Auto Sentry Blockade Tactic.

I find incomparison to other AA options the auto sentry is not too handy as it doesn’t cut it and is often overlooked by players in favour of more persona; devices such as Active Camo, Thruster Pack, Promethean Vision, Hologram, Jetpack and Hardlight Shield.

I know regenation field covers both team play and personal so hey, it’s different.

I recently played a game of team slayer and the enemy was all using holograms which confused the hell out of me and my team, we didn’t know what we were shooting at,was out targets fake or real?

it clicked then, why not have a team using Auto-Sentry’s?,

Its roughly a 6 to 8 shots to kill if memory serves in roughly 5 seconds which is a long time, but having 2 or 3 or 4 sentry’s it would make short work of ememy players; ontop of the firepower you yourself as the player could provide.

This of coarse is assuming you have friends who agree to do it with you, but think of it, since no one uses sentry’s it will be the last thing people expect.

Think of it like this, if a whole team uses Active Camo, Thruster Pack, Promethean Vision, Jetpack, regeneation and Hardlight Shield.

It doesn’t help the team.

They catch onto the fact your using thruster and jetpacks, they will chase you, using camo?, promethean vision you, regen?, target people outside the green bubble, Hardlight?, Flankyou, Pro-Vision?, still kill you,

yet the Auto-sentry you could spam damage, you could lock down entire corridors on maps, it would change dominion and CTF radically. Spawn, drop a sentry with the other 2 or 3 floating there, they could deal with 1 or 2 attackers. proceed towards the objective without fear of losing yours.

Hell, use it agressively, run in with 3 guys to take a base on Domination, drop 3 sentries, 2 guard, 1 captures, then wait it out as the enemy panic at losing a base, 3 sentries and 3 playes will survive, it’s essentially 6 guns.

Whats your thought of the Sentry?

Auto Sentry is the only armor ability I have used since unlocking it shortly after launch.

I have seen it a few times in matchmaking. If you are actually in a party and playing together, then I can see it dominating in certain situations.

I only takes 3 shots to kill, they go down FAST. Since most people don’t play in teams…

It’s actually BEAST in campaign. Tears everything apart (knights, watchers, laser turrets), even on legendary. Master Chief gets all his AA’s buffed. Lucky. Not to mention it saves quite a bit of ammo. It pretty much makes up for the lack of plasma pistol on some levels.

And back to matchmaking… nah, it’s not doin’ it. Jetpack/hologram are just convenient. Camo is cheap and boring.

Im not a big fan of it actually ive never used it but that sounds interesting.

Auto Sentry kicks -Yoink- in the campaign as well as Spartan Ops, can never see me swapping out the Thruster Pack for anything else in Matchmaking though.

I don’t use it, but I’ve played teams who have done what you are suggesting. I’ve played teams were 2-3 of the the opposing team layed out AS and it made it very difficult to get the ball they were holding.

As you summarized, it’s great when used with teams, especially if there is a sum of them.

I use it exclusively, except in Forerunner-prominent Spartan Ops chapters, where I need the Knights to respawn.

In one oddball game me and my friends, had all five of us using it. We got the odd ball then camped back on adrift. Now with one guy holding the ball. Four shooter’s, and five Auto sentries. Your team can’t really be touched.

I have come across people using it in team regicide to protect the king, good tactic really.

I like auto turret and I used it for a long time in mm but its way more useful in campaign or spartan ops .

I have a loadout dedicated to it. If you set it up when you know someone is about to come, if it’s 1 on 1 you will win almost everytime.

Shhh… You’re letting everyone know how to use the Autosentry.

LOL. But I LOVE the Autosentry. It’s my favorite AA in Halo 4. Very useful in many situations.

You just need to know how to use it.

I wonder what it would be like to go against an ENTIRE team using the same AA…

AN ENTIRE SPARTAN CAMO TEAM? What a nightmare that game would be

Auto Sentry is handy for helping to defend the flag, but I can’t think of what else it is good for.

