So based on this video, it appears as though there is only a primary and secondary color option. But seeing actual Spartans in the recent wave of gameplays tells me otherwise. Here is topic where I speculated that we’d have some more color options based on some Campaign evidence. But let’s look at what we’ve recently gotten our hands on.
Now, as we know, Team gametypes pick our colors for us. Based on what we’ve seen of the Recruit-armored Spartans in gameplays, I assumed those colors were Red Primary, with a lighter red secondary. Swap in two different Blues for Blue Team of course. But clearly this isn’t the mandatory team colors for everyone. Here is a guy wearing Stalker whose color scheme is Red and White, with no lighter red in sight. Which is different from the Recruit armor of other Red Team members. And in various other images you can see that some armors feature different color schemes despite the Spartans all being on the same team. Some have the white and Red, some just have two different Reds. And others seem to even have a 3rd non-red color showing through. (The yellow on his armor in this picture)
And then we have something even more interesting. Spartans with 4 colors on them. This guy wearing Breaker has 4 different colors on him. A dark Blue, a Light Blue, a medium Blue between for the Undersuit, and white. And coming back to this image, the closer guy on the right side has 2 different reds, white, and green in his color scheme. So now we have people on the same teams with different color schemes, people with 2 colors only, 3 colors, or even 4 colors. And no way to know why this is or just how many colors you get to customize on our Spartans. And that breaker picture almost seems to confirm having your undersuit be a different color in multiplayer, even though the other armors don’t show this so far. Here’s some more screenshots I just took that show more of what I’m talking about. And just for general awesomeness.

Hm. Didn’t occur to me at first, but yo might be right. Although that seems odd. There are plenty of armors in these gameplays that have very significant amounts of white on them. For that much white to just be mandatory for the armor set almost seems odd. But maybe it just depends on the skin. So that might solve the mystery of the 4 colored Spartans. But it looks like we’ll definitely have 3 colors to customize. This screenshot here is of a spartan in the post game showing his natural color scheme without the team coloring. Clearly there are 3 colors. Nice to see.
But I can’t figure out that undersuit color on the Breaker armor. Perhaps for some armors/skins the 3rd color option might effect the undersuit? And not just parts of the armor?

Hm . Well, at this point I’ve come to the conclusion that there are 3 armor colors, and that the explanation for why the Breaker armor has a separately colored undersuit from its primary armor color is because for that armor skin for breaker, the 3rd color is on the undersuit. (There’s actually some of that 3rd color on the leg too) Which could mean that every armor will have an alternate skin where its 3rd color is on the undersuit. If this is the case then there will be armors where the undersuit coloring is not tied to the primary color like it normally is, which means you can set the 3rd color to black/steel whatever the darkest color is and pretty much have your black undersuit.
And I never actually heard of 343 promising a blacksuit. But a few people brought it up recently so that must have been a thing. Well, you might just get what you asked for.

Josh Homes tweeted about black suit months ago (30 march) on twitter when someone asked him about those black undersuit. If you go in internet and you write “halo 5 black undersuit” you’ll see.
I don’t know if i can post the link (because it could be spam, don’t know for sure) but trust me, Josh said that so i’m expecting that!
I don’t know why, and I don’t care. We need the option for black undersuits end of story. Frankly the power rangers argument is picking up steam with every picture.
