Howdy, I need help with the AR. I suck at it, never use it. Would like to but I seem to be too slow and old. Loadouts and suggestions plz.
Burst fire it man, I guarantee you will come out ontop of someone who if leaving the fire button pressed, But if you are melee range spray that all over
Mobilty perk plus the AR may help you
Pulse the trigger, 1.5 second hold, .5 seconds off.
The Halo 4 assault rifle is pretty good compared to other games, but the maps are also bigger too.
Early on I used the assault rifle a lot and landed a ton of kills with it, lately though I just have been playing terrible in general, bit in my experience the maps are open enough to leave the assault rifle about as effect as previous Halo games if you don’t play right.
-Never engage in a firefight where there are more enemies than friendlies. With precision weapons, you’ll atleast get one kill then die. With the AR, you just die.
-Never engage a player using a precision weapon at mid or (obviously) long range. The AR may be described as being a “close to mid-range weapon”, but it gets EATEN UP at mid range by everything.
-Don’t burst fire in a duel, only when the enemy is slightly out of range and isn’t paying too much attention.
-Stick to close range! If you are getting shot at mid-long range, just run away. There is nothing you can do.
-Pulse grenades, Jetpack, and Dexterity all compliment the AR well
The best way to use an Assault Rifle (or any Automatic), is to carry it as a Secondary Weapon using the perks Firepower, and Dexterity.
Dexterity will allow you to switch between your Precision primary, and Automatic secondary quickly, so you have the right one out when you need it. As well, it helps you deal with the generally short Magazine on Automatic weapons, to take on multiple opponents. (Dexterity also greatly buffs the Carbine, because of it’s short clip).
I would recommend the following combinations of Primary/Secondary weapons:
Pair the Assault Rifle with the LR and DMR
Pair the Storm Rifle with the DMR and BR
Pair the Suppressor with the BR and Carbine
These pairings are based on range advantage. The LR and DMR have the most range, but are less flexible in mid/close ranged combat (well, the LR at least, DMR needs a nerf), so carrying the most range flexible Automatic with them is the best idea, to give you a wider range of effectiveness.
The BR and Carbine have the least range, but have great dominance at mid-close ranges, so carrying the most dominant point blank Automatic is best with them. It basically balances out power vs flexibility.
For Grenades, I suggest either Plasma or Pulse. Plasma is just really good all around, but Pulse is really great for just stripping an opponent’s health in an instant. Or multiple opponents’
For Armour Ability, the Jetpack is always a good choice, it’s pretty overpowered. Active Camo can help you stay out of long ranged combat, and lure enemies in close, the Hologram is a great way to surprise your enemy with a hail of bullets. And even the Sentry Turret’s extra damage can help you melt an opponent faster.
When you get Ordinance Drops, Speed Boost, and Damage Boost are amazing with Automatics, Speed Boost helps you both avoid precision fire, while closing distance quickly, Damage Boost get’s a greatest benefit the faster a weapon fires bullets. And if you plain love Automatics, SAWs and Needlers are great choices to replace your AR with.
Good stuff.
A good loadout if your looking to use the Assault Rifle as part of your main is,
DMR or BR
Assault Rifle
Plasma or Frag
Firepower
Dexterity
Thruster Pack, Hardlight Shield, and Hologram, compliment the Assault Rifle well also.
> Burst fire it man, I guarantee you will come out ontop of someone who if leaving the fire button pressed, But if you are melee range spray that all over
Personally, I agree with Scarface3000. I always end up winning fights using the burst fire method.
Short Controlled Bursts
I’ve been using almost only the AR lately to try and get that commendation up. I’ve found that it does really well as an ambush weapon. Do lots of crouching with the Stealth perk. If you get the first shot off with the AR in close to mid range, chances are you’ll come out on top, then immediately find cover. It’s not a multi-kill weapon, for the most part. Pop in and out of cover and engage one enemy at a time. Seems to do pretty well for me. Also, if there is a second or third enemy after I engage the first, I’ll snag my kill and then use frags to keep them from pursuing me until my shields are back up. I’ll toss one and run for cover, then toss another at the corner that I just rounded. This will keep them from chasing. Couple that tactic with extra grenades perk or resupply perk. Does pretty well for me. I’m coming out positive in most of my matches. And I’m playing Dominion and Oddball and Regicide mostly.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention, USE THE JETPACK. People come around corners looking at eye level. Lure them around a corner and when they’re about to come around, jet pack just above their line of sight and you’ll take them nearly every time. I love that move. Works indoors as well since most of the buildings have high ceilings.
