what was better about the older games.
I thought I would come to this forum being new to the game and see all kinds of enthusiasm for Halo 4. Instead there seems to be disappointment that this game is different than some games of the past. That they don’t “feel” the same.
As someone who never played any of the previous games, can you tell me what this game is lacking?
As someone who has played all the original games, I must say that if you go back and play all the old games, most noticeably the Campaign and the Multiplayer maps are superior.
Go and get them, because they’re worth playing. TRY and push your limits in the Campaign. Walk where you doubt you can walk. Be amazed by the sheer beauty, yet amazing functionality, of the Multiplayer maps.
Oh, and I’m not talking about Reach. That was average at best.
What you’re missing, what you don’t understand, cannot really be explained.
Pretty much anything you could apply the words balanced or competetive to. That is what Halo 4 is lacking.
Thanks,
Now, how different was the Mutiplayer? Was it basically War games, team deathmatch style or were there always objective based games?
Before, you would start with a pre-determined weapon and have to pick up weapons on the map.
I hated that.
That’s about it. Other than little details, that’s the big, core gameplay change in this game.
I almost didn’t want to post in this thread, since I know it’s about to turn into a giant whine-fest. But, if you really are a new-comer, it’s best to have an unbiased, unnostalgia-tinted vision of the past Halo games.
There were always Objective games, even in Reach (which I have to keep identifying separately because it and H4 are similar, while they’re not that similar to the original trilogy).
H4 is unique in that aspect.
I’m off for now, but I really must repeat my prior suggestion to get the first three games. They’re very much worth playing and you can find a Multiplayer game in H3.
Also, what Moonbear said was largely correct but Reach was again slightly different (Classes, but predetermined for all players). Also, games prior to Reach didn’t have bloom, which is an important difference, or Armour Abilities. Overshield and Active Camouflage did exist, but you picked them up like weapons.
H1, 2 and 3 played much more like H4’s Team Doubles than H4’s Infinity Slayer, for a bit of a comparison.
Most people on the forums complaining are the competitive community. The older games were easier to have map control and had a bigger skill gap. Also halo 2/3 had in game ranks that was on a 1-50 scale and you could only move up if you won a game. Also if you lost you would go down a rank sometimes. basically older games had a bigger skill gap and more competitive. Also weapons spawned at specific location every game and on a set timer so if you got good at remembering those locations and times you would own the map and most likely win.
I’m surprised that H4 being your first Halo game brought you to these forums… I recommend you play the others as well. I really love the campaign in H4 but you definitely need to play some matchmaking in H3.
Halo 4 is just different.
When I played Halo 1 years ago I just rushed through the game but I was in amazement at such detail the game had to offer. Looking at how massive the Truth and Reconciliation was, then looking at the variation on the Assault on the Control Room, looking at the battles between the Flood and Covenant in Keyes.
Then I play Halo 2 the campaign disappointed me but the Multiplayer was something new, something fresh and was well needed. In fact it was the first game I played online. And I enjoyed it despite the glitches, button manipulation, and mods.
Halo 3 came along and it was the most balanced Halo. The campaign was done correctly and it has probably the most influence seen in any Halo adaptation. From the Elites, to the armor, to the Marines. The ranking system returned and was also done correctly. I had a reason to play competitively and get better at the game.
Halo 3 ODST came and introduced a large expansive world and firefight, only problem was the price and the lack of online Firefight.
Then Halo:Reach came… that was the first sign of change and that was the first time I felt disappointed with a Halo game. The campaign wasn’t what I was expecting, sadly I really was expecting The Fall of Reach as a book. It did have it’s highlights though. But the Multiplayer just hurt my soul. With the gimmicks like armor lock and the Hiroshima Nuke Grenades.
Halo 4 I’m satisfied but I wish they did a bit more.

More custom games options. People used to make some pretty insane gametypes that are no longer possible to make.
More vehicles.
Arguably more varied weapons.
Ability to play as an Elite in multiplayer.
Arguably better Forge.
No Ordnance.
Weapons spawned at fixed locations at fixed times.
Everyone spawned with the same exact weapons.
Dual Wielding.
Better designed maps (give Last Resort a try, you won’t be disappointed).
List goes on, it would take too long to list or remember everything that is missing.

Going backwards in multiplayer isn’t always the best idea, nor experience. “Why can’t I rejoin this game after my net dropped?” “Why do I feel like I’m moving so slow?” “This fires so differently then it does in Halo 4…”
If anything I would watch old VoDs, much less frustrating and you still get the same idea.
But somethings that others have forgotten:
When you’re scoped in and get shot you get taken out of the scope.
Slower kill times, the kill times in Halo 3 were slower than Halo 4.
Faster base movement speed. Basically instead of sprint Spartans ran faster then they do now, but there was no sprint.
Br was the god weapon. People complain about the DMR, BR was basically the same thing.

To me I like Halo 4 but it just doesn’t feel polished or finished. Halo 4 shipped with the worst matchmaking playlists, the game was missing ALOT of gametypes on-disk, lack of great maps, UI, campaign length (Halo 4 is one of my favorite Halo stories but its short, and lack of customization compared to Halo Reach. IMO the biggest problems Halo 4 has is:
- No Ranking System(must be ingame!)
- Lack of Playlists/gametypes
- Lack of customization promised (343i said many times when they revealed their new modes they would be heavily customizable)
- Maps (Game shipped with only 10 maps and few good ones)
- Need of TU (I wish “Infinity” gametypes would just go away but that wont happen -_-)
I could right alot about mechanics and stuff, but I’ll just reference ‘fun’ by leaving this here:

It was less chaotic, and more of a balanced gameplay. Everyone started off on an even playing field which was honestly for me the best part. Some may not like this but weapons were readily available on the maps so it wasnt that big of a deal if you didnt like the starting weapons. It was just up too you to go and grab one and not have it handed too you.
Some may not agree with me but previous games focused more on teamwork then halo 4. Halo 4 is more lone wolves/camping. You needed your team to do even remotley anything good in previous games, you needed map control. You needed the power weapons and you needed to take it slow and pay attention to everything going on.
Its not nostalgia, it is just the older games were more balanced and focused more on working as a team. I found them fun and this new style of having everything handed too you and not having to even go around to find pp’s or plasma grenades is not fun.
> The BR took skill, the DMR does not.
I never said one was more skillful for or less skillful. I said that the BR held the same level of dominance that the DMR does now. Please don’t put words in my mouth.

That truly was epic and hilarious at the same time xD. Don’t know why I never saw this vid.

I loved that. Starting a game where everyone starts off the same made controlling weapons, powerups, equipment, and map control more important. In H4 theres no need to know where/when certain weapons/powerups spawn on map because they don’t. Instead, you’re handed them randomly for getting a few points or they’re dropped randomly in random locations.
Halo 2 and 3 had the best custom game options. In 2007 me and a friend started a 16 player free for all with all vehicles and all weapons on coagulation. We send out game invites to all recent players, and they invited their friends. Fights broke out as to what map and game options would be next. It was the coolest thing ever. Halo 2 was the s h 1 t.

Play Halo 3
Its like nothing you have ever played.
Better yet, get ODST, it comes with all of Halo 3’s Map packs.
Both are less then $20
It feels like a completely different game
