Armor Helmet Variants

What is 343i’s obsession with creating helmets with no visors. This may seem like a small point, but I personally think that every armor that doesn’t have a visor looks dumb. I would love to go back to the days of Reach where the armor mods were great and actually looked like they would be useful in a fight.

Technology has arguably more than quadrupled between 2553 and 2558 - ONI has the Trevelyan facilities, Forerunner Huragok (Engineers), Covenant Huragok, active technology trade with ex-Covenant client species such as Sangheili and unofficially Kig-yar, as well as access to two of the Halo Installations and Installation 00, the Ark.

In other words, they’ve apparently gotten to the point where they can develop MJOLNIR that can project a perfect view without need for an actual visor plate - that said, I’m sure it’s only for specially trained individuals considering how few non-visor variants there are compared to those with visors. After all, Huragok have already proven to be capable of making armor that’s transparent to the naked eye - Kilo-5 Trilogy.

Also, before we get to praising Reach’s armor and such, might I remind you of GUNGNIR? Reach’s variant had no real discernible visor. So really you can thank Bungie and Reach for starting the trend before we go blaming an entire company

Soon visors are oldschool stuff because there is no need for them.

Umm… whether or not you like them aesthetically is your opinion, obviously, but a helmet that’s all armor and has no glass visor would actually be more useful in a fight.

its 2558, with all the advances in technology, the Forerunner tech they have, they probably have a super advanced imaging system that turns the entire inside of the helmet into a vertual visor.

It makes sense lore wise to have a helmet without a visor. The visor would be the weakest point on the helmet which is probably why headshots are so effective gameplay wise.

I personally use Warrior because the visor is still seeable but not overly big, and wouldn’t break in a combat scenario.

Interestingly enough though, yesterday I read through all the VISR descriptions in Halo 5, and at least two visors are actually more durable than the rest of the helmet. It suggests to me that the average visor is nearly as tough as the rest of the helmet. Point and case, John took a Spartan-IV in Gen-II armor’s fist to the face and it only appears to have cracked the outer-most layer of his visor, which one can imagine is a redundant safety feature.

Mjolnir has always used cameras to project what’s going on outside the helmet, the visors were only ever there for ascetic appeal.

Some helmets are ruined by the fact they have no visor, engineer for example but certain helmets like infiltrator look badass.

I just wish there would be more ODST variants. Nightfall looks like an astronaut helmet and Helljumper takes forever and then some with luck to get lol

I understand the tech advances, but I was just wondering if anyone else thought the same way about visors that I did. The real argument is really for armor upgrades like reach had. I also liked reaches equipment because it looked like mass produced military gear.

Well that’s what’s interesting about Gen-II! It’s no longer mass-produced in the way Spartan-II/III MJOLNIR add-ons would have been, because MJOLNIR schematics have entered the private market and are now contracted out to the UNSC. As such, suits are more custom-built for very specific strengths or scenarios. They no longer need the mass-produced military hardware add-ons that Spartans used to have to take.

Technology improvements generally mean everything has gotten cheaper and easier to produce, which allows for more schematics and more personalized gear - hence why there are more variants rather than less variants with more add-ons.
