Allow me to first say, I’m beyond happy that it is gone. However, its not the ability to become invincible that is the problem. A percentage of the problem, sure. The biggest problem with Armor Lock in my opinion was the fact that it was the only armor ability (other than drop shield, which was only for a second) that allowed you a 3rd person, 360 degree view of the battlefield. So you could make a stupid mistake, go into armor lock, then have ten seconds to recharge your shield and think about your next move based on your view of everything.
The TU did some good for the balance of armor lock but it still had its one fatal flaw, 3rd person perspective. If you remained in 1st person while using it, it would have auto balanced itself. You would have invincibility, but a severe lack of situational awareness. Even if they made it so that you could see what was in front of you it would work waaaay better because you still don’t know if there are people behind you. It would be even better if it had disabled HUD elements due to it using all power resources to “lock” up. This would of forced people to use AL in the manner if was I initially intended. That is, to avoided being splattered or eating a rocket and things of that nature. This would have eliminating a lot of the bs from the ability thus making it much less annoying when encountered. Still slows the game down though and I am in no way in support of armor lock, just saying. Halo is an fps, and at no point other than being in a vehicle should we be allowed to have the 3rd person perspective. I still don’t know why turrets are 3rd person other than the fact that you move much slower I guess.
Idk I’m just thinking out loud here but I guess the relevant tie in to Halo 4 for this thread is the Hardlight shield. Why on earth does it go into a 3rd person perspective? I don’t get it. The shield is see-thru so it seems natural that to balance a defensive ability like that, you should have to trade off a little situational awareness by having your vision slightly obscured. Hardlight Shield seems much less powerful than AL obviously but it still boggles me as to why it throws you into third person. What’s the point?
Spartans may be super soldiers but their eyes are planted firmly in the front of their skulls like the rest of us.
> I can’t wait to see a group of players make a Spartan Bubble with the HLS. Will be sick.
Then somebody throws a grenade in the top. Gotta love dat balance.
OT: Even with your fix, it doesn’t fix the fact that AL stills gives the user the ability to shrug off advantages an attacking player may have (ambush, rockets, boosting ghost etc.) . Or, it gives the user a couple extra seconds of life where he’ll die anyway, leading to that infamous and annoying pause button senario. I believe, and this is just an opinion, that the idea behind giving a player even a second of invincibility off spawn is fundementally flawed. I don’t even care much about it(I don’t frequent playlists where its worst i.e. Team Slayer) , but I can see its flaws and why it should be removed.
The reason bungie put armor lock in Reach was to avoid close death points in game so you can have a few seconds to plan and figure out what todo next. And let me bring a big halo 3 complaint no way to avoid being insta killed when stuck with a grenade. Bungie went with your guys complaints and put armor lock for the soul purpose of avoiding near death. In my opinion armor lock is ok you guys just cant stand when they use it to their advantage to survive your attacks.
The main problem with Armor Lock was that when you went into it, you paused that specific encounter with a press of a button for a few seconds. Such a thing should never happen in a game that is supposed to be fast. That coupled with the fact that Armor Lock has absolutely no benfit for gameplay. It’s either the ultimate escape from a tough situation if you have a teammate around or it is just there to delay your eventual death. Armor Lock is the only armor ability that can never work to any extent in any way. The whole design of it is pointless.

Armor lock was one of the worst things ever put in halo. You’re right I can’t stand it when I have somebody beat and they just press a button so they can be invincible and have their teammates save them. It takes no skill to use, it’s cheap and just slows down gameplay. I also don’t remember anybody complaining in halo 3 about having no way to avoid being insta killed when stuck with a grenade. If somebody sticks you with a grenade you should die.

Yeah in alot of sense it was unfair but when you had you alone against 2 or 3 people it helped even it out a little

Yeah it would give you a chance to have your teammates come and save you. Otherwise you would be screwed right when you come out of armor lock if you were alone against 2 or 3 people. I just didn’t really like AL and thought it was cheap and annoying but that’s just my imo. I really think the hardlight shield is a good replacement for AL though.

I didn’t bother explaining this because it seems to me that it would be self evident but apparantly it needs to be explained.
I don’t know what car you are driving, but mine has a rear view mirror and two side view mirrors that I can use to see what’s behind me. On top of that, I can turn my body and head around while still driving to see what’s going on back there. Now tell me, how do-able do you think rear and side view mirrors on a ghost are? How well do you think adding the ability to look over your shoulder while driving the hog is going to work? 3rd person driving circumvents these problems. Which is why I agree with it. I say again, 3rd person should be exclusive to driving.

No, Armor Lock being cheap and annoying isn’t merely an opinion, but a fact.
You know, when me and my friends play we don’t seem to have all the problems people keep complaining about when it comes to Armor Lock… It’s not nearly as hard to beat as a tank that can survive multiple rocket shots and has an enclosed cockpit that takes at least two sniper shots to get a kill on (versus Halo 1’s single shot mind you). It’s not nearly as rough as that guy with the jetpack who gets the rockets or even as brutal as a sword guy with sprint.
Without fail, we always embarrassed anyone who tried to use AL against us. Why? because we actually know how to play the game and don’t make assumptions that when we put in the absolute bare minimum amount of damage to kill someone that they are going down. We stay alert and aware of what’s being used against us and then do our best to beat it. And AL is definitely FAR from unbeatable. So keep whining about things that are still fun, we’ll keep playing and adapting.

Armor Lock was not fun, AT ALL.
Now that (highlighted) actually takes skill, map knowledge, and weapon grabbing strategy (when to know if you should stay away from weapon spawns).
