At this point, can we safely assume 343 will monetize forge?

I don’t think we’ve heard anything, and I know at least on the forums, the monetization of forge has been a huge concern among players.

At this point, I would have guess that either A: the devs have never seen this concern (in which case, why do the forums exist?) or B: They have seen this concern and chosen not to address it.

If they KNEW they weren’t going to monetize it, they would surely state that it is a free update, right?

Does anyone have any info or perspective that I don’t?

At this point, we can safely assume they will not monetise forge.

I try to actively avoid making assumptions.

you never know they might make a community monetization system for people who make games then 343 get a cut

I can only see a monetization of Forge with part packs. Textures, pieces, and the basic geometry would be buyable, like say Classic Covenant set with Halo 2A/3 style to remake Midship or Assembly. Forerunner is already classic in design and available, New Mombasa set thats heavily based on ODST would be desired, however what I’ve seen we have something close in Forge.

I doubt any new additions other than weapons and vehicles would be free in updates. Even if a pack is like $9.99 USD it depends what’s in it. Just a more logical approach to the idea.

This is already making horrible assumptions. The update would still be free, but certain aspects of Forge wouldn’t be, so no the assumption you are making here doesn’t really make sense.

There have been times where the community of a certain game or movie or what have you make wild and crazy assumptions about a game, it ends up being wrong and the developers don’t do anything about it beforehand.

Its an unsubstantiated rumor with next to no reason to believe is going on. This would be like me saying they’ll charge customers per update (something never done before in all of gaming to my knowledge) and then me turning around and saying “343i are not saying anything about it, so it must be true” uh no they are not required to deny every single rumor or make believe idea that the community brings up.

The reason monetizing Forge would be stupid is because it would A) do nothing but badwill amongst the community B) probably not make too much money and C) it would just make no sense because things like customs browser or putting Forge maps into matchmaking would just be silly. I cannot imagine them wasting their time on a map maker tool just to put it out and only like 1-2% of the playerbase to access and use it, it just sounds like an extremely stupid idea way outside of Halo. This would be like them monetizing Theater mode, like the profit margins would be almost nonexistent and there’s no real reason why it would be a good business decision.

Forge will be free dude, if not expect tons of 343i/MS heads to roll. No chance the PR disaster that this would bring would be even remotely worth the 1-2 million dollars that monetizing it would.

they quite literally said it would ship for all players on the f2p version of halo infinite during the live stream

Honestly, I hope they won’t since I do believe they stated that maps that are well made by forge players might make it into the game as official maps. IF they monetize it, a lot of people probably won’t even touch forge.

They do it well enough, we may get loads of new maps to play

I do hope they reward people who make maps that get picked by 343i to be official too.

they could make the custom games themselves monetized and creators get paid a cut

It seems very unlikely. They haven’t hinted at any part of it being paid for and they’ve explicitly mentioned that it’s a feature in the F2P portion of the game.

still could come as a future update

Think they said it will be a free beta for all. Thats good news, but yeah, probably monetized later

Unless they feel like squeezing the trigger of the gun that’s already aimed at Halo’s head they wouldn’t dare charge money for Forge.

yet they fail attempted to raise prices back up early on in s2 with a 900 point helmet and 1.8k trash looking armor set

  1. Its likely next to impossible to monetize effectively. In order for someone that didn’t have it they’d have to download it anyway in order to play on the maps/modes that people create, thus its fair to say that you could relatively easily just use mods/glitches to circumvent it and use the Forge mode for regardless.
  2. The revenue would be paper thin. How many people would actually pay money for a Forge mode? I imagine 10k would be the highest estimate, and they definitely aren’t going to charge 30 bucks for it, I’d imagine it would be like $5-10 at most, so your talking like 50k-100k profit off of something that almost assuredly already cost that amount to begin with, then you consider how it would negatively impact 343i/MS from a PR perspective and it becomes obvious why it wouldn’t be an effective or useful monetization strategy.
  3. There are far better options. Warzone 2.0, assassinations, DLC, heck even a standalone PvE mode would likely be more profitable and expansive than Forge would be.
  4. It is counterproductive to the mode. What is the point of any map maker/mod tool? To give users freedom to make new maps and generate their own content right? So reducing this number to say a fraction of what it would be otherwise is just an insanely stupid move. Forge arguably pays for itself more times over just based on how many maps end up in Matchmaking and how many custom games are enabled due to it, so the logic of monetization is actually pretty damn stupid even from a pure business perspective. Forge has arguably been backpacking Halo since Halo 3 days but especially since Reach, I give it like a 1% chance they’d monetize it and that’s only possible if its a specific upper management person that is the one making all the decisions.

It was already stated that Forge WILL NOT be monetized.

At this stage we can safely assume 343 haters are either running out of things to troll about (which is weird given the problems we already have) and/or are terrified that Forge actually looks good enough to save the game.

I’ve seen the posts people made, but was it really a huge concern? I was just poking fun at the notion since this game is monetized to heck and back, but I’m not convinced they’d actually do it. It would actually kill the game imo if they did.

If 343 isn’t willing to address these concerns, I’d bet it’s simply because they think it’s ridiculous to assume such a thing.

They did say it was gonna part of the F2P portion of the game, but future updates may not apply.

It wouldn’t kill them to put people’s minds at ease though…

Just my thoughts.

The only thing 343 has monetized is player customization, and the challenge system (which is used to unlock said customization stuff).
