Audio/Visual Wishlist

So I’ve seen all of the gameplay for Halo 5: Guardians. I’m excited. It looks like a good move forward in the Halo universe.

I have loved every single Halo game to come out including ODST, Wars, and 4. But starting with 4 I became dissatisfied with some of the audio. The sniper rifle in Halo 4 sounded like two pieces of metal being hit together-not like a sniper rifle. Halo: Reach’s sniper audio was phenomenal. It was a deep, boomy sound. On Hemorrhage, that thing echoed throughout the entire map.

With what I’ve seen of Halo 5, the gun audio doesn’t sound the best. The sniper rifle isn’t as bad as Halo 4, but it’s not the best. It sounds like there’s no power to it. That’s my main point. MAKE THE WEAPONS SOUND POWERFUL. Making it look and feel good isn’t all that there is to it. It needs to sound good, and powerful. It’s defined as a power weapon, but it lacks the power-audio.

I’m in no way hating on Halo 5. I’m excited. But I’m sick of weak-sounding weapons. Give the audio the extra “oomph” it needs.

On a side note, I also dislike the way the sniper bullets look when they leave the gun. It’s a slow, yellow-ish bullet. It looks disgusting. This is where you guys at 343 had it right in Halo 4. The visuals on the sniper bullets were awesome. It had a cloudy/smokey look, and it gave it a further sense of power.

I love video games an incredible amount, but the audio is a major part to me being an audio technology student. I also have faith for Halo and I trust 343.
PLEASE NOTE: Only comment on audio/visual changes that should be made and/or things that don’t involve core gameplay mechanics!

I agree that they should focus more on the sound effects. They’re always going on about wanting to make you feel like a Spartan - If you want to feel like a Spartan, you need to sound like a Spartan. There needs to be more than just a boring, comical crunch or splat sound effect when you melee.

The sniper sounded the best out of all the guns in the Beta. I think it sounds pretty fine
But yeah, the sniper bullet is kind of wonky when it is shot.

Remember this is happening 500 years in the future. A lot has changed, they’ve muffled the sound of guns, and made them more powerful than 21st Century weapons.

I wish they would just change some of the weapon and vehicle aesthetics, especially the Fuel Rod Gun and Banshee. Those Reach models have been recycled over and over again for CEA, Halo 4, and now Halo 2A (except for campaign) and they’re getting really old. They could either change those models to something new, or revert them back to the way they looked in the first three games, but they need to change it either way, because they don’t represent the covenant’s aesthetic style very well at all. (more smooth and organic, less gritty and jagged). Leave the gritty/jagged style for the aesthetics of the forerunners, or the brutes if they ever return.

That is an excellent point. It is in the future and a lot has changed. But in the ViDocs they talk about wanted to make the player feel like a spartan. I should be able to feel like I’m shooting a sniper rifle too!

visuals : 90+ degree FOV

Audio : a lot less of that high pitched chirp/beep/hiss like noises that come from shields, moving around, switching weapons, scoping in. There is a lot of annoying high pitched sounds that bother me.

Those are my two wishes.

I was looking through some of the new Spartan armour in Halo 5, and came across this.

Don’t get me wrong, the armour itself looks much better than Halo 4’s, but the colour scheme is a little too…
…Yeah. It makes the armour set feel so gaunt and feeble.

Then look at this beautiful masterpiece. Seriously, PLEASE base the colour scheme off of this darker tone. At least it makes you look like an actual Spartan, not some bulky power ranger. Maybe they could add some light scratches and plasma burns onto the armour, too.

I’d like the distanced gunfights to sound like they do in Battlefield. It creates a great atmosphere, especially in BTB.

When a Spartan is running and reaches terminal velocity, they’re thruster pack starts to go off. I’m really not enjoying how it looks… It looks kind of cheesy, and almost cartoon-ish.

Completely agree. There Spartans for christ sake, they should be able to sprint with out the need of some sonic style boosters. I wish they’d use the halo 2 anniversary sound for the sniper though, that thing sounds beast.

That thing sounds like a beast! 343 should absolutely use H2A’s sniper audio.

I think we can all agree that all sounds apart from the sniper are ok, and the beeping noices should be kept only for the multiplayer, as it is a simulation, but if they put it in campaing i will rage.
sniper should return to h2 anniversary sound, and as for the thrusters when at terminal speed it is ok as they need to carry a 2 ton armor everywhere, it is heavier than a car for -Yoinks!- sake

also, i agree with the spartan colors returning to that shiny style they have as a base texture, for two reasons:

  • it makes more sense, they are in a simulation not a real fight so why would the armours be scratched…- they look a lot better

Black undersuits. Or at least a customization option for it.
