Back in my day..

Man, who remembers the good ole days? Back when Call of duty wasn’t that big, when the only big multiplayer game in xbox was halo 3? Man those were that days. I remember playing Lone Wolf all the time and trying to rank up as high as I can but everyone would play forage with there frieds and it was all good fun. But those days are gone and honestly… I don’t see them ever returning…

Halo was once a trend setter before becoming a trend follower in 2010. The series no longer leads the industry which is why, unless 343i do some serious reevaluation with Halo: Infinite, the franchise will only continue to become less and less popular.

I mean, I remember tons of people playing Halo 3 for sure, as it was a huge game, but that doesn’t mean Call of Duty wasn’t big either. Keep in mind, Call of Duty 4 came out the exact same year as Halo 3 did, and was pretty groundbreaking at the time. I’d go as far as to say that was the game that sent that franchise skyrocketing.

Of course, I remember! The 2 big titles at the time were Halo 3 and CoD4. Back when life was much simpler. Every game of Halo played was enjoyable and made a lot of friends that I would’ve never had the opportunity to meet otherwise. I still talk to the guys I played with, but nothing beats the actual time frame of “the good ole days”.

I’ve been playing since the launch of Halo CE. I remember those days. I remember further back when, truly, the only reason people had an Xbox was to play Halo 2. No other game came close to touching Halo. Everything and everyone else was competing for the #2 spot. Halo 3 was the peak of player hype and after that, the competition started to come in. Call of Duty and Gears of War being the two big ones that really started to compete with Halo

I totally believe that statement.

Yea, but halo was special. Cod4 was basically multiplayer. And the community was toxic asf.

Man I wish I still knew my old halo buddies…

Man, imagine if they did the series like half life but stopped at 3

Call of Duty 4 did far more than just revolutionise multiplayer.

Campaign:

  • First blockbuster, ‘movie’ like campaign, with shocking moments like the nuke in ‘Shock and Awe’
  • Scripted sequences to help the above
  • Great pacing to stop gameplay becoming a chore (All Ghillied up, AC-130 missions)
  • Popularised the ‘Modern Warfare’ market after the decline of WW2 shooters

Gameplay:

  • Low ttk helps make the game more accessible to casual gamers and less skill based compared to Halo
  • Easy to understand weapons whereas Halo has a pretty refined meta
  • Popularised ‘ADS’ and ‘Sprint’

Multiplayer:

  • Introduced the ‘Create a Class’ system
  • Introduced ‘Perks’ for customisation options
  • Popularised the ‘XP’ rank progression system
  • Introduced Killstreaks, ‘rewarding’ gamers

That’s just a short list off the top of my head. Halo 3 was evolutionary and not revolutionary unlike Halo CE and Halo 2. That’s not to say Halo 3 was a bad game, no, it was fantastic. The issue is that whereas before all the casuals would still be on Halo, they now had a new game to enjoy that also had the advantage of being multiplatform and accessible to a much larger audience. The end result is that Halo 3 remained the most popular Xbox exclusive but lost its dominance to the more casual friendly and revolutionary COD 4. Like Halo, COD 4’s influence can still be observed in a large number of FPS games to this day.

It’s sad that Halo lost its dominance but it happens to everything. Recent examples include Battlefield rising to challenge COD though not quite beating it, PUBG popularising the Battle Royale genre but failing to capitalise on it, allowing Fortnite to become the larger game. Even now, PUBG and Fortnite’s influence can be seen in both Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and Battlefield V.

Don’t get me wrong, Halo 3 is still a fantastic game and sequel to Halo 2 but ask yourself, what did it do that was groundbreaking? Halo CE popularised the 2 weapon system, regenerating health and nades and melee being assigned to a single button, Halo 2 popularised console online multiplayer and set the standard, Halo 3 I can’t really say it did anything new, rather, it did what it had done before but it did it well. Halo 3 brought online co-op and equipment, theatre and forge but of these, only theatre proved to be imitated by other franchises, though, ultimately it seems that it has not had the same impact as the previous Halo’s did. Forge remains a fan favourite but it has not influenced the market either.

Credit has to be given where credit is due in my opinion. I would love for Halo 3 to have remained the dominant game (believe me, my friends and I continued playing Halo 3 but overtime, my friends started to prefer CoD) but sadly, nothing lasts forever.

That’s not funny. That would be super frustrating

‘Epistle 3’ released by Laidlaw is still super painful and sad to read. We’ve been waiting far too long for Episode 3/Half Life 3, I don’t want to think about what it would be like if we had to add Halo 3 to that list.

Agreed. It’d kill the series and destroy the community. I’m glad Halo is still going strong and is active across the board

I miss the days when everytime I would turn on my Xbox, everyone was always playing either Halo 3 or Reach. Now, it’s rare for any of my friends to get on the MCC and I haven’t seen a single one play Halo 5 yet. Kinda sad.

And Gears was an Xbox exclusive, just like Halo. Microsoft really had their hands on the FPS market.

Yes and they still do, to an extent. The Gears of War series is still a heavy hitter and a fan favorite right now

And correct me if im wrong, but Xbox got DLC before Playstation players back in the day for COD right?

No, everyone got the DLC on the same day. That whole “Playstation users get it first” deal didn’t start until a few years ago.

Back on topic though. One thing that DID happen was the Halo 2 DLC Maps were slowly released, via Xbox Live, before they were all released on a retail disk

Great game and great times playing countless hours
