Armor Coating/Custom Color Compromise

So I know that not everyone has received the Armor Coating concept well, and many miss the ability to select our own colors from a selection of options.
343 is very unlikely to just drop the Armor Coating system, as they have put a lot of work into it, and it’s tied to a lot of promotions. So I’ve come up with a compromise that gives us the most effective customization, while still maintaining their idea of Armor Coatings.

Keep the Armor Coatings in place, and offer them as unlocks and rewards and all that. But allow us to use them as templates where we can alter the Colors from a selection like we used to. So an example would be the Scorpion Punch armor, which is black/steel with a red arm. We’d be able to apply that Armor Coating to set the pattern design on our spartan, and then individually select the colors, so we could be say White with a Teal arm, or Blue with a Silver arm. Etc.

I don’t know, I think we’d see a ton more unique and happy spartans, and both sides win. Infinite options.

Agreed. At present, and even with future seasons, the amount of variety we’ll see in player colors is laughably small. For a game focused on “player expression” and individuality, everyone is going to look exactly the damn same.

I really didn’t have much of a problem with the armor coatings during the flights, but being able to assign coatings and colors to armor pieces individually would be fantastic.

Absolutely. This would be much better than the current armor coating system. As cool as it is to be able to have different textures and patterns on your spartan’s armor, the fact that we don’t get to choose the colors is an absolute travesty. It’s the same problem Destiny has. Sure, there are lots of cool and funky materials and patterns, but none of them feel quite right for you color wise, and everyone kind of looks same-y.

I agree. Camo and patterns should be coatings and we should be able to choose the colours. Heck, I’m pissed there’s no standard pink. At least give us more if not all the plain colours.

They literally just need to let us choose the individual armor piece colors, and make the armor coatings something you can’t do with that system. If you could make an armor coating with just that system, it isn’t worth paying for. (or playing for, of course) If these are really trying to showcase some artwork, showing off the craft of the artists there at 343, they all need to be complex enough that you can’t just pick your own body part color and replicate it (I’m looking at you Scorpion Punch). There are plenty that aren’t like that. The Gundam coating is a great example. Excellent color coating! If they all were so complex, even utilizing things like scorch marks, gradients, and fractures, things like that, then we would have plenty of room for a system where we could pick our own colors for free, green arm, purple leg, etc, and then work for these more complex color schemes, or buy them. Then, I feel they’d be well worth it

PS: Ditch Scorpion Punch? No, just make it more complex, add red trim somewhere, make it a color gradient from red to black, idk. But no need to throw it out

Unfortunately that’s not how color pallettes works. They use this system to color every object in the game, not just our characters, guns, and weapons. And unfortunately that means each coating is restricted to a single pallette. At best it might be possible to shift those colors around (like you press Y while selecting your coating and it rotates the colors allowing you to tweak which parts of the armor or guns are “painted” with each color. Like doing a paint by numbers but always using 1 on 2, 2 on 3 and so on). But each coating is definitely locked to using the colors contained inside of it’s pallette.

Using the Scorpion Punch example, you’d be able to change which 2 parts are painted red, but you’re still stuck with 2 red sections, and the rest being steel.

This isn’t a compromise. This is exactly what 343 should have done in the 1st place. It’s a natural progression from Halo 5. H5 technically had armor coatings in that the game had variants of armor with different paint jobs. These patterns were very simple and almost always white, but they add variety nonetheless. The difference with Infinites coatings is that they have more variety in color and design, and they aren’t tied to armor pieces.

In an ideal world, 343 would let us choose our armor/attachments, color (primary, secondary), pattern (color layout), and finish (Shiny/fresh, rusted, dirt, grime, erosion, etc). Instead are colors and patterns are locked to whatever 343 thinks looks good instead of giving players the tools to make their own designs. They talk about “player expression” by I promise you everyone will be run Scorpion Punch and look exactly the same.

343’s armor coating system is actually very cool and a hands down good feature, but they yoiked it up with monetization. But I guess that’s become a bit of a trend for them…

I don’t dislike the idea. I think it makes the most sense. However I feel like it is unlikely. I feel like they may want those specific coatings to standout on their own rather than “Scorpion Punch but in blue and white”. Again, I don’t agree with that, I think OP’s idea is solid but I’m just unsure if it is attainable.

I think them giving us the base colors was their attempt to not take away color options. If you want to be purple, you can still, but they want their coatings to stand alone. I think if they want to find a happy middle ground, they give us a “blank” base coating and allow for whatever color combos we want on that but even I feel like that is unlikely.

I posted this Idea a while ago, with photoshopped visualization of how this would look.

Something like this makes sense, although I don’t know if it will fly. Being restricted to coatings is really sad. I can’t believe 343 even made the claim that this will help people personalize their spartan even more… by taking away the ability to make them whatever color you want and restricting them to a limited set.

I think the coatings are another sad attempt to try to monetize EVERY single part that they can. “You want cool colors? Battle pass!”

Yes good idea.

Even if a few players are wearing the same “coating” they can still look different and this foster player expression wich is a goal for 343i.

But i don’t think 343i will implement your idea, but i really like it.

At least 343i should give us the option to choose from a certain color part, i take your “scorpion punch armor” example: Black/steel and the arm red. That we can shoose different black and grey tones-of-color for the black part and different red tones-of-color (like orange, wine red etc.) for the red arm part. But yeah, i can’t imagine they will implement some variaton like that, but i hope for that.
