Query: So I’ve been reading along with the various bits of Halo Canon.
At the end of Halo:Grasslands, Part of Gamma Team (spartan III’s) are alive and well alongside blue team, catherine halsey and are transferredo ff oynx dyson sphere.
However since official Halo sources have listed ASH, OLIVIA and MARK as KIA as of september 2553.
Any answer Halo? Why? How did they die? did 343 just decide they had too many surviving characters??

They’re probably die in the upcoming Last Light novel bc they are in the cover art
We don’t know how they died. The new novel Halo: Last Light has Olivia (?) on its cover and is set before their death dates in 2553, so that may explain their fate.
I dearly hope they won’t die for real in Last Light. It would be a massively anticlimactic payoff to have them “listed as KIA due to a lack of signs of life” or whatever it was that Catalog said and then for them to turn out just plain ol’ dead.

I agree we don’t have that many S-II, and just as less S-III so to know they died going into the novel will be a major bummer. So hopefully they don’t die

Actually we don’t. The majority of the Soartans in Gamma Company are part of the Spartan Branch or other special forces groups. That’s also not counting the other Spartan IIIs that were specially selected like Noble Team and the Headhunters.
I am hoping that they decide to retire or something instead of dying in Last Light. But we are gonna have to wait until September 7th to figure out their fates.
I hope it’s flat out redacted and only plays to the suspence I’ll feel “thinking” they could die.

Well we should at least consider the coincidence, Halo: Last Light and the Investigation of Gao, taking place post March in 2553… and just seven months later, the three Spartan-IIIs status is changed to KIA… not MIA… on September of 2553. Something clearly happened?
My opinion is perhaps one of the Spartan-III, possibly Ash-G099, goes AWOL or changes allegiances. This is due to learning his relatives are alive and are Insurrectionist sympathisers. Ultimately this gets Ash killed, because he attempts to stop the Spartan-IIs of Blue Team, from killing them… and Olivia and Mark are drawn to take sides. Ash is considered impulsive and somewhat reckless, who loosely adheres to protocol. Mark and Olivia refuse the offer of training future Spartan-IVs, rather participating in various tours against the Covenant and Insurrectionist.

Even those spartan teams like Noble and the Headhunters were added into the Spartan Branch, But the Headhunters are still summoned to perform those type of task from time to time as like in Halo Spartan Strike

Very much so. They listed most of the Gammas as KIA to ensure they werent found out because of their mutations
Retribution if I remember correctly is one of the most recent books (well not at the point of this mssg) compared to Last Light and Ferret Team was Listed Active
Therefore they are still alive
Remember: ONI probably classified them as KIA due to them being ODAT and Halopedia listed them as Active so I believe they are alive
