Bad player in need of help! Rant warning : )

Hey guys, so I haven’t had my -Yoink!- kicked on a Halo title like this since I first played Reach multiplayer, anyone got any pointers?

My first big issue is aiming (I use controller on xbox), I’m not trying to start a war between platforms again here so please don’t come after me for this, but my subjective opinion is that aim assist is a lot weaker than previous titles, especially 3 and Reach, apart from maybe the BR.

With that out of the way, my bigger issues with aiming is that I just can’t seem to aim right, I’ve had to slow my sensitivity down to land any shots at all to the point that the only weapons I use are the BR, Commando and AR. As you can imagine, this is very annoying for multiple reasons; One is that I’m restricted to a very small sandbox of weapons so that I don’t pick a power weapon up and cost my teammates their edge in the fight by wasting it (I only take the SPNKR), and two is that if anyone sneaks up on me or jumps down onto me from above, I’m basically dead meat because my turning is very slow.

With that rant out of the way, any help with the aiming or aiming settings would really be appreciated, I tweaked some of them and made the aiming a bit less jank but I’m still awful at landing shots. If someone starts to strafe I’m outta luck lol

Also, bonus question: Should there be a grenade indicator? I only bring it up because I’m getting one tapped by nades I don’t even know are there a lot more than on previous games, I play enough DayZ to know the feeling, thanks lmao

There’s a few suggestions online on what the settings are that could help. Pretty much turn deadzone to 0 or as close as you can without getting drift and then there’s a few others. But I agree and so do many others in that the aim assist is pretty much non-existant or turns off at random times.

I decreased my sensitivity as well, and then regretted it when playing SWAT, but that’s what I get for being lazy and not choosing to change my controls lol.

If I were you, I would just experiment with controller schemes in bot slayer, especially with Spartan bots, and see how it rolls. See what feels smoothest.

There are issues with aiming mechanics and obviously aim assist all together. It’s an issue just about everyone has experienced. Hopefully a fix will launch within the next few weeks.

With that said it took me a long time to figure out how to make the aiming “work” for me. It’s still way off and has issues but I’ve finally found a way to manage it somewhat well. My advice is to load up a bot game in the academy and just spend hours going through different sensitive and dead zone settings. Eventually you’ll find something that works for you and will make it less painful to play until a fix is launched.

Yeah. I’ve already turned down my deadzones after a few quick web searches to find out what has changed with aiming. The good news is that the difference is noticeable, the bad news is that I’m still God awful.

While I’m sure some of it is practice, I do feel like the settings are hamstringing me, I’m not a technical guy so Imma have to go through them and figure out what they all mean.

Thanks for replying : )

Sounds like a plan to me, I’ll hop on the training game mode a bit later and tweak the controls.

Cheers for the reply :+1:

I’m really glad it’s not just me who is experiencing issues, I thought my skill on the controller had just degraded badly! Yeah, it’s really damaging my will to keep playing when I can’t seem to land consistent hits on anyone, the sidekick is a massive gamble for me, probably a 40% chance I will land my shots.

I’ll hit up the bot training in a bit and test it out! I think I knew something was off when I started to get blasted by random noobs who just got the game. I know how the mechanics and the sandbox works, I just have trouble getting it to work for me

Thanks for the reply!

Ultimately you will need to mess with your deadzone and sensitivities in training mode and adjust as necessary. I wouldn’t mess with acceleration curve or much else. If you’re on controller play into aim assist more as it’ll help you stay on target for fine aiming. Also break the habit of aiming for the head only if you do that. Focus on landing most of your shots on the body then aim for the head when the shields fall.

Trust me I was just as frustrated but I hunkered down and grit my teeth and now I’ve gotten way better at using the pistol.

Yeah, I’ve just found a video that apparently explains all thumbstick settings available in Infinite. Hopefully that will help, as getting destroyed in gank attacks because I can’t turn around is getting old quickly!

And yeah, you’re pretty much spot on with the aiming for the head, naturally that’s what I do, years of playing Halo 3 and Reach multiplayer, as well as BO3 Hardcore has ingrained headshots within me lol

Cheers for the reply

I started a thread to help with this titled:

Need help aiming in Infinite? (if it feels off to you try this set up for controllers)

Go look there as it should be really helpful. Just copy the link without the “” and you should get there.

I go over a lot of the controller set up to make it feel more like older Halos because the default settings are terrible.

Cheers man, that FOV tip really helped me out! I actually found that turning up axial deadlzone from 0 to around 2 helped with tracking enemies as well.

Thanks for the reply and tip!

I would try the weapons academy. It’s actually pretty legit for getting a handle on the aiming and weapon characteristics. And if you try to get 2-3 stars for each weapon drill, you can hone in a pretty solid foundation for playing online.

Yeah I did a couple of those, they’re not bad for practicing. Actually the pulse rifle drill was really helpful in figuring out how to use the weapon! I used to think it was just trash but I get how you’re meant to use it now.

Firstly, you’re correct, there is a lot less aim assist in infinite.

I can give you some tips, do not mess with acceleration and max input threshold (They are like a Pandora’s box, making things more complicated), only sensitivity and deadzones should be changed
Use a mid-low sensitivity or default
Stick with the same settings for a while after you change them, don’t change settings every 20-30 minutes or else you won’t get used to them.
Practice a lot in Bootcamp against spartan bots

halo 3 is way harder t o aim especially with br and sniper

Yeah I tweaked a bunch of settings. I actually did change acceleration to max to get the smallest noticeable look acceleration, it always throws my aim off.

I also bumped down the deadzones like you and others have said and it has definitely helped, although I found that having my axial deadzones set to zero caused me to miss when going for headshots and fail to track other players, so I set that to 2.5.

Thanks for the reply :+1:

Really? I guess it can be hard sometimes

I dunno man, I guess I did play the classic games and Reach for the better part of a decade, so maybe I just got used to it? But I honestly found the BR to be relatively easy to become skilled at, same with the DMR in Reach.

Snipers will always be tricky, I agree the sniper is quite hard to use in Halo 3. On the other hand the Beam Rifle is pretty easy to get kills with. I’m finding the sniper in Infinite to be a lot harder to use than previous titles, rewarding though. Just my opinion.

Thanks for replying mate

It’s all good mate, I think I’ve tweaked my settings pretty well, not sure if I’m gonna change them again.

Ranked sounds crazy dude, hope it’s going well for you. When my mates can get on I expect we’ll run a squad of four and try our hands at it!

Cheers for the reply dude

This game is a lot different from previous titles but what’s helped me: look up pro player settings, find one and adjust from there…this uncludes under the UI setting changing weapon offsets so the gun itself sits further down and out of your screen…secondly, play fiesta and just play the game a lot in general…there’s a big skill gap in this game and I actually like that part but the more you play and use different weapons, the better you’ll get…stay humble and take those lickings…you’ll get better from it. Good luck!
