his seemingly unlimited amount of time to play the game once the beta released to climb the latter to the top without any micro or macro to speak of. In fact this player had this strategy done right back to him on the last day by 2 good players and he fell victim to his own broken unit. Showing how broken it really is. Now lets talk about a fix to this. As said before. Give the opposition a balance. The rabbit should have a gun from the start or take the choppers gun away. Its that simple. It doesn’t need to be talked about further but im open to criticism on this matter.
The covenants anti air vehicle needs a massive boost of 20% damage towards air and 20% Health increase.
The light tank needs a speed increase of 20% Damage increase of 20% and a Health decrease of 25%. Would make this perfect for what it is suppose to do.
Locust- This unit was a Joke. Increase its damge by 30-35% and maybe then Ill build it along with everyone else.
Wraith needs an overhaul just like its counterpart the scorpion. Very underwhelming
Air
Banshee needs a speed increase of 20% and a damage and hp nerf of 15%
The Flying shield should reduce 10% damage to units and structures within it.
The super air unit/artillery needs a massive hp increase while in the air and damage increase while in artillery mode. Or simply reduce its population by 2 or 3 to make it viable in top tier play.

My overall review on the beta.

Flamedremon I completely agree with you about everything you said. I think everyone else should agree with you to, and here is why. I watch all of Flamedremon’s streams and videos, and they are some of the best I have ever seen. Flame plays all the real time strategy games every day, good or bad and analysis them closely to figure out how they could be better. As many of you probably do not know this, Flamedremon single handily kept a RTS alive on the Xbox 360. That RTS is know as “Command and Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath”. He brought the community together to turn a dying game into a game of fun and challenges that everyone enjoyed. I remember when I first got Xbox live for the first time on 360, I really did not know what games to play, then I met Flamedremon and he showed me “Kane’s Wrath” which gave me something to do everyday. I would try to get better with a bunch of people that where starting out as well. We all would try to progress through this leader board system that Flamedremon set up himself for us all to enjoy and challenge ourselves with. What I mean by all this is that Flamedremon is a really great guy and he knows what he is talking about, and you all should read this article and find out for yourself, thank you and good night!

Great suggestions Flamedremon. I’ve also watched your streams and learned a lot from you. All across the board there are great suggestion in the Forum. I sure hope in the upcoming months the developer team will review some of these insights.

I can see you are very passionate about RTS and you wish the best for this game. Obviously, due to the size of this post, there’s a lot that needs to be fixed. However, I cannot speak for personal experience since I was not able to play the beta. My Gold expired the exact week it came out, so I was unable to play it, but I was never a big fan of online multiplayer for HW1. I always lose, so I only did skirmish. I sure hope HW2 has a bright future for MM, so I might play it more often.

Im sorry to tell you this but you don’t know the game and what you’re talking about. Your opinions aren’t even the facts or true. Go back to KW you don’t play halo wars at a high level. I beat you over 7 times and you’re thinking you’re decent. I have proof of all 7 wins as well if you’d like to watch! Btw I have over 7 year experience on the first game and understand the game a lot better than you. I am ranked top 15 players to ever play that game on first page of every halo wars 1 leaderboard as well. You really need to stop trolling and get over you’re huge ego and stop blaming your teammates for your own mistakes. I saw you every 5 mins on twitch saying how your teammate lost you the game but somehow you lost all your units as well. You aren’t a team player and can’t take responsibility for your own mistakes

@youngberk: Bro, choppers were broke. Just admit it. I won plenty of 2v1s with my chopper rush strat, it’s totally unfair. It’s not really skilled play when you spam an unbeatable unit. I don’t know if I would call my wins “skill” rather than abusing a totally OP unit. I certainly beat my fair share of other chopper spammers, AND I never once lost a game that my teammate or myself didn’t crash out of because of the bugs. Yes, we were both chopper rushing. And we often went into jet pack brutes and wraiths mid-late game.

There isn’t even a formal way to see who’s best because there are no private games nor 1v1s. Stop with your inflated heads.

