Armor coatings to not support player Expression in the slightest. I love a lot of the things I have seen with Infinite but others I do not. Like and armor set locked behind a paywall with color coatings. What Armor Coatings should have been is just a coating for the armor, like textures. Rusted, shiny and new, worn, color locations. That is what the Coatings should have been.
The options for coatings could be many different things. Like where colors show up on armor. By default the secondary may show up on both shoulders but what if you only want it on one? What about stripes on a helmet? If there is a large stripe down the middle and two on the sides, allow that to be changed with a coating. Allowing players to choose their own colors with a color coating pallet than changes the position of the colors on armor would show more Player Expression than what we have now.
Another Idea for coatings, have two or maybe three coating options. One for Color position changes and the other for the texture of the armor as well. Unlocking textures for the armor or color positioning, like camo pallet.
I donāt think coatings are bad, but the way that they have been introduced is not great. Colors being locked behind a paywall or through xp does not allow players to express themselves in the slightest. Currently I have to wait for a Silver and Gold coating and hope itās available for the armor core I want. Due to this myself, along with other players, can not express ourselves the way 343 said we could.

Agreed i was also very disappointed with the lack of armor customization but hey its still only in beta

Another topic of player expression, there are more people with the base armors thanks to paywall armors and a battle pass that requires you to buy it.
Yeah it feels bad that I canāt just pick exactly the colors I want as primary, secondary, tertiary, etc. Sell me more colors if you want, or even textures/patterns. But not being able to just have the control to select my OWN primary, secondary, etc colors is just bad. Feels so terrible. Even if you give me a coating that gets close to what Iād choose myself, it just isnāt the same because itās not up to me.

This ābetaā should have all the basic colors that would be in any other Halo game. But it doesnāt. Iām hoping they change the coating system at some point.

I express my ācolorsā by painting my armor with the blood of my enemies!
Honestly though they are doing armours cores and coatings to work with mixing them up with bots for the time being till they do an update
Yeah, itās crap that you have to pay for or earn a can of spray paint for your Spartan.

Could not agree more! This system ignores player expression for making all players look the same. Very disappointing!
343 could have armor coatings as unlocks, but still have a color wheel to choose primary, secondary and a detail color as well. However, no color choices, no custom emblems and no commendation system to earn unique armor is just bland and boring. I expected a much better system than what we have.

Yeah but they need some way to pad out the pass.
Except they all but removed blood in this game xp

The pass could have all of the armors that they have shown in trailers and used a similar system to what MCC had. Giving the battle pass relevance. But with the system they had there is no player expression at all. Most players I see wear default armor.

Swing and a miss. Negativity is a disease and youāre a can cer
Hilarious(? At least ironic) how much more negative and toxic your comment is. All I did was say the truth. A neutral truth. Youāre the one insulting people.
Good post op! This is something thatās bothered me from the minute i loaded up infinite. I have preferred color combinations I like to use, and the fact that weāre offered so many palettes that are either nigh indistinguishable from each other, or just⦠excuse my french, plain bugginā ugly, is so upsetting. I wouldnāt mind coughing up the money for the battle pass if I could just, say, unlock new colors to use on my own armor palette.
If I could grind for a gold metallic and a deep violet color to use on my armor? Iād do it in a heartbeat. The gameplay itself is so fun that I donāt think Iād mind working towards a color or five I had my eye on, and it would feel more rewarding to be able to āearnā a color that I can use to customize how I want instead of ⦠well.
Recent example: unlocked the Stone Green coating for the Mk VII and was super excited because the green looked really nice, and I liked it better than the anniversary green and the plain green you start with. I put it on. ⦠the helmet is white and black with no green on it. It looks goofy as hell while the rest of the armor looks good in that green with white accents. So my exitement about it immediately tanked. If Iād been able to like, rearrange where the white went, say to the accents or stripes on the armor? that wouldāve been awesome, itās such a good color! But the plain white helmet just looks terrible with the rest of the green armor.
I absolutely agree the coatings should have been like different stripe/shape configurations and armor textures rust/shiny/dirty/etc as well. If the point is player expression⦠why have us pick from a pitiful selection of lackluster palettes? Why lock the palettes to a single armor core?
I really donāt think coatings should be armor-core-locked either. Thatās bad form to me and makes them look exceptionally money-hungry. I was so excited to finish up the weeklies and get the nice looking Willow Tea coating for my armor⦠and then realised it was only for the Mark VII core and I canāt put it on the event armor I unlocked
I really, really hate getting excited about something and then learning itās severely limited, actually.

I feel like that may change at some point. Heck, Destiny is reusing some of their shaders and just renaming them because they have a limited pallet. Currently if you want to look like Chief from H3 or H2 with the Mark V B you would need Sage. Which the sage in this game is not Sage to me. Sage to me is what Junās coating is like how it was in Halo Reach. Plus some of Noble Teams armor doesnāt even have all their correct colors and patterns on the armor. Hoping the choice to make your own colors comes back at some point.

We told them āNoā to coatings and they said āDurr, you want NO colors customization? Done!ā
I agree, coatings should be just that; COATINGS! I donāt want Willow Tea with have a flower petal texture, I just wanted the color and worn, muddy look. Give me Cadet Grey on MK VI [B] for the Yaroi armor core. Give me the shiny metal from HCS for my Cars.
Sigh, coatings need work. Please God, let them fix it soon.

I legit believe 343/MSoft to be some of the most incompetent goons on the planet. All they had to do to make a good customization system for colors was take a bunch of patterns, sell them as coatings, and let the players customize the colors of that pattern. They can also sell different color pallets ala Warframe if they want to have more financial gain and give some player expression.
All they had to do with the shop/BP was copy Warzone. Give the people free currency and have it be tied to ingame performance, add challenges on top for extra boosts. Give people 20 dollars worth of stuff in the bundles. An armor set, a couple of weapon skins, some neat tracer/kill effects too.
Instead we get the absolute bare minimum approach, with systems no one wanted, a gutted matchmaking system, and ripoffs everywhere.

Yeah, I agree. I think Iām probably not the only one unwilling to buy coatings as they arenāt colors I like. I would pay a reasonable amount to apply my favorite colors with a new pattern. They should have expanded on the previous customization, and charged for the new features. They could have made money and made people happy.
