They’re asking if you disabled the option to perform an assassination, you’d still make progress towards the commendation. To answer the OP’s question, no. Disabling assassinations won’t let you gain credit for the commendation. You’d be doing Beat Downs at that point, which are the same as normal melee kills.
This took me a while to figure out… Especially since it shows the Ninja emblem, but not the assassination one in the kill field. I feel either or should be sufficient , makes no sense imo.

it doesn’t, which is why I only turn them on in social gameplay. Better to not use animations in ranked play, as it waste time and have seen several teammates die to people the could have killed because they were getting shot while showing off lol.