Sorry, back to the topic: I can agree with most of this, it goes with what I put in another thread. I still personally think jump pack brutes SHOULD be able to jump into buildings, and I think reverse of what you do: they should be able to jump on units and buildings from the beginning, even without the command point upgrade. They ARE anti-building units, after all. Plus they would totally fall out of usage if the Y ability couldn’t be used to hit other units or buildings. I do think the damage should drop a little, and the pop per squad definitely bumped to 3.

I wasnt able to read most of the post because my eyes were melting. However the parts I did read I agree with.

The jackrabbit should have a weapon to start with. Maybe a MG then upgrade with the Glauncher. But then again I think CA was trying to balance the two by giving the jackrabbit speed, and the chopper weapons over speed.

With the brutes, the health is essentially the number of men in a squad. And Id rather see a health nerf the a population nerf

Quick background for me, I have played Starcraft for 20 plus years. I have played halo wars. Good job and I agree that RTS needs to be user friendly so you can move as fast as possible. I did choose to remap my buttons because I own an elite controller. I switched LB (scroll) to LT because it felt more natural coming from halo wars 1. It seemed to only work when the hair trigger was applied to the LT for the fast scroll but it did work. What I also think they need to apply is when you or your Allie is under attack you should be notified and a noise/ping should alert you to where and what base is being attacked. Game is very early in its stages but I love love love the double resources vs the reactor in halo wars to tech up. This forces you to expand and own the map like Starcraft. You can’t win the game off of one base like you can in halo wars. Huge improvement !!

I would kill for some unit stances. really I would.

Tired of my units chasing stuff when I don’t want them to.

I think the simplicity makes the game attractive. I’d love complex commands but others would disagree. Best I can imagine is a shift button, standard controls allow you to play the game fully… But basic. Hold the shift and learn the advanced.

im not terribly keen on it but to add more controls…

May also aid the circle menus. Obviously more buildings/units need to be added but cluttering up the CMenu compromises the system that suits consoles. Units on normal, upgrades on shift.

Sloppy. Released way too early. Extremely buggy. Needs a lot of work. All of that aside. AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF FUN. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to play this even if it was for a short while. I think it was a great move for you guys to put this game out in beta so early to get the kinks out. (after all isn’t that what a beta is for?) I would Like to add I hope you bring in Some really good Console Rts players to test this game out for you and balance it out before the full release. Everyone has a valid opinion but I think certain individuals deserve special attention for this matter. Don’t give in to pressure when the masses are yelling NERF NERF NERF when in reality there is a counter they just don’t know about it… So many RTS games suffered from this and I hope it doesn’t happen to Halo wars 2. Again thank you guys for this opportunity I had a real blast streaming this game for the time that I had with it. And to everyone else. See you on the battlefield :slight_smile:

I love how salty YoungBerk is about being top of the leaderboard using one exploit. Flamedremon is actually an experienced, knowledgeable RTS player who’s been a top player for many years.

flamedremon will you be playing the other beta? your feedback is so much better then youngberks…actually he doesnt have any constructive feedback just that he is “number 1” using one type of broken unit and exploit over and over lol you would be number 1 if it wasnt for that probably but CA could use all the feedback like yours as possible. i want HW2 to be a game that me and my friend play for years just like i do with HW1 now

My only goal is to make this survive. I want this game to stay ACTIVE years to come. Im not even a big halo wars fan>> But i am a HUGE Console RTS fan… If this game is what will decide if other developers will make rts on console (and believe me other companies ARE watching… this game has a lot riding on its shoulders. More than a lot of people realise) If this game flops there wont be any more rts games on console for a long time. If ever. So please 343 dont let this game die. GIVE IT LIFE. I watched both streams and I have to say both players were good at different things. Berk was very good at manipulating the game from the start and seemed to be online more giving him the most wins which is fine. Flamedremon kept me entertained with his intuitive stratagies beating good players in different ways many times. His micro seemed to be the best out of all the players ied seen. But im sure there are other great players who dont stream that are very good aswell. Cant wait to meet one of these sleepers :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with most of this. The nightengale needs a bit of a patch IMO but this defiantly needs looked at by the Devs!
