After my time with Halo 4, i’ve realized something. Halo is about giving the player options. Many options, in fact, far more options than you’d have in any other FPS out there.
Reach gave us Forge World. The ultimate playground that allowed us to unleash our imaginations and create truly spectacular environments. It is a work of genius that I truly miss and loved.
Armor customization… Although I personally prefer Halo 3’s method of awarding players with armor(Being required to complete actual challenges), Reach had a much wider selection of looks for players that actually looked like something out of the Halo universe(I’m looking at you, FOTUS).
Actual options for custom gametypes. If you’re relatively active on the creative side of Halo 4, you know what I mean.
Firefght: Bigger, better, and more badass than anything out of Spartan Ops. Despite this, I can see what 343 was trying to accomplish with SPOPS. They were trying to give fans something truly new and unseen. But at this point, it’s become quite clear that the episodic format simply doesn’t work with a game like Halo(I am not speaking for everyone).
Truly original gametypes! Invasion is simply the best objective gametype i’ve ever played since CTF. Even Headhunter and Stockpile were far more fun than anything Regicide could deliver. And hell, where did Race go in Halo 4?
Matchmaking Search Preferences. The feature that was possibly the most disregarded was actually one of the best features in the game. It finally gave me the opportunity to get matched up with players who regularly communicated amongst teammates. It helped me win. It helped me have more fun. Why remove it?
Reach isn’t perfect. I have a few issues with it that stand to this day. But when I look back at the game and my time with it, I can say this with confidence: I had plenty of fun. I feel like this game was still a true Halo experience despite its flaws.
Halo 4 has ignored these essential options and features that made Reach great. And you can see the side effects of that in the final product. It just doesn’t have that charm that other Halo games have. That charm that makes you keep thinking about them and wanting to return to them.
I sure as hell do remember Reach.
