Armour Materials

I know the hot topic right now is bashing the coating system and rightfully so. On a positive note though, it looks like there will be materials. When I saw that purple skin, the metal looked very clean. Which is fine but I was hoping that not all armour would look like that as I like some more grit. Luckily it looks like we’re getting different armour textures in the form of “materials” judging by that new red/black/grey coating they showed off… wonder how much they’ll cost lol

No idea man, if it’s anything like Destiny the “material” effect actually comes from the shader (coating) itself, not some other customisable option.

We need to give the armor coating a chance, we aren’t seeing the entire picture yet of the customizations yet. Plus it’s possible their hand was forced to reveal this small piece of customizations due to leaks and small reveals from the extra content from promotions. Besides, when do you ever hear of 343 talking about customizations so early prior to a game’s launch anyway especially considering how we have not seen a single piece of multiplayer yet in the first place?

We absolutely should not give armor coating a chance. It’s going to be “taking the place of the primary/secondary armor color options found in prior games” according to 343. It doesn’t matter if their hand was forced or not, we have to act against this. Otherwise we’ll lie down and take it like we did with Halo 5.

We should be just as aggressive in standing against vapid consumerism as 343 is in their monetization of Infinite.

And to reply to the OP, we can’t say there are any positives coming out of armor coating or try to see any good out of this because there isn’t. Do not give 343 any room.

I don’t think they planned it either, but instead decided to either push their update about armor coatings forward or make something on the spot about them. At least recently, 343 has been doing a fair bit of that. The announcement of multiplayer being free-to-play came days after a reveal from one of the branches of Xbox saying multiplayer was going to be free, and as the news stormed across the community, they announced it in a Tweet. Similarly, the armor coatings were revealed by the companies 343 was working with for promotional material before 343 had even mentioned their existence, and after some time, the community update came out talking about them. I feel like often they hadn’t planned for the more recent drops of information we’ve gotten, and instead they were going to wait much later.

We absolutely aren’t seeing the full picture of customization, and I strongly believe 343 should start talking about that moreso now than later. Our trust in customization within Halo isn’t exactly in the best place right now, so something elaborating on armor coatings and exploring armor piece customization to more strongly reassure folks that 343 is somewhat staying true to their world about Reach-like customization would help repair some of that damage. Not that people shouldn’t be upset, I think they should be and should make it clear to 343 that most of us really dislike this change, but at least hearing about what they do have that’s better would help.

I’m interested to see more about armor coatings, especially the materials and how they are implemented across armor coatings. I hope that I can alter what materials are applied, but given that they said that these textures/materials/colors are baked into the coating, I assume I can’t alter much of anything about them.

As I said, we aren’t seeing the full thing yet. Maybe if you give them a chance, you might like it. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but bashing on something without seeing the whole thing in play with all the other customizations at work is just being toxic.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the coating system. Just thought it’s nice that there will be different armour textures, but the fact that they’re seemingly tied to coatings sucks. Not trying to say there’s anything good about the coating system itself

I mean I like the way some of these renderings look. I just am not a fan of hoping you can find one that you like with all the different layers specifically tailored to your liking.

I look at it as a menu at a restaurant…you can add and subtract things off a certain item but if the company decided “this is what you get and you’ll eat it regardless” then I’d imagine that particular franchise would be going out of business pretty quickly.

I’m quoting what they said, it’s pretty straightforward. Is it toxic to criticize companies when they try to squeeze money out of consumers?