if you’re far enough that you need to burstfire with AR, you’re probably going to lose to DMR anyway
either flank them while they are distracted with your teammates, or wait crouched for them. going head to head with your red dot on their sensor is just going to spell trouble for you
as long as you get into range of full automatic spray, you’ve won the engagement already. placement is 90% of the battle for ARs
What i use for the AR
Secondary: Magnum/DMR if i use Firepower but Magnum is good on the smaller maps
AA: Depends on your preference. Jetpack eases map movement, Pro vision gives you wall hax and threat assessment, Active Camo for ambushing your targets.
Tactical Package: Mobility seems to work best for to get in closer or to escape when the situation calls for it.
Support Upgrade: Ammo or Dexterity. Either choice is very good but do keep in mind that your ammo count is much lower with Dex. Of course with such an aggressive playstyle, death is often common so ammo becomes a non issue. Ammo does give you more ammo on spawn with the benefit of more ammo on PODs too.
If you feel you absolutely must take the AR as your Primary. I definitely recommend you carry a Magnum or Plasma Pistol as your Sidearm.
With the Magnum you have a viable option for mid ranged combat in those situations you absolutely need it. As well, the Magnum is the greatest backup weapon for those “CRAP! Out of Ammo!” situations.
The Plasma Pistol is awesome in combination with Automatics because if you surprise your opponent, the overcharge puts them just a single quick burst away from death. And it’s always nice not needing to aim for the head to complete your noob combo.
But if this is the case, for absolutely sure take Shielding. You will need the faster recharge whenever you come across more than one enemy. So long as you can hold them off with your nades you should be able to survive.
And remember, hug corners like their’s no tomorrow. In this case Regeneration Field may even be viable, if you see someone on your radar approaching your corner, you can pop in and out of cover in your field to keep your shields up, while constantly diminishing your opponents’, and if they try to get close enough to make your field useless, your AR will be in it’s kill range, so you can just mow him down.
I do NOT recommend either the Storm Rifle or Suppressor as Primary weapons though, the AR is the only one with enough flexibility to be a viable choice. The SR and Suppressor have too little range.
So change my whole play style. This is gonna be gruesome.

The AR is an effective weapon as a Secondary on Haven and Adrift primarily. I find there are times and places where it is a good choice on Meltdown, or Vortex in BTB as well.
Carrying one in Objective games is really great for killing potential Flag Runners, and defending the interiors of your bases in Dominion.
^ Anything close quarters, like the maps for Regicide (save for Complex, which is too large)
e.g. Haven is pretty good for it.

It’s not that bad once you get used to it.
Maps: Haven
Adrift
Abandoned
Solace if you are feeling brave.
Complex but not outside in the open. You can use automatics inside the buildings but other than that, pack a rifle.
Eh that’s about it really. The bigger maps sans Ragnarok usually have in door segments and tight corridors that allow automatics to flourish but BTB is dominated by the DMR.

Every map has specific locations that favor fully auto weapons, even the big ones. All in all, the worst is ragnarok. Stay way from it. Dominion is great because you can lock down a base and defend it with ambush tactics, like the ones I listed above.
At first, I was gravitating toward the smaller maps on gametypes like oddball and team regicide. But I’m finding that in those games, you will typically break even or go negative when focusing on the AR. Now I’m finding I can keep my K/D decent when I’m playing longer, more strategic, less fast paced games. Try dominion or Crimson DLC playlist if you have the maps.
