So, we’ve all suspected that ATN will be the final DLC for HW 2 and thus begin the population decline… But I think we just got confirmation. Nakamura (HW 2 streamer and developer) tweeted not long ago that he isn’t going to be working on HW 2 anymore and is moving onto a different game. This most likely means that ATN is the last DLC we’ll be seeing. It’s sad, but it’s not like we could get infinite DLC.

While this is sad I think we shouldn’t be too surprised. Rather, I think we should be some what surprised at how much content a console RTS has gotten.
The fact that this game even exists is huge - console RTS are extremely niche and frankly just don’t make too much financial or business sense for Devs. However, we got a pretty darn good console RTS in HW2 as well as a TON of content in its first 7 months of life - lots of games do not get the frequency of content this game got - which certainly something to be thankful for.
Sure it hasn’t been perfect and a bit of a rough road balance wise BUT I for one am quite glad we did get what we got.
As far as content goes I bet we still will get some balance updates for a while yet but no more content. I am sure the entire 343 team is now completely devoted for the next major Halo game which is exciting and we might finally hear about it at coming events in 2018.
While the populace will go down, HW2 will have a very faithful active group of RTS lovers and I will be one of them. HW1 made it a full 6 years and I am sure this game will go quite long too.
Maybe we will get a HW3, maybe not. But either way I look forward to how (from a story stand point) our heroes from HW2 impact H6.
EDIT: It appears Naka is heading to work on Total War (he works for CA?) But either way if he is now wrapping up HW2 I would assume 343 is no longer pouring a lot of time into it.

Yes good points here. However, Xbox 360 has had some outstanding RTS console games. In other words it surprises me with the advances in technology and development that more consoles are not at least giving them a shot. Some of my favorite RTS games from 360 were Halo wars 1, Supreme Commander 2(probably my favorite) Command and Conquer, Battle for middle earth. Please future developers make more RTS console games lol There is a fan base big enough out there.

I def think the capability is there and I hope we see more for sure. I just am not convinced we will see more when that same power can bring really excellent and massive FPS games

Halo Wars 1 and Supreme Commander 2 on the Xbox 360 were great fun and got me into the RTS genre.
I don’t think we’ll see many more RTS games on console unfortunately, there’s not many new ones on PC even. The developers for Supreme Commander, Battle For Middle Earth and Command and Conquer are all shut down.

At least I hope ATN gives a proper closure to the story, I knew there would be missions after the main campaing because the ending didn’t actually felt like an ending.

Seems pretty short lived indeed. Especially with all the balancing issues keeping people from playing the game. Seems like as soon as they get it nearly balanced I wouldn’t doubt they all jump ship

Yeah I could go on a rant about how the last few years of technological advancement hasn’t been so good for niche-genre’s (RTS, Space Fighter Sims, City Builders, etc.) in the last few years. It seems as technology has advanced the cost to develop a AAA title has increased exponentially. The reason we get so many cookie cutter games now is because developers don’t want to publish an expensive AAA game only to watch it fail miserably due to trying to be “unique.” and different from what is known to succeed on the market… For all its problems, Halo Wars 2 was a triumph in the sense we got to see an RTS on console again with such a wide variety of content.
To be honest though, I kind of miss the late 90’s and early 2000’s in gaming these days. When poor graphics meant developers had to get creative in how they made games. You couldn’t release a game with a new coat of paint over and over again like some developers do now (C.O.D…); they had to be unique back then. Even the Doom clones of the 90’s had a lot more ingenuity to them than a lot of the new games we are getting now.

Og halo 1 graphics are hard to look at,but back then I was amazed
I think that HW2 made more money than people are giving it credit for. I have no fact to base that off of. I think if Halo 6 is good and sells well, there is real chance of getting a HW3 because a large portion of the HW2 community is crazy loyal to it and they will be more likely to take a risk if it looks like the halo franchise is on an upswing. I want to stand by my theory that HW2 was the extended beta for HW3.
