Who thought they were a good idea? It wouldn’t be a big problem if they were all unlocked. These are a bunch of colors. Why lock them? Normal color customization should have been brought back, because I can’t use the red and black combination on the Rakshasa armor. Infact, I have no access to the other colors for it since they’re all locked, and the one I do want which is Blazing Gunmetal is not free. Just give us old color customization back please. If it wasn’t broken, don’t fix it.
I know what you mean, but having color customisation defeats the object of free to play, unless it’s restricted to certain colour options I guess.
The blazing gunmetal is locked in battle pass, so it’s unlockable, hopefully when cross core comes it’s easier to mix and match things.
I think that pretty much nobody thought it was a perfect idea, but that it was viewed as a “necessary evil” for FTP monetization with a bright side of providing some genuinely awesome new possibilities (patterns, textures, etc.) at the expense of freedom of player choice in coloring their armor how they pleased.
It’s another example of 343i failing to “read the room” in terms of what their core fans generally consider to be acceptable. I think they totally expected a degree of backlash, but that the player base would by and large roll over on the issue over time. They might’ve actually been right on that second point- the outcry about coatings has steadily diminished for the most part since they were first announced in the fall of 2020.
In the years to come, I think we can look forward to gradual improvements to the system, starting with the (hopefully complete) removal of core restrictions for coatings. In time, I’d like to see 343i implement Bungie’s Destiny 2 shader system and allow players to individually equip separate coatings to every armor piece they’re wearing. That’d allow for more overall possible combinations and more granular control than any Halo game has ever had, which would be really cool.
Regardless of whatever improvements eventually come, the downside that isn’t ever going away is that it’ll never be free to express yourself with any color combo you want in this game, as it always has been in previous Halo titles. That sucks, no way around it.
I think the best middle ground would be something like this: Each coating is looked at as more of a pattern, and players can pick the colors that are used in that pattern. So maybe you have the Scorpion Punch Coating, which is all black except for the red right arm. Instead of this, players would be able to pick what color to make the arm and what color to make the rest of the body. This way, there actually would be more customization freedom than past games, because in past games, we were locked to one pattern. The primary, secondary, (and tertiary) colors always mapped to the same locations on the armor. Another example would be that green camo coating; I think it was unlocked from the campaign. It has two colors, a light green and a forest green. It would be really cool if we could have the camo pattern and pick our two favorite colors to be the camo colors.
I doubt this would ever happen, but I can’t help but think about what could have been.
WARFRAME IMMEDIATLY BLASTS YOUR POINT OUT OF THE WATER
granted you have to pay for a pallet to use on whatever you wish but it allows a wide range of colour customisation on your frames alonw, ignoring the fact its also applicable to weapons, your ship, archwings, railjacks, space mom etc etc etc.
forgive my aggression, i just know a better free to play experience which does not excuse Infinite’s poor decisions.
Agreed.
You also don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. You can get the free palettes through time, or from seasons for one in game credit. You can also earn the platinum to buy others you might like.
I always agree with your posts. Halo could have been free to play without charging for restricted use colours. Warframe is one of the best examples of a free to play game with a very decent in game economy.
Halo could learn a lot from Warframe.
That is true, what makes warframe’s system so great isnt the fact that you buy a whole pallete theme of colours (it helps) its the fact you can freely apply it as you please, mixing in colours from other palletes too its great.
Still waiting for 343 to announce NFT Coatings and change Credits into a Cryptocurrency
Warframe and destiny 2 says otherwise heck warframe has so many color pallettes its insane
Not if you do a bit of blueprint trading some of these blueprints used to give you a insane amount of the premium currency from people especially if it was a vaulted prime frame that hasn’t been unvaulted for a good while
That is true, it helps that there is an ingame system that allows for getting the microtransaction currency, Infinite’s problem in comparison is theres no other way to get the currency from gameplay (BP currency is enough to invest in the next BP at best, at least that is normally the case.)
Cough Warframe Cough
1 Free Palette, 5 - 6 earnable Event Palettes, 1 Legacy Palette for older players. Monetized Palettes around 10+
F2P can’t colour pick. Lol.
I liked the idea of coatings, but it should have been in conjunction with basic customization, not trap it.
But that’s the whole business model, monetize every customization aspect and they just went too far hence the no cross core.
I’ve already got 3 or 4 that I really like. So I’m pretty happy.
Still don’t have any with my preferred primary / secondary combination though… so fingers crossed something will come up soon.
This. If we had this at the start, no one would complain (except for Halo traditionalists I guess).
Would be just in time too, as the NFT market has taken a dive. I’m sure that will help ‘reinvigorate the franchise’.
If anything allow us to use the same default colors from Halo 5 and the coatings can just be an overlay on top of those, like Anthem did.
But yea 343 did us dirty,
Dude Halo 5 had 60 default colors we could use. And Halo Infinite just gave us 10 and they straight up paywalled the other 50. Like I swear a scarlet wake red is just generic red from Halo 5.
And worse they sold players the same Scarlet wake red color three times once per core.
That’s straight Acuff and dirty of them.
This^ is literally the #1 problem with 343 that has gone on since Halo 4. How the hell do you not learn after a decade to work with what actually works for the game and either go with what works or improve things if possible?
This is why I stop playing infinite in the first month it released, and here it is 6 months later and infinite has barely moved forward. They are literally fighting the player base to keep their broken system they have set up for infinite, and instead of actually fixing it, they will look for ways around it so they are able to keep the broken system. it is the worst I’ve experienced ever playing any Halo game, and the subject is only about shaders.
Do I dare bring up how broken the rest of the game is, because 343 likes to “fix” what was never broken?
343 stop trying to turn Halo into something it’s not because all you are doing is making matters worse. There is no benefit fighting what has actually works for the game just to (have things how you only want.)
Free to play and coatings have all been horrid
The greedy executives that run 343 thought this was a good idea. They saw an opportunity to break/ruin an aspect of the game (customization) that people had always loved, and then sell players proposed solutions to the broken system at exorbitant prices.
And gamers, like fools, are easily parted from their money, so everyone happily buys $5-20 colors for their armor and 343 gets to make money hand over fist on it.
Modern gaming customers are very happy to reward developers for actively breaking and sabotaging game systems.
And then everyone wonders why Infinite has no content and runs on spaghetti code and prayers.
