Assault scoring needs to be revisted

I don’t think the Assualt gametype is ready for the big leagues.
As it stands, it’s much easier to keep an opponent from scoring than it is to score. This is because resets are immediate. The current setup leads to way too many low scoring games and/or stalemates.

I think any of these 3 following approaches would make the game play better immediately.
Let’s look at it from the POV of red team attempting to plant the bomb in blue base

  1. red teams progress will only reset if blue team gets the bomb into Red’s base
  2. red teams progress will only reset if blue team successfully plants the bomb in red’s base
  3. progress never resets

Too often, the game goes back to square one. Any of these options will keep the game moving forward because the only way to finish defending a base is to successfully attack the opponents base. By changing how progress is reset, attacking has a better chance at being successful.

I am not expert on Assault and will say I think it the least attractive game mode when playing team Arena as scoring is very difficult but I remind myself the other team is having the same issue hopefully.

I was sure if the ball is dropped inside your base if another Spartan from your team picks it up the count down starts from where it was dropped and not reset.

Maybe if it’s removed from the scoring area it might reset?

I think what 343 was going for with assault is that it is not at all easy to get a plant and you cam only really arm if you have 3 or 4 dead. Also H5 assault is much easier to arm in than previous games like H2a.

You are correct. It’s not an immediate reset. You have to actually clear the ball from the scoring area. (Not sure on exact distance, but it’s more than just outside the scoring zone.)

I’d be interested to try the OP’s suggest for the sake of the lols in a custom game, but as it stands, I actually think the current system is pretty cool. It is messy, but I’d put that down to the prevelance of autos near bases. I wanna guess that the trend is moving towards more scoring since the recent updates.

assault works fine when you treat its rules properly.
make the enemy team have a lower teamsize due to deaths (2 or 1), go plant.
while planting predict where the other 2 players are and where their mates will be spawning
kill them again (spawn kill)
bomb detonated
points!

The arming timer will deplete if the ball carrier is not within the circle. The arming timer will reset if the enemy picks up the ball ( unless these were changed in the new summer preview). You have to clear the enemy out before arming the bomb/ball to ensure a successful score, and your team mates need to be able to react accordingly. Assault requires a high amount of coordination` and I think it would benefit the Halo community in general to see how pro’s play it.
