IMO I think we all need to thank the art team at 343i. Everything I’ve seen game play wise has been BEAUTIFUL. The game looks great (the engineers really nailed one with the lighting) and it looks better than ever.
The main reason for this topic though is the Concept art, details on guns, characters, and maps. I love how everything looks in the maps. The snow effects on Longbow, the rubble effects in Adrift and the Mech in the center, and my favorite Haven I’ve always loved the forerunner look. The guns look amazing and the attention to detail in the characters is astounding.
Then there is the Concept Art. Halo 4 Concept Art is amazing it gives that sense of mystery and wonder on the most EPIC scale. I’m definitely buying Awakening: Art of Halo 4.
Art team, you really blew it out of the water this time!!
I’ll tell you. Everything looks much better than I could ever have expected. But the promethean and spartan designs I’ll have to admit, are dead hideous.
Elites, Grunts and Spartans are hideous, they need desperate polish.
The Spartan IV designs I wish weren’t as dramatic as they are, but I can deal with them. Prometheans seem ok enough to me though.

Maybe I said wrong. They aren’t exactly ugly, I just wish the knights didn’t have such a humanized look.

Yes. Character design is absolutely part of the art direction.

Of course I’m complaining, it’s a genuine complaint that I feel needs to be sorted and probably will be sorted. It’s not just me who feels the Spartans, Elites and Grunts feel too plasticy; loads of others feel that way too.
If we don’t voice our complaints in some way, shape or form, 343 won’t think of it as a problem and that can be very bad for the game. I want the best for Halo 4, I don’t want to pretend like it’s all fine and dandy like you guys do because that can hurt the game a lot.

Well it’s your opinion they look humanised, I don’t think that.
Besides, why is that a bad thing?

Of course it’s my opinion. I just wish their faces weren’t as defined. It makes me feel that these constructs could somehow have a society on their own (I don’t know how to better explain this), which is really not something I’d prefer for a security sentry such as itself, in my opinion.

YEs,it has that Crysis2 feel as terms as how the art/graphics present itself…well at least in the first mp gameplay trailers…now it looks less shiney but in a way better…hard to explain fully.

That’s a little arrogant that you think that your eye for what you find pleasing is what everyone should accept and if not the game will be bad, this goes for all your friends. That suddenly 343’s game is going to be terrible because of the art designs and three toes. From what I saw the new designs did everything they should have in the demo at the E3. The grunts felt like grunts. The Elite smacking the grunt in the head was a added animation and really made his death that more enjoyable, while adding to the WTF factor when it comes to what is going on this planet we’re about to adventure in. Seems like the Art guys earned a check.
The Art department did a great job in drawing and re-designing Bungie’s antagonists as something new as well as similar at the same time. I’m not pretending anything The Promethean and Covenant designs fit right into the awe that was the E3 Halo 4 showcase too bad for you if you don’t like them, looks pretty finished from here to do a complete re-design before Novemeber.

I am a bit torn on Halo 4. On one hand I think the scenery and level designs we’ve seen are incredible and easily better than anything I’ve ever seen in Halo, but on the other hand I’ve seen some really odd/bad/terrible design work on things like the Elite, Grunt, Warthog and some of the weapons (Storm Rifle springs to mind).
It almost seems like the art team at 343i is made of some genius trailblazer artists and some average sub-par artists and I can see that through the artwork.
I still can’t believe the Plasma Rifle, a beautiful iconic Halo design, has been phased out to be replaced by the Storm Rifle. Ugly, boring and unmemorable.
I’ll tell you, when I saw the Infinity breaking through the clouds and Master Chief walking through the Jungle, I felt like screaming out loud, “ARE THOSE THE -Yoinking!- IN GAME GRAPHICS HOLY -Yoink-”
Yeah thats what I thought too. Sometimes I think “this is amazing” and other times I think “they can’t be serious”, I have really mixed feeling about the artistic direction of Halo 4. I’ve never had these mixed feelings about any Halo game, I’ve always been blown away and excited about everything I’ve seen so its a bit worrying to have this feeling about Halo 4.
