Armor Coating Explanation is Odd

Everything they showed in the update today looked cool including the armor coatings, but they still didn’t explain why armor coatings do not allow for basic colors.

“The coating system allows us to define color, wear and tear, patterns, and materials on a region-by-region basis on the Spartan or anything in the game be it armor, weapons, vehicles, or even environment elements like fuel barrels. To get to our design vision we needed to make an exceedingly difficult decision to move away from a system that was in the game from early days – primary and secondary color. This decision was not made lightly, but it has laid the foundation for greater detail and variation when it comes to color customization.”
“In addition to getting better variation, we can also create coatings much faster than we could create weapon skins in Halo 5, which will allow for even better variation over time. Additionally, with coatings now being their own customization option, we can also use them as rewards for player accomplishments or even create bespoke ones for certain occasions. Lastly, coatings use smaller digital footprint and let us add new ones to the game without massive patches or taking up tons of disk space, which was a learning from Halo 5.”

Everything stated here means that primary and secondary colors are not only possible in this game, but take up less space in the files than before, and yet we can’t have it. The only explanation is the presence of custom colors is projected to result in less skin sales.
Why else would the presence of both systems be a problem? Why can’t we have 20 basic coatings that are just the usual primary colors?
Modern Warfare offers all the customization past games did in addition to premium gun skins. Why can’t Halo?

This isn’t even remotely a deal breaker for me. I just find it really bizarre how they danced around this while being transparent about every other issue.

I agree, not to micromanage, but I think all Coating critique is to be addressed on this specific thread: https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/forums/29568daf8cd14083bd1b70a810bf3581/topics/we-want-more-info-on-armor-coating/2f93be94-b416-4ee3-88b7-e963a7618194/posts?page=36#post712

Even stranger, if Team Battles are going to be handled the way they always have been, that means customizing at least one color is algorithmically possible. Not to mention how games in the past, Doom 2016’s multiplayer comes to mind, have customizable colors on advanced material systems.

Their explanation for coatings was some of the funniest displays of mental gymnastics I’ve seen in years. They’re actually trying to say it was impossible to create high quality textures filled with detail while retaining the option for player color choice or material finishes, where many other games have been doing it for years, and are still doing it.

The way they brought up the fact that the multiplayer being free to play “changed things” seemed like their way of saying “yeah sorry guys Microsoft made us monetize customization like this cause Infinite’s gonna be a long-haul live service game don’t hate us :(”

Seems like every time I post here I’m doing it wrong, lol.

If we just got primary colors like we had in CE I would be happy.

I think the coatings sound great tbh. Overall I am very happy after reading what they said.

Sorry OP, it’s not that you did anything wrong, we just have a megathread dedicated to feedback on armor coatings. You can see it here.
