Attrition - my main issue in terms of the revival mechanic

I think the main idea behind attrition is fine - but it has some flaws in my eyes.

I don’t know how everyone sees this, but I think that the purpose of a gamemode is to make something special out of it. If you’re playing CTF, your main goal is supposed to capture the flag, if you’re playing Oddball, your goal is to hold the ball as long as you can, if you’re playing KOTH your main goal is to hold out in the hill.

Right now, Attrition doesn’t stand out to me as a unique gamemode (unlike extermination) as it potentially could and should - but with a few tweaks this could turn out to one of the most exciting gamemodes to play. (I mean they are not a lot in the game to begin with…but you get what I mean)

The core aspect of Attrition is / should be Teamwork & the reviving feature.
In my opinion, there should be ways to put way more emphasis on the revival feature.

I don’t know if you’re familiar with “Extermination” from H5, but it’s probably one of the most intense gamemodes in Halo and it shares a few of the functions with attrition.

My suggestion would be to combine the best of 2 worlds:

  • 3-5 rounds

  • No respawns

  • Revival works by tapping RB one time (reviving should be a bit faster) and you have to stick around (works like returning your flag, the only difference is that you have to tap RB one time)

  • This way, the reviving feature is becoming the core aspect of the gamemode, the rounds are way more intense + the gameplay doesn’t get interrupted.

It’s very easy to “camp” next to the death players at the end of a round when you know that the goal of the enemy player is to revive his teammate. Especially in a game like Halo – the maps are small & the revival function takes a bit too long for the purpose of this gamemode.

Right now, it just feels like slayer with 8 lifes and reviving just feels like an afterthought. The revival feature doesn’t get to shine. I think I’ve played about 10 rounds and there were barely any people reviving other players in the first place.

What do you think? Is it perfect right as it is right now? Are there other suggestion for improving this gamemode?

I honestly think there is more potenrial out there for attrition.

I played Elimination-type modes in Halo 2 or Halo 3, by the way, so isn’t anything new.

Anyway, I wouldn’t mind the revival speed being changed, but I get why they made is slower. Maybe they were trying to copy other not-so-similar games where that slower revival works.

You make a good point that it feels like it’s just 8 team lives, which is true mostly.
One point I would make is that they wanted the mode to have a “comeback” feeling, which would not be there by removing the respawning. I kind of like how it has respawning, cause elimination-type modes never have been successful in Halo when it’s 1 life and you’re dead.

Though, I wouldn’t have a problem with any of your ideas. However, I do think having fast revival could be more annoying than not… potentially
