Armor coatings

So besides solid colors are we going to see designs like halo 5 varieties with flames and patterns? What do you guys want to see? Is there going to be a Banished red or a Sangheili color? Maybe camouflage colors?

With the long lifespan of the game, i assume there will be hundreds of designs. With the Reach style customization i doubt there will be the “90% of H5 armor not being used” issue as well.

I would love more designs but I would love to be able to put your emblem on your armor and size it and place it the way you want so you can have unsc on your chest or a grunt skull on your arm. -Yoink- like that to make your armor your own and actually see the difference in game. but also I would love to see the return of the Hyabusu armor from H3. speaking on colors they need to widen their pallet for sure. but as the dude above said this is going to be a long running and updated game so we will see a ton of good -Yoink- coming though i hope

I want to see a futuristic/tron styled coating consisting of a black primary and a neon blue secondary pattern along the armor when equipped.

I still think that everyone should have 1 customizable coating that will give you the primary/secondary color system we had before, while coatings can give you special armor appearances like camouflage.

I would love to see a sand yellow coating with a small amount of purple. or any yellow with a purple secondary

Desert coating and spec-ops coating please…pretty please

We’re going to need a lot more than that. Even just all the basic color combinations we can already have in H5 comes out to over 3,000 if I’m not mistaken.

Perhaps, looks like there will be alot of options to choose from so maybe we might get cool themes like that too.

Yeah I’m hoping to be able to have a solid blue armor coating w/ my armor choice. Maybe you start off with some coating or none. I have a feeling “armor coating” is like weapon skins but I wounded can you use up an armor coating? Does it cover the whole Spartan? Is it per piece as in left shoulder, right shoulder, helmet… and would you be unlocking them per armor piece all your armor?

I was disappointed with no Grunt Head in Halo 5. Used it in the other games. hoping it makes a comeback. the customize the size of it idea you said would be nice. id def rock a giant Grunt symbol on my chest or back. prolly back so I could see it when drivin the ghost or mongoose.

Someone posted some stats (or maybe it was a youtube video) when the coatings thing first erupted… that despite the raw number of combinations… only a fraction of them are ever actually used.

It won’t be hard for them to tick the boxes for 99.99% (made up statistic) of users.

Even if it’s only a fraction of them that’s still dozens of coatings, and call me cynical but I kinda have doubts we’re gonna start with all those.

I think I recall that video, I’m sure it was a Dev on a livestream that mentioned it.
To be honest, if they took the base colours of black, steal, Light grey, and white, and then made 10 Coatings for each using the top 10 secondary colours, they’d probably have 90% of the playerbase covered, haha.

To be honest, I find myself leaning in favour of Coatings, given what we’ve seen so far.
In previous games, the secondary colour appeared in areas based on the individual piece of armour being used, and couldn’t be moved.
From what we’ve seen so far, the Coating system looks to allow for more customization in colour placement, the one-red-arm coating as example. I’d expect to see other coatings using the same arrangement of design, but with various colours.

First of, one of the main reasons not all color combinations aren’t used is the color pie.
Not all color combinations are aesthetically pleasing, and aren’t used as frequently.

Second, doesn’t the same statistic apply to armor pieces?
Halo 5 has a ridiculous amount of armor pieces for each individual slot, and from my understanding we’re going to get Reach level inspired customization. Couple that with the free to play multiplayer and ten year plan, we’re going to see a rain of new armor pieces. Probably going up to nine figure amount of different combinations, only ever limited by what players have unlocked.

Third, even looking at skins only, there’s a high chance older ones will be completely redundant after a year or two due to newer cooler ones being released as time pass on, when the artists learn new tricks and technologies may be updated or even added. Becuase i343 want to sell them.
I also suspect they’ll intentionally make uglier ones just to pad a potential game pass or whatever system they end up with, to incentivise purchases.

Maybe there was, but I don’t recall anyone defending i343’s choice to have pre-set color combinations for emblems when Halo 5 launched, using “unused color combinations statistics”.

I don’t see thay statistic as that relevant either as each color combination didn’t cost Bungie a lot, as it’s a system which generate them, all 3000ish combinations haven’t been manually made by people and implemented.
Something I suspect i343 will spend more manpower and resources on for skins, than had they allowed for color customization, even on indovidual skins.
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the same “not used” statistics are close to what’s said for Reach, with Halo Infinite skins down the line.

I want one where that’s primarily Black and then the second color is a glowing Red. That would be sick

I was thinking one that is Silver/Gold like the Arbiters armor and the Under Suit matches the Arbiters Under Suit.

I’d like to share my thoughts on the bit I highlighted…
This may just come down to personal preference, but particularly in Halo 2, and especially for Elites, I find that almost any colour combination I try looks pretty good! In Halo 3, I can also run wild with the colours and although it usually turns out great for both species, I find it a little lacking since the secondary colour now only applies to the shoulderpads and some parts of the helmet.
You’re right, of course, not all the colours are pleasing. Although I personally think that mostly applies to Halo Reach and Halo 5.

Bottom line is they are going to make a small fortune selling coatings.

Start of with basics. Move onto fancier ones.

Limited editions.

Then themed ones; sports teams, superheroes, cartoon characters…

And when they eventually get around to releasing dynamic ones… you will hear the deafening snap of wallets opening around the world.

And all this will fund the DLC and servers for the game into the future! Bring it on…

A coating that’ll let me choose my colors.