Most of times when I play Spartan Ops solo I use Auto Sentry. Always handy to have extra fire power to corner an enemy Brothers in Arms style.

I get my team to use it in CTF. Once we get a lead, 5 auto-sentries pop out and make it one hell of a defended flag. In most cases it’s nearly impossible to really beat it.

Correct me if I’m wrong (I might be, since I don’t use autosentries too much outside of Spartan Ops/Campaign), but the counter to a whole team using autosentries would be a few members of the opposing team using holograms. If the opposing team spams just even a few holograms, the autosentries will fire at the closest target (even if it’s just one hologram), which will drain their time and have them go into cooldown much sooner.

Holograms recharge much faster than autosentries if I remember correctly, which might pose a problem because then not all of the opposing team’s party needs to have a hologram equipped, and most of the time teams in matchmaking aren’t organized or communicating with each other. Autosentries could be at a disadvantage even with communication.

I love my autosentry! It’s a really useful little tool. Usually not enough to swing the battle in your favour, but it can give you a definite advantage. It opens up new tactics. Here are my Autosentry tips:

  • Don’t forget to use the little bugger! Throw it out early BEFORE you make contact with the enemy.

  • It has poor health and explodes when you die. Don’t even think about using a sentry as a “last gasp” tactic. Save yourself, live to fight another day.

  • It has a limited range of fire and the projectiles aren’t the fastest-travelling.

  • Use #1: giving yourself a wingman. I like to throw down a Sentry on the top level of Haven or in the corridors in Adrift before I start advancing. If I come across an enemy I have a bit of covering fire (in case I have to duck into cover, or reload) and the enemy is immediately choosing between two targets. Even if one of those targets is more of a nuisance than a threat, don’t underestimate the psychological edge that can give you! The very fact that the sentry is so weak will often tempt an undisciplined enemy to take it out first to make killing you easier.

  • Use #2: Related, providing a distraction. Throw down a sentry at the end of a corridor (perhaps deliberately facing the wrong way to encourage enemies to advance), and you camp around the doorway. The enemy runs up to melee the “poorly placed” sentry, you jump out and perform a beatdown. Ha! Ha!

  • Use #3: Setting up a crossfire. Adrift is a great place to use this. Set up a sentry on one of the corners (near the sticky/scattershot spawns) and then use the mancannon to jump to the other end. An enemy in the corridor is now getting shot from both sides.

  • Use #4: Defence. Throw down a sentry to cover a stationary objective (like your flag) or your King or Oddball carrier if he’s found a good camping spot. The more teammates using Sentry, the more effective this is!

  • Use #5: Aggressive defence. Throw down sentries to slow an enemy push, for example in the high vents in Adrift to slow down enemies chasing your flag carrier. You should already be using grenades and sticky launchers for this same purpose, but sentries work well too!

  • Use #6: An early-warning system. This is great when you’re defending a base or flag, or if you’re turtling down as the King in Regicide. A sentry can effectively “spot” enemies for you, and gives sound and visual cues when it’s spotted something. Use autosentries, never get flanked or surprised again.

  • Use #7: Actually killing stuff! Sometimes if I’m not sure where the action is, I just throw down the damn sentry in a strategic spot (covering a bottleneck, or the end of a corridor, or by a weapon spawn) and go on my merry way. Nine times out of ten this doesn’t affect the game at all. But occasionally you’ll get a random kill awarded to you, when some unshielded guy wanders into your sentries sights. Priceless!

Summary: The autosentry is underused but it’s a great little tool. A team with several autosentry users could make their opponent’s lives very difficult indeed if they coordinated sentry use (setting up AI firing squads, or covering all approached to their flag, etc), but even a single sentry user can use it effectively. Good luck and may your little robotic friend do you proud!

The strength of the auto-sentry is only realized when you have a team working with it. You need at least 2 people.

It also seems to shine in close quarter maps where you don’t see the sentries until they’re right in your face.

You mean this hasn’t already happened to you? Wow, you must be lucky… Seems like my last 10 games have been full of nothing but AC/Boltshot ho’s…
