Balance in Halo

I’ve noticed a lot of talk recently about how Halo 4 will not be balanced. I seem to remember a time in Halo when balance barely mattered, and fun reigned supreme. Halo 1, the shotgun could fire all the way across the map. I remember testing how far the range was, it was almost the entire span of Blood Gulch! Plus the pistol was insane! Nobody cared though, the multiplayer was still fun. In Halo 2, elites were introduced. No one cared that they were smaller, because you could be an elite, that was awesome! Same with Halo 3. People ended up picking elites just because they looked cool, not because of their hitbox! Reach was less enjoyable because Bungie focused on balance, and not fun. My evidence? Elites, they became a novelty, you only could play as them in Invasion or Elite Slayer. Why was that? Bungie thought balance was more important than fun.

People, balance does not equal fun. Fun is playing infection and having no hope of survival against the zombie hoards, not sitting up high and picking them off with the pistol, surviving for the entire round. Fun is playing as an elite in every mode, not being confined to certain playlists. Halo 4 is going to be fun, I have no doubt. However, I miss the days when we could just have fun and not piss and moan about the sniper being to easy to use, or PV being used like Wall Hacks. So what? Even if PV was over powered, I wouldn’t use it! It wouldn’t be fun to look through the walls and see every enemy. It would be fun to make them attack a hologram, or hide for the entire match in a corner with your whole team packing camo!

I don’t want Halo 4 to have the same fate as Reach. 343, just make it fun, that is what makes a great game. Call of Duty is not fun. I play it, but I don’t enjoy it for the game, I enjoy it for winning. I play Halo to have fun splattering in a mongoose, or seeing if I can hide a whole match in team doubles without being found. Halo has been COD’s competition because it is fun, don’t become like Call of Duty where people only play to get the highest score.

Are you seriously trying to give me the definition of fun? What’s fun for one person may not be fun for another. You by the way proved my point casuals can have fun in a competitve game! There was no complaining about balance because the players that cared (me) were happy and playing.

Here is our idea of fun: Fun is it being a 49-49 stand off on sanctuary where the enemy team has a sniper looking straight down the middle of ring 1. Camo is about to spawn in 10 seconds and only the other team knows it. Then one player gets it sneaks across the map and pulls the most insane back smack to end the game! Fun for me is competition, it coming down to the, the adrenaline rush, and the feeling of success when you beat a skilled opponent.

Fun is relative. What you may find fun may not be what everyone finds fun, some people like balance while others like down right chaos. Which just sparks more arguments as to what is really balanced etc. What needs to happen is a mutual agreement by the community on ideas and interest for Halo 4. But that will never happen humanity is no longer civil enough to be reasonable.

Halo CE was the most balanced title in the series. Bungie just failed at it in every other Halo title.

Who are you to tell me what fun is? I don’t have fun in Infection. Balanced gameplay is the most fun for me.

I’m sorry OP, but in this context, there are loads of definitions of “fun”

> I’m sorry OP, but in this context, there are loads of definitions of “fun”

Ya, I’m just stating my opinion. This is what I think makes Halo one of the top shooters. I was using my definition of fun, sorry all you people who are offended by that.

The SWAT community begs to differ… And the elites in Reach had enormous hit boxes on their head sniping them was soooo easy. They weren’t in many game types because elites were taller faster and had more shield that’s a fact.

Fun is not being constantly bombarded with an annoying ability or “perk.” That’s why fun is often associated with some semblance of balance.

If 343i can pull off balance in all of the loadouts/AAs/specializations then I have hope that it will all work. I feel like, however, that asking a studio making its first game EVER to balance all of that is a very challenging task–that’s the issue.

Why are you going after me so much? I just stated my opinion, I played Swat all the time, and I didn’t care that people were elites. I am using my definition, and many other people’s defintions, of fun. Your definition is having a balanced game and the more skilled team comes out on top. My definition is being able to do weird things (i.e. running people over with a mongoose) and still play the game. You want the game to be balanced, Halo 4 won’t be. I’m assuming that you are the kind of person who is posting complaints about Halo 4. Me, I just hope that I will be able to have a good time in it. That is gaming for me. Not winning, but having “fun”. I can play the game, and I can win, but I would rather get a hologram and trick people with no intention of killing them.

Being as they’ve seen the faults with Reach and the TU they did for it I will be sorely upset with them if they fail to balance the game.

Why are you playing shooters??? New favorite quote
I’m not going after you. Why can’t you realize that you have ruined Halo for me? A long time fan…

Most companies will not try to make the game balanced, because rarely does perfect balance ever seem fun for anyone, they usually go for perfect imbalance. Here:

Chances are the game won’t be perfectly balanced, and that’s okay. It’ll still make for a really fun game because sometimes the balance shifts as the game changes and people learn how to play.

I ruined Halo for you… I play shooters to win. Sure Halo’s a shooter, but the way you kill people is the great part. I can run them over, I can shoot them (obviously), I can do all sorts of weird kills (for example, landing a falcon on them) As I said, many of the matches I play are to kill and win. Sometimes, I just mess around for the whole match. It’s whatever seems fun to me at the time. I have no idea how I ruined Halo for you.

I’m a long time fan to doesn’t really mean anything honestly. Just cause they are adding features like that doesn’t mean the game will indefinitely suck. Simply state what you want in a classic playlist and stop trying to ruin the game for them. Jeez I presume you’re not 4 so quit crying like one.

I will repeat what has been said over and over.

I don’t want to be pushed off to 1 playlist… Put in a corner.

A lot of people in here don’t understand MLGs newest concern is that Halo 4 will be competitive with the mods/abilities taken off but it will be so different from the original game that it won’t attract players to watch.

If casuals can’t relate to the pros then they will never want to learn how to play and thus the MLG community dies even more.

Wow, that was really interesting. Thanks!

The new specializations are like Champions A, B, C, and so on. They should all have strengths and weaknesses that can be countered by another specialization and so on. Chances are that Halo will be adding new armor and specializations now that they have the power to and we’ll see a perfect example of cyclical imbalance.

Lol I watch Starcraft 2 MLG never played the game in my life didn’t understand it but I watched the hell out of it, reaches MLG scene died cause nobody want to watch 8 people using the same guns fighting over better guns and camo. It’s repetitive…

This mentality has turned Halo into a casual game. It is no longer played on the MLG circuit because of people like you who wanted an easier game so we got Reach. Competitive Halo is being killed because most of the player base is casuals who don’t care…

As far as what I have highlighted this goes back to why we need a ranking system then you wouldn’t mess around for a whole match. When I get paired with people like you who “mess around” it hurts me because you either make it to easy to win for my team. Or make it hard on other players to win when your on their team.

Also I can tell your young and have been playing since Reach so I apologize for attacking you. I forget how ignorant some people are of us old timers ways

I don’t believe you have never played the game in your life or you would have no understanding of it. That was Reach MLG because we couldn’t have enough power weapons, power ups and maps. Sorry that all we have is forge world because Bungie -Yoinking!- got amnesia and forgot how to build a map.
