I was reading about the MA5C on Halo wikia and I read that one of the changes from halo 3 to ODST was a decrease in damage by %50. I was wondering if this was actually accurate and if it was, what was the rationale for this change?
The changes to the SMG make sense to me, (more accurate, so less powerful/ ammo). But a decrease in damage by %50 for the AR for no reason doesn’t seem to make sense.
Any insight?
Thanks
Lack of shields would be my guess. Even the Brutes have a weaker shield compared to Elites, which also go away pretty much permanently.
Besides, the whole theme of the game (besides loneliness) was survival. Getting pushed up against the wall and coming out by the skin of your teeth.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the info about a 50% damage decrease was wrong. It just doesn’t make any sense considering that only Buck starts out with an AR, and ammo for it is practically non-existent. The Rookie finds a few ARs in New Mombasa, but it’s still pretty rare. So I’m wondering why Bungie would have halved the power of a weapon you hardly get to use.
Don’t know, not near my copy, load it up some games and see, because ya it seems a little off.
Perhaps raised the damage by 50% but not decreased it.
I haven’t tested halo 3 yet, but the assault rifle kills a grunt minor in 7 shots and a grunt major in 10. I’ll will see about Halo 3 later.
Not too sure, but the AR in ODST was the best AR in my opinion. Man I loved that thing.

It’s clear that the canonical approach is to ditch the AR as soon as you come across a better weapon. I think all UNSC personnel have that mindset yet still use it only because of nolstagia.
But a more likely reason is that it’s (mis)treated as a secondary weapon. After all, pistol ammo was rare in H2, H3, etc.

The MA5B was given to Marines on ships because of their stopping power and ammo capacity…not much need for many spare magazines and if you get troops in contact on a ship the spread allows for maximum damage so sucks to be an Elite in a hallway. The MA5C being the stripped down version is for more land based and less mobile engagements. Plus added range you basically have a stripped down AK47.
The SMG was designed for covert missions alone…not really something for the average grunt. Caseless ammunition means no brass to leave behind after a firefight so no one can pick up the trail.
